Batteries fail due to sulphite build-up on the lead plates. The only way to get the sulphite to release from the plates is to boil it off the plates by charging at between 17 and 19 VDC. The over voltage condition will cause the sulphite to release from the plates and is released as nitrogen gas, hence the need for good ventilation.
When I had a deep cycle lead acid battery in a solar home power system I used this process once a month as a part of my battery maintenance plan. Please note that it is the over-voltage, not over amperage condition that makes this process viable.

OMG!!! Using food grade acid like Citric Acid is better because you're not using industrial solvents. It'd probably take longer to dissolve the amphetamines but your body with thank you.

Pop the top of the battery
Pour BOTTLED water in the lowest resevoirs.
You will have at least a few more days of driving until you can get a new battery.
