Matthew later left a frantic voice message at his mother’s home telling her he and his new wife were “very badly burned.” Wait..."80% over his whole body, and his hands badly burned"...still was able to use his smart phone?! OR...was this after he got the Morphine on board at the hospital, THEN called his Mom? Most likely. |

It's not like these giant cruise firms are ran by babbling idiots. Why do you think only about 20 people out of 3000+ went on the island? Should be illegal Would Royal Caribbean drop off tourists in the middle of a Civil War like in Syria? That should be illegal Your the reason freedom is dead. Just so you know. Freedom for Corporations to get away with murder They didn’t make them go in that island. There were warnings they shouldn’t go hence most people staying on the ship. |

Excerpt from article Richmond, Va., newlyweds Matthew and Lauren Urey were on a day trip to White Island from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation when the volcano went off, the New Zealand Herald reported. Yeah, what is your point? Royal Caribbean cruise ship Ovation might be liable for Punitive damages I would assume that anybody taking a cruise to visit an active volcano would have been informed of the risks and signed waivers. Any geologist I know would have accepted the risk and taken the tour. |

Should be illegal Would Royal Caribbean drop off tourists in the middle of a Civil War like in Syria? That should be illegal It's not illegal to visit Syria. I have an American facebook friend who went on a tour there in October. On the other hand... Malaysian Airlines flew passenger jet MH17 directly over the most critical active battlefield in a war zone. That was a clear violation of the Chicago Treaty on Air Safety. Was it pilot error or the Kiyiv Air traffic control that should be held responsible? The Air Traffic control records have been destroyed, but the pilots should have known that there was no air traffic control in that area. The Donetsk air traffic control tower responsible for that area had been blown up. That was their first clue. The civil war in Syrian only affects the north of the country at this point. It's hard to get a visa, but their tourist industry is recovering. |

When people leave the cruise ship for day excursions, the ship doesn't have control over where they go. Now if the cruise set this up as part of the package price, then yes, but I doubt that is what happened. |

That should be illegal The cruise line didn't drop them off on the dang volcanic island for petes sake! They docked at port on a safe island. They didn't force anyone to leave the ship. People leave to explore on their own. That's what cruise ships do. Float around, dock at ports. You can stay and wait for the ship to leave port or go somewhere and make sure you are back in time! gee |

Any geologist I know would have accepted the risk and taken the tour. I think the government of New Zealand will take responsibility this, for allowing access, and the official information about level of volcanic activity was very wrong. GeoNet, which monitors geological hazards in New Zealand, placed the volcano alert level at a three out of a five-point scale during the eruption; it remained at that level Tuesday. A week before the incident and leading up to the eruption, the alert level was at a two. [link to www.washingtonpost.com (secure)] |
