I know a bit about military space missions since I was an aerospace engineer.

I would bet that USAF already HAS infrared cameras aimed outward to detect “dark” enemy sats.

For example, a nuke weapon stationed in high Earth orbit would not be detectable by early warning sats. It would make a burn at apogee and then come almost straight in at almost 10 km/sec.

Perfect for a surprise attack.

How to see them? IR, of course.

The civvie sat would see stuff as well.

Perhaps we have some spare milsats that are “dark” as well that DoD does not want anyone to see.

Note that many near Earth asteroids are burned out comet nuclei with an albedo darker than coal. Hard to detect until it is too late.
