Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25532771 One missile costing 100 thousand dollars can shot a plan/tank that costs millions of dollars. Regarding the Iranian technology, the latset hit was the drone that flew all over the Israeli defences without being discovered. The drone flew past the unifil control in southern Lebanon, past the Nato based ships outside the Lebanese cost, past the Israeli radar defences all along the cost of Israel including the iron domes and flew above the X-band radar of the US in the Negev desert without being detected. If this technology is not enough of a proof then wait for the shit to hit the fan in a war and then its too late. Stop bragging and get real. It seems to take a Swede to understand basic things like this. :-) |

Most of the time the outcome favors the larger ships. Study your history folks. During the war of 1812 the US had hundreds of gun boats meant to defend the harbors from naval attack. They didn't work. In both world wars torpedo boats were used with generally poor results. Why? Because they ended up not getting to fight the slow heavy battleships in a one on one fight. Destroyers met them instead, and destroyers were almost as fast and agile and much more heavily armed. Smoke screens were used. Torpedo boats had limited range and could not operate in heavy seas. A small boat is a one hit wonder that cannot defend against the plethora of weapons that can be brought to bear upon it. |

Erectus User ID: 25527599 United States 10/14/2012 12:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'd also like to point out that Israel obviously knew about the drone because they shot it down. So it clearly didn't escape detection. Additionally, being able to sneak something past lines of defense during peace time is nothing like trying to do it during war. A single small blip on a radar (particularly an intermittent one as might be seen from a stealth aircraft, and which looks like a bird on radar) doesn't often result in the same response during peace time as it does during a hot war. There aren't hundreds of ground spotters on station 24 hours a day. There aren't as many radar systems operating. A good example would be the chinese sub that infiltrated its way inside the AO of a US carrier group. It likely did this by just getting in front of the carrier group and sitting. During war carrier groups make many angles to prevent such things. The best sonars are not often used during peace time because they drive whales mad. Sona boueys are not dropped all over the place in peace time except during training. The odds of that same sub doing the same thing during war time are vastly diminished. The notion of Iran putting hundreds of speed boats to sea, sailing them 300+ miles out and wiping out a carrier group is just absurd. It is not absurd to think that Iran might get lucky and get a boat past defenses once or twice and actually launch a missile or two. Then those missiles might get past air defenses and hit a target. If Iran does pull that off once or twice it won't change anything. A couple of ships might have to be towed in for repair. I don't recall the damaging or sinking of a US ship ever resulting in the US giving up. Not even when carriers have been sank. |

Informed User ID: 25548283 Sweden 10/14/2012 12:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | do you even realise what equipment our navies have, and the training they go through? do you REALLY believe speedboats, no matter how many of them they have, hold ANY fear for them? honestly guys, get out more. Let us try to explain: The video is propaganda and Iran doesn't have 10 000+ speeds boats, but they have thousands. Of cause a minority of them are missile boats, but they are still in the hundreds. The mistake of western militaries is the obsession of weapon platforms. The bigger and more sophisticated they are is important. UK shows this in their great mistake called the Type 45 destroyers. Even if they have an impressive amount of weapons and counter systems it’s still just ONE target. Platforms always come second to the weapons. It’s no more than what the name says - a platform. It’s much better to fire 100 missiles from 100 small cheep platforms then from a few very expensive ones. Iran shows understanding in this in every field; even then it comes to their midget subs Ghadir, which have 21” torpedo tubes just like the biggest submarines. They can deliver the same blow, are harder to detect, much cheaper to build and can therefore be built in large numbers. They’re in the top 10 list of nasty surprises for their enemies to be. How about better radars and tracing systems some may argue. It doesn’t really matter in an asymmetric warfare were the enemies quantity is big enough. Soviet painfully taught the quality superior Germany this during WWII. Strange the west didn’t learn from it. Then hundreds of small threats approx, you can’t defend against them all. Not even with the most advanced systems. Even if you theoretically can track them you can’t fire at them simultaneously. Not to talk about decision-making and other human factors. Whish one has missiles, mines, divers or maybe even nothing on board? You want know before the missile is fired and then it’s far too late, especially in the narrow waters of the Hormuz straight. We can say for sure that the losses of US and the other aggressors will be for them surprisingly high. Huge problem with your theory: Iran's latest “carrier killer” missile has a 185-mile range. Tomahawks and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets are launched from 400 to 1,000 miles offshore. You do the math logistically and you will see how they will fail. I guess we will wait for these 10,000 speedboats to travel 500+ miles towards us before we do anything right? Have you even read what we wrote? "... narrow waters of the Hormuz straight." Everything in there and most parts of the Persin Gulf is more or less sitting ducks. Did you get it now? |

I have to deal with them daily and have often fantasized about a shooting spree to rid my beloved country of some of them, especially when some fat ass takes up the whole damn isle in the grocery store and waddles their sweaty fat ass along so damn slow that it takes me ten minutes just to get down the cooking grease isle. The fact remains though that the US military acts very prudently. It's doctrine has not yet proven unsound. It will fight at the time and place of it's choosing under only favorable conditions....because it can. The idea that US forces will be defeated because of simple idiocy is wishful thinking.
