Random American High School in 1989: Such vitality, happiness, vigor...What happened to us? | |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78425924 I was in middle school in California at that time. I began high school the next year. I can tell you based on first-hand experience that you're mostly wrong. People acted different in front of video cameras for sure, but the joyful atmosphere you see in the video captured the essence of how things were. The video embedded in the original post is a typical example from that time period. That's the way it was. Huh. I was a little kid. By the time I got to high school, things were much drearier I guess. I remember you having an Australian flag. This thread is mostly about upper middle class American life in the 1980s which I was lucky enough to experience. The dreary part was happening too. Like this. [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Yea I am American living in Australia. I experienced that life but I was just young. The 80’s seemed magical, but I just figured it seemed that way because I was a kid. The 1990s seemed magical when I was a little child. It seems like after 2001 a dark cloud enveloped everything and never left. |

I'm not going to watch an entire video of somebody elses high school. But, I was a little surprised to see that those kids were dressed and acted exactly the way we were in my high school, and my school was in a different state. Quoting: ThirstyMarlin I'll tell you how it was, and then you'll know what went wrong. First of all, we did not have cell phones, so we had to use the land line in our parents home. Oh shit, I'm not going to write a lengthy memory lane biography, let's just say it kicked ass! We could say anything, anything we wanted to say. Fuck it, I could yell J-w boy at the top of my lungs, and I might piss somebody off, but that was on me. The music of the 80's was great. We had Ronald Reagan as our President. We had cars we could afford. We smoked pot, drank beer, and just had fun. Nobody really had a care. We knew we were heading to college for even more fun! Class of '88 were AMATURES compared to the Class of '83. We used to hang little fuckers like you from your pants belt loops at the top of the cafeteria doors and laugh while you cried.. in '83 there was no fear of herps or aidz; our chicks PUT OUT or got the fk out of our cars! We had rock and roll hair. You had flock of seagulls hair.. We smoked bongs. You smoked cloves.. Whatever ..... We had the Funky Cold Medina, and The Love Shack. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75835501 Do you believe in the theory that the number of souls ran out, and the world is full of "organic portals" (soulless humans) now? Not sure, but it sure would explain a lot... I believe it somewhat. Not that the number of souls cannot be increased (but why?), but that many souls have finished their lessons on earth, and are no longer reincarnating. Leaving souless portals walking around. Soulless portals There's never a dull moment here on planet earth, unless GLP ceased to exist... Oh, and Biden can't dress himself.... |

This was approximately the peak of human civilization. We'll never return to being like this. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78425644 Was it just the Internet destroying human relationships or more than that? [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Well, I had autism back then, so I dont miss it I was the quiet one, always staring into my book Now everyone is just like me, quiet, staring down into their phone Really weird to see. Its like the world flipped on its head I never even see guys looking at pretty girls anymore as they walk by. They prefer their phone |

From the time they are very small the schools are very controlling and students don't have anywhere near the sort of freedom they would need to be happy and carefree like you used to see. Quoting: Hawktopus at age 11 12 13. i had from sun up to sun down to run around in the deep woods and all over the contryside, all by myself. i would pick a few friends up among the way. play wiffle ball or football or kick ball in the morning. take a break at some random kids house. run back outside and ride bikes for hours. take a hike in the woods for another few hours. go swimming in the afternoon. all this with little adventures during the day and night , with whoever happened to be my same age and around at the same time. all day everyday. for the entire summer. without one adult bothering us. ever. from age 11- 18. just got to school. pay attention do your best. treat people like the church teaches. obey god. respect your elders. be home by dArk |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72609499 high school was horrible. the kids were horrible to each other. although they pretended to be friends. it was very fake and hierarchy based off how much money/connections you had and how populate u were. everybody got shit on. even the popular kids. but there was an element of innocence. more so the. what’s in the kids now The boundaries of a good culture are always tested and stretched, particularly by younger people. That's been true since the time of Socrates. What has happened over the past 30 years is that boundaries are now so broken, modern culture is taking a high dive over the cliff. Ruthless, violent, misery-inducing ultra-liberal Mao Tse-tung in 1960's China enlisted millions of mainly younger people to rip down what few Chinese traditions and norms still existed in already-Communist (and suffering) China. His program was known as the Cultural Revolution. Millions of people saw their possessions, livelihoods and even lives wiped out. Reeducation camps were set up all over China. Cell phones, personal computers and Facebook didn't exist back then. But berserk liberalism/leftism did. In 2020, we're now dealing with a China that has been Wuhan-virus-ized and a US-based leftism that is attempting a Yankee/Uncle Sam/Lady Liberty version of Mao's Cultural Revolution. . |

Hate to say but you guys all looked the same over the country because you were watching so much mtv. You mimicked everything you saw - everything got homogenized. You were fed godless cool people 24/7 and they all were egotistical, selfish, narcist, taught to be rowdy party animals who had crazy sex and abortions with no guilt -- hedonists. You all are 50 now - are your shrinks allowing you to cry and morn the loss of how superficial you were all pushed into being? Happy and real ?? maybe near the mid to late 70s still around then. |
