Re: Chinese briefcases were opened today - what will you be told?
The whole deal with seperate canisters and briefings plays right in to this scenario.

I cant help but think that this entire event was known in advance, and ordered hush hush, even in regard to potentially saving lives. Seems like payment in blood was necessary Duncan.

I even reconsider my (and many other Aussies) cringing, listening to our PM, Julia Gillard's speech at the US congress.

The tears may not have been about the moon landing at all, but a passionate plee to the Americans to try to stop this. "American's can do anything".

** please DONT delete this one.
 Quoting: BadHairDay

I also believe that naturally occurring 'stress-buildups' along tectonic plates is detectable by tptb, although one can only guess at what timescale of advance warning they have.
I am also sure that this information is withheld from the civilian/public sector, but used to enhance the agendas and goals of various power factions - ie they take advantage of the disaster on all levels.

I am sure that debate will grow over whether this was 'manufactured', 'let happen', or 'natural' - for some time. However, as you say, in context of the Bezerk events, it does sometimes feel as though this event was 'expected'. Time will tell.

As for Gillard's speech - yes, I wondered if she was addressing other issues with her "Americans can do anything bit". Her emphasis seemed more aimed below the surface words.

However, the speechwriter for that very speech has been given a hard time today, because some allege that lots of it is similar to a speech given by Bono some time ago. Where does that leave us? Anyway, Crikey.com.au have some stuff about it on their site somewhere.

Right on, Duncan..

Listening to her words as soon as she had heard about the Japanese EQ, and then on ABC-AM this morning, about WikiLeaks, it seems to me that in some cases she is NOT being told, deliberately kept out of the loop, or that she DOES know and is NOT allowed to say anything.

Actually, the 'feeling' I got this morning, was, she is trying to give out warnings, but has been told to keep the lid on it.

I feel if she carries on like this, we may suddenly have a new PM (will she swim at Bell's beach? - I hope not)

<snip>

Players not prayers.

USA: The White House sent in a team to consult with the US-friendly  Naoto  Kan  government. Instead of dispatching in experts  from the Department of Energy, Nuclear Safety Agency and Health Department, President Obamas sent representatives of USAID, which is cover for the CIA. The presence of these paranoiac bumblers only confirms suspicions of a top-level cover up. Why would the Agency be worried about the disaster? There are security considerations, such as regional "enemies" Pyongyang, Beijing and Moscow taking advantage of the crisis. To the contrary, China and Russia have both offered carte blanche civilian aid.
Second, to coordinate a pro-American public campaign synchronized with the US relief effort from the nuclear carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Many Japanese might actually be alarmed by Navy ships offshore, reminding them of the firebombing campaign in the big  war, and US helicopters rumbling overhead as if Sendai was Danang  Vietnam 1968. The whole "aid" exercise smacks of a con job aimed at keeping US military bases in Okinawa and surreptitiously at a Japanese Self-Defense Force firing range at the foot of Mount Fuji.
Third, to ensure the safekeeping of Misawa Air Force Base in quake-hit Aomori Prefecture. Misawa, the hub of US electronic warfare and high-tech espionage in East Asia with its fleet of P-3 Orions and an ECHELON eavesdropping antennae.

PRC: In contrast to Washington's ulterior motives, China in  an unprecedented move  has sent in an emergency team into Japan. Unbeknownst to the world, China has world-leading expertise in extinguishing nuclear meltdowns and blocking radiation leaks at their uranium mines and military nuclear plants. This was discovered on a 2003 visit to a geological research center in the uranium-rich Altai mountain region of Xinjiang, where a scientist disclosed "off the record" China's development of mineral blends that block radiation "much more than 90 percent, nearly totally". When asked why the institute doesn't commercialize their formulas, he responded: "We've never thought about that." That's too bad because if one of China's exports was ever needed, it's their radiation blanket. [emphasis added]

Russia: Moscow too, is offering unconditional aid, despite ongoing territorial conflict with Japan over four northern islands. The Russian Air Force, situated on bases in Kamchatka and the Kurile could play a key role in cloud-seeding to prevent radioactive particles from drifting over to the United States. Americans should learn how to be team players, especially now that its their own children whose lives are at stake in the event of a total meltdown in Fukushima.

Canada: Meteorology is becoming evermore interesting, despite the "what me worry" attitudes of the global-warming skeptics. A freak of nature called El Nino Variable, if it occurs later this spring, could push the Pacific jet stream northward, meaning western Canada and more US states could find themselves along a winding stream of radiation fallout from Japan.

China flexes its military muscles off Libyan coast

Recently, China moved a 4,000-ton frigate, fully armed with air-defense missiles, to the Libyan coast.  This was the first time in history that a Chinese warship has been deployed in a mission as far away as the Mediterranean Sea, and perhaps the first time the Chinese have intervened in another country to launch a major humanitarian rescue mission.

Coming in very late to this thread, having read much of the available information.

Is there speculation as to the ghost cities built in China that these could be for "visitors"? Given that there are something like 60 million vacant residences, it seems like it is more than just housing displaced Japanese.

The sheer number seems quite chilling.

I just spotted this article in New Scientist:

[link to www.newscientist.com]

It may be evidence for the existence of previously unknown organisms so different from the standard divisions of biological life (bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes) that constitute a whole new branch.

"Jonathan Eisen at the University of California, Davis, Genome Center has identified gene sequences hidden within these samples that are so unusual they seem to have come from organisms that are only distantly related to cellular life as we know it. So distantly related, in fact, that they may belong to an organism that sits in an entirely new domain."

[...] When Eisen and Venter used the technique on samples collected from the Global Ocean Sampling Expedition, they found that some sequences belonging to two superfamilies of genes – recA and rpoB – were unlike any seen before.

"The question is, what are they from?" says Eisen. Because the team has no idea what organism the genes belong to, the question remains unanswered. There are two possibilities, he says. "They could represent an unusual virus, which is interesting enough. More interestingly still, they could represent a totally new branch in the tree of life."

Does this sound like a slow release of new info into the MSM?

Re: Chinese briefcases were opened today - what will you be told?
Thanks Acolyte, I keep a weather eye out for references to the "organism" or things connected with it. Considering our general ignorance of the deepest parts of the ocean, I'd be surprised if something wasn't lurking way down there that was perfectly at home in a high-pressure dark environment.

The "bloop" sound and speculation about the "deep hot biosphere" may be part of it too.

The wording of the New Scientist article is a bit puzzling. Calling the new discovery part of the "dark matter" of biology implies that we don't know around 99% of the life on this Earth. Do they really think the largest branch of the "tree of life" is almost unknown to us? And where has it been hiding all this time?

Time frames would be interesting to know...samples from oceans, when, and which oceans..this report is from March 20, 2011..a full year after the disaster in the GOM..I believe Venter was also responsible for synthia..a synthetic oil eating bacteria that was added to the GOM..and now we have a new life form perhaps...huh..just rambling..just rambling..

Thanks for posting the Snyder website, AC 1310127.

If that icy meteorite originated on Enceladus, then I think he has found something amazing. And how typical of the scientific establishment to stonewall him.

I think he should take his findings to researchers in China and elsewhere who may prove more open-minded.

I like the idea that we're reaching a point where the "flat Earth" of terrestrial biology is going to open up into universal biology. Not terrestrial or extraterrestrial but universal.

" 'Destabilising' Trident warhead already being tested in US

Another sign that the wheels are turning on Trident replacement long before the 2016 'main gate' decision"

Found a "JulianB*****'s GlobalSecurityBlog" in a wellknown British newspaper relating to the abbreviations found in the post above.

WETL = Weapons Evaluation Test Laboratory the article explains.

And here on ...
fas.org/blog/ssp/2011/04/britishw76-1.php/comment-page-1

"British Submarines to Receive Upgraded US Nuclear Warhead"

As I understand it the Trident is a see-launched ballistic missile system, being launched from a submarine.
And it goes into "service" (=ready to cause devastation) NOW(?), not in 2016 (oh sure, all atomic powers participate in the overkill).

Well, the fas.org article is dated as of Apr 01 2011 - doesn't feel like an April Fool's joke to me - but the picture looks strange to me - a simple way to fill-in fresh tritium??

Anyway, it's stomach-churning for me as always when seeing what devastation all those war machinery intends to cause, including triggering "natural" disasters or straight killing destruction of a magnitude we cannot imagine.
And how much money goes into all destructive machinery - people in the UK were protesting recently due to public budget cuts.

<9:0>[Acolyte]: hi E. & mM
<9:0>[Acolyte]: and Z. lol
<9:1>[M.]: hey aco, re the organism and incoming stuff from space ...
<9:1>[M.]: were they gamma ray bursts per chance?
<9:2>[Acolyte]: are you talking about the comunication rays?
<9:2>[M.]: yes
<9:2>[Acolyte]: then they not gamma
<9:2>[M.]: ok
<9:3>[Acolyte]: the other rays are
<9:3>[M.]: what were they?
<9:3>[Acolyte]: but the comm rays are difrent
<9:3>[Acolyte]: you gonna hate me
<9:4>[Acolyte]: i cant tell you waht the comm rays are
<9:4>[M.]: lol, that's ok, i didnt think you would be allowed to
<9:4>[M.]: but if there were GRBs, i think my brain would explode
<9:5>[M.]: so im glad you said they werent
<9:5>[Acolyte]: im playing dodgem with you when you start asking questions :)
<9:5>[M.]: lol Aco, im good where the boundaries are, just dont tell me stuff that you shouldnt
<9:5>[M.]: and dont feel bad when you cant tell stuff either
<9:6>[M.]: gamma ray bursts are v interesting
<9:6>[Acolyte]: yeah i know but me having to frequently say "i cant" sounds like a cliche or bad movie line
<9:6>[M.]: am exploring their connection with earthquakes
<9:6>[Acolyte]: ok
<9:6>[M.]: long bursts seem to be linked to two big quakes
<9:6>[M.]: lots of mystery about where grb's come from
<9:7>[M.]: but it is sort of accepted now, that they come from outside the milky way galaxy
<9:7>[E.]: hmmmmm. Very interesting. Possibly gravitrons then. neat
<9:7>[M.]: that's a v long way away, and we pick em up every day now
<9:7>[M.]: we've only been measuring them for a few years
<9:8>[Acolyte]: grb are reflections some say, but im not telling who is saying it
<9:8>[M.]: so hard to corroborate them to much
<9:8>[M.]: oooohh Aco - that's a juicy morsel, thank you
<9:8>[Acolyte]: lol
<9:9>[M.]: I’ve yet to check what the electric universe scientists think about grb's
<9:9>[M.]: their explanation will probably be most logical
<9:10>[Acolyte]: lol M. you quit the EQ fundi
<9:10>[Acolyte]: quite
<9:10>[M.]: only because the number of quakes on the pacific rim is getting scary Aco
<9:10>[Acolyte]: yes, the event
<9:10>[M.]: both in size and quantity
<9:11>[Acolyte]: i dont think we would be far wrong to think that the japan event was maybe one of the 9 events
<9:11>[M.]: lets put it this way, another long GRB is going to be my best predictor for a big quake incoming a few days later
<9:11>[M.]: which event tho - natural or nuclear
<9:11>[M.]: or two events in one maybe?
<9:12>[Acolyte]: geological
<9:12>[Acolyte]: then there is the trinity events
<9:12>[M.]: the number of aftershock quakes in Japan, is over 455 now
<9:12>[M.]: all size 5.0M or greater
<9:13>[Acolyte]: EQ+Tsunami/close moon/man
<9:13>[M.]: japan has had more size 6.0M quakes in the last 3 weeks, than it has had in the last 7 years combined
<9:13>[Acolyte]: yes its incredible, ongoing event
<9:13>[M.]: still happening every few hours there
<9:14>[Acolyte]: japna region is being liquified
<9:14>[M.]: contrast with the indonesian tsunami quake, which was 9.3M
<9:14>[M.]: its aftershock quakes were gone within weeks, and only about 25% in number
<9:15>[M.]: yes Aco, i would not be surprised to see Japan sinking after these continuous big aftershocks
<9:15>[M.]: sort of 'jiggling' itself into the crust
<9:15>[Acolyte]: or the ground/japan is beiny soften up for something to emerge from it
<9:15>[E.]: ulp
<9:15>[Acolyte]: lol and im not thinking godzilla ok
<9:16>[M.]: hahah
<9:17>[E.]: there are soooo many godzilla jokes lately.
<9:17>[E.]: lol
<9:17>[Acolyte]: i think you can say japn is now one massive splashzone
<9:17>[E.]: oh, crap
<9:17>[Acolyte]: Japan = highway then runway
<9:17>[M.]: well, the org certainly has got lots of heat energy there after those reactors have melted down

<10:17>[E.]: and then activate dormant dna strands?
<10:18>[E.]: At this point, if the signal is sufficiently complex in it's encoding,

<10:18>[E.]: Just speculating, folks
<10:21>[E.]: so what about augie?
<10:22>[E.]: If there is a signal like described by Aco, Thhen who is the signal for?
<10:22>[E.]: is it intelligently driven, or is it a natural signal?
<10:23>[E.]: Is it for the oranism? If so, then we may be affected inadvertantly if the exposure to the signal is strong enough locally
<10:29>[E.]: Is it for us? If so, then the organism would be operating in a inadvertant way. However, We have been given information that it is operating
<10:30>[E.]: in a intelligent (or directed) fashion.
<10:31>[E.]: On top of that, The information we have recieved from our benefactors is that it is terraforming the earth.
<10:33>[E.]: That implies higher programming and intelligence to direct it's action.
<10:35>[E.]: In this scenario, I tend to favor that we (normal flora and fauna on Earth) are the inadvertant recipients.
There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

Dragons & DNA connections:

Thread: Something Just Went BEZERK in the Gulf of Mexico. The US Navy just sunk a French Submarine (Page 991)

The best why I can describe these objects using current dialect is to call
it a "Series of Triggering Steps of Spiritual and DNA Consciousness".
These objects are an outer manifestation of an inner force.
They are Higher Density Objects visible on the physical plane.
Its paranormal like a ghost or apparition.
IT'S THE LIFE ESSENCE/FORCE MADE VISIBLE TO THE PHYSICAL SENSES.

What is their purpose?

Each object will active/ignite a further string of our physical DNA
and.SoulMemory.
Each Ascender will correlate with a string of our DNA aswell as our DNA
memory bank.
These objects are the tools/instruments for Solar initiation.
There will be 12 to come and once they are in place, the final one, the 13th
(the Binder Object)(Dragon, "The Final Zodiac"), will appear.

It is my understanding that there are 12 pyramids/vortexes located on this
globe that will "house" these objects until The Binder appears. (Please don't ask me which and where these pyramids are for I really, currently, do
not know) Some are known by the public, most are not.

Something you might want to dwell on:
Why do you think China has the largest populace and the Oldest civilization still alive/survived?
Hints: Loyalty, Dedication, Extremely Competitive, Committed (they give their best), They Deliver. They Have a unified Imperial Instinct (Emperor Syndrome), they act in unison and not as individuals, and of course HONOR. (no patriotism needed, its bred in)
Answer: To put it simply they have it in their genes. And that "it" is from Draco. aka I TEE.

East Asia
The Chinese, Korean and Japanese speak throughout their history of Lóng (Yong in Korean, Ryu in Japanese) or dragons, conceived of in both physical and non-physical forms, but rarely depicted in humanoid form, though they may assume a non-reptilian human form.
The Japanese have tales of Kappa, a basically reptilian humanoid.
In China, Korea and Japan, underwater realms where the Dragon Kings and their descendants live are referred to, as well as the lineage of humans from a race of dragons. This lineage was often claimed by Asian Emperors, who were believed to be able to change from human to dragon form at will, much like the modern concept of shapeshifting reptilians. However, the dragon is seen as good rather than evil in Eastern tradition.

Symbology of the dragon:
Chinese: "The spirit of the way"' bringing eternal change. The early Chinese believed in four magical, spiritual and benevolent animals; the Phoenix, the Tortoise and the Unicorn and the Dragon, the most revered of all. It holds an enormous magical pearl (DNA symbol), which has the power to multiply whatever it touches.

Dragons, DNA and the I Ching
Just like Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs, Nü-Kua was a dragon that taught her people about art, irrigation and agriculture. She had a male partner, another half-dragon named Fu Xi, and he taught humans how to hunt, fish and create music. He also had a role in creating the eight trigrams which were the foundation of the I'Ching. [17]

Several modern books like the Tao of Chaos have demonstrated extraordinary similarities that link the I'Ching to modern knowledge of DNA structures. [18] Basically, DNA comprises of four code letters, A, T, C and G. These are combined into sets of three, known as codons. This means that there are 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 combinations available, and the I Ching also has 64 combinations.

An 8x8 magic square can be constructed by placing the numbers 1.64 in sequence, and then reversing the order of the green positions. The total of any line gives us 260, the number of days in the Tzolkin, the Mayan sacred calendar. Is it just a coincidence that the next Year of the Dragon is 2012?

2012 is the year of the Water Dragon

DNA is of course directly related to mutations, which we shall look into in a later chapter. Also, links have been made to the description of the 22-letter Hebrew language (as described in the Hebrew book of creation Sefer Yetzirah), and the 22 major arcane Tarot cards - each corresponding to the 22 amino acid and punctuation groups of DNA.

The Cadeuceus is a figure that consists of two entwined serpents encircling a wand or rod. It was carried by Hermes in Greek myths and Mercury in Roman mythology as the messenger of the gods. It was a symbol of authority and protected the herald who carried it.

The similarity of this symbol to the double helix of DNA strands is a common observation. By looking at Greek myths we can find links to cataclysms and re-creation...
Hermes appears to be the same character as Quetzalcoatl/Kulkulcan/Nahuatl of Mesoamerica. The both had serpent imagery (Quetzalcoatl was a feathered serpent, Hermes wore a winged hat and sandals and carried the Cadeuceus) and each provided similar services to their people (Quetzalcoatl cured ailments, introduced corn, science, calendars, created fire and gave instruction of music and dance). Another mythical cousin to these two is Buddha. Also a great teacher, he had a virgin mother named Maya.

Although this symbol is most famous for being carried by Hermes, we can trace it back to a much earlier civilisation.

On exhibit in the Louvre is a green libation vase, which was excavated from the ancient Mesopotamian city of Lagash. The inscription on it, from King Gudea of Lagash circa 2025 BC, is a dedication to Ningizzida. Also on the vase is an image of two entwined snakes on a rod. Some have dated the vase as far back as 4000 B.C. The rod is most likely to be Axis Mundi, the world tree, Yggdrasil, the tree of life. Ningizzida, a fertility god, was also known as 'Lord of the Tree of Life'. He was often depicted as a serpent with a human head, and later became a god of healing and magic. His companion was Tammuz/Dumuzi, who personified the creative powers of spring [19] (like the Greek Maia).

In the same era the cadeuceus was being used by the people of India to represent Kundalini - but that's another story.
Could ancient scriptures and symbols, ostensively brilliantly simple descriptions of DNA, have come from a dragon? Or were they just credited to a dragon in a myth, because dragons represent order from chaos, and symbolise terrible all-changing catastrophes?

The fifth Aztec age was initiated by the dragon Quetzalcoatl in 3,113 B.C. and is due to complete its cycle on Dec. 21, 2012. Is it just a coincidence that this happens to be the next Chinese year of the Dragon? Is this the date of the next pole shift?
A Theory
Here is a theory that combines all myths about dragons:
Between 5,000 and 12,000 years ago, an extraterrestrial force, with accompanying cosmic radiation, caused the Earth's poles to shift.
• The Norse, Greek, Aztec, Chippewa & Chinese all have flood legends which have dragons in an integral role
• The Fon and Norse legends involve the world tipping over, because of dragons
• The Norse and Babylonian flood legends involve the shifting of the stars - something that would appear to happen in a pole shift

This in turn caused a global cataclysm of floods, earthquakes, mud and volcanoes. All living things had their numbers drastically reduced. Life arose from mud. Those that survived had mutated DNA from cosmic radiation - (even today cosmic rays are the main cause of random DNA mutations). Many new species came about.

• The Fon, Norse, Babylonian, Aztec & Chinese all have creation legends involving dragons
• The Norse, Babylonian, Greek, Aztec & Chinese all have mutations appearing in their legends

Some, including dragons and unicorns, had genetic Achilles heels, which prevented them from surviving through until the modern era.

Dragons were the most monstrous of all the new species, and became the symbol of the cataclysm and the resulting mutations. After a few generations, two species of humans remained, the Neanderthals (giants) and the Nephilim (angels/gods). The Nephilim were the most changed, and they became associated with dragon symbolism. They had changed for the better, and they retained information from before the cataclysm. But they were few, and they were weak. The only way to survive was to mate with the Neanderthal giants. And to teach their offspring all they knew.

• Cecrops and Athena (Greece), Quetzalcoatl (Aztec) & Nü-Kua (China) were all dragons that introduced knowledge to their respective cultures

The ancient myths that relate to the cataclysm feature dragons and mutations, as a simplistic way of explaining what had happened. It is to their the credit of the inventors of these myths, that the underlying message has somehow managed to survive for millennia.

DNA symbols
There are two serpentine symbols associated with medicine today, the staff of Aesculapius and the Cadeuceus, although the staff of Aesculapius has the strongest mythological association to healing. Aesculapius was a Roman physician who was such a skilled healer that he became a god, and temples were dedicated to him. The symbol of his wooden staff with only one snake coiled around it was adopted by the American Medical Association early last century.

The Cadeuceus has a slightly [*] more ancient background and, more importantly, it reinforces our links between floods, DNA and serpents/dragons.

Black Hole May Have Ripped Star Apart Causing Unprecedented Explosion
ScienceDaily (Apr. 7, 2011) — NASA's Swift, Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory have teamed up to study one of the most puzzling cosmic blasts yet observed. More than a week later, high-energy radiation continues to brighten and fade from its location.
Astronomers say they have never seen anything this bright, long-lasting and variable before. Usually, gamma-ray bursts mark the destruction of a massive star, but flaring emission from these events never lasts more than a few hours.
Although research is ongoing, astronomers say that the unusual blast likely arose when a star wandered too close to its galaxy's central black hole. Intense tidal forces tore the star apart, and the infalling gas continues to stream toward the hole. According to this model, the spinning black hole formed an outflowing jet along its rotational axis. A powerful blast of X- and gamma rays is seen if this jet is pointed in our direction.

On March 28, Swift's Burst Alert Telescope discovered the source in the constellation Draco when it erupted with the first in a series of powerful X-ray blasts. The satellite determined a position for the explosion, now cataloged as gamma-ray burst (GRB) 110328A, and informed astronomers worldwide.
As dozens of telescopes turned to study the spot, astronomers quickly noticed that a small, distant galaxy appeared very near the Swift position. A deep image taken by Hubble on April 4 pinpoints the source of the explosion at the center of this galaxy, which lies 3.8 billion light-years away.
That same day, astronomers used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to make a four-hour-long exposure of the puzzling source. The image, which locates the object 10 times more precisely than Swift can, shows that it lies at the center of the galaxy Hubble imaged.
"We know of objects in our own galaxy that can produce repeated bursts, but they are thousands to millions of times less powerful than the bursts we are seeing now. This is truly extraordinary," said Andrew Fruchter at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
"We have been eagerly awaiting the Hubble observation," said Neil Gehrels, the lead scientist for Swift at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "The fact that the explosion occurred in the center of a galaxy tells us it is most likely associated with a massive black hole. This solves a key question about the mysterious event."
Most galaxies, including our own, contain central black holes with millions of times the sun's mass; those in the largest galaxies can be a thousand times larger. The disrupted star probably succumbed to a black hole less massive than the Milky Way's, which has a mass four million times that of our sun
Astronomers previously have detected stars disrupted by supermassive black holes, but none have shown the X-ray brightness and variability seen in GRB 110328A. The source has repeatedly flared. Since April 3, for example, it has brightened by more than five times.
Scientists think that the X-rays may be coming from matter moving near the speed of light in a particle jet that forms as the star's gas falls toward the black hole.
"The best explanation at the moment is that we happen to be looking down the barrel of this jet," said Andrew Levan at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, who led the Chandra observations. "When we look straight down these jets, a brightness boost lets us view details we might otherwise miss."
This brightness increase, which is called relativistic beaming, occurs when matter moving close to the speed of light is viewed nearly head on.
Astronomers plan additional Hubble observations to see if the galaxy's core changes brightness

Draco the Dragon
Draco is a circumpolar constellation visible all night from northern latitudes. The constellation winds around the little dipper. Its' stars are not very bright, containing only three stars above magnitude 3.0. At one time Draco was quite a bit larger when the ancient Mesopotamians gave the dragon large wings which wound around Ursa Major. The Greek philosopher Thales lopped off the wings in the sixth century BC.
Thuban and the Great Pyramid of Khufu
The Pharaoh Khufu ruled ancient Egypt around 2550 BC and was buried in the largest of the Giza pyramids when he died. During his time, Thuban was the pole star, (because of Earth's precession) around which all other stars revolved. Khufu's burial chamber was fashioned deep inside the Great Pyramid. Two skinny shafts bore outward from the chamber.
For decades, scholars thought they were airshafts. But in the 1960s, astronomers found that they have an astronomical purpose. It was found that one of the shafts pointed directly towards Thuban. The other was aimed at the belt of Orion, which symbolized Osirus.
The stars close to the pole never set. The Egyptians described these stars as "imperishable" or "undying." Khufu expected that when he died, he would join not only with the Sun, but with Thuban as well, maintaining order in the celestial realm, just as he had on Earth.
Mythology
During the time that Draco's star Thuban was the pole star, it would have appeared to ancient sky watchers that the Earth revolved around Draco. Dragons and other similar creatures often played a role in creation myths. In these stories the gods would often battle such creatures for control of the Earth. When defeated, the dragons were flung up into the skies.
Roman myth calls this dragon Ladon and he guarded the golden apples on a tree in a garden tended by the Hesperides, the daughters of Atlas. Hercules was sent to obtain the apples while under pledge to Eurystheus. He learned from Nereus that he could not pluck the apples himself, but must get help from Atlas. Hercules shot and killed Ladon with an arrow, making way for Atlas to enter and pluck the golden apples. The goddess Hera was greatly distressed by the death of Ladon and placed the dragon in the heavens.
A Greek legend tells the story of Draco as a horrible dragon that guarded a sacred spring and slew the soldiers of Cadmus (first king of Thebes) who had been sent to gather water. Cadmus then fought the dragon and won,. After the dragon died, Athena appeared and told Cadmus to sow the ground with the creature's teeth. The teeth immediately sprang up as a group of armed soldiers who helped Cadmus found Thebes.
A Babylonian creation story tells of Tiamat, who turned herself into a dragon but was later defeated and split into two parts. One part became the heavens and the other, the Earth.
A Chinese tale sees the stars as the dragon who eats the Sun or Moon (possible represented by the north star Polaris) in an eclipse. During a real eclipse, ancient Chinese would make as much noise as possible, banging on pots and pans to try and scare away the dragon which was eating the Sun or Moon.
A Norse creation myth tells of a dragon who gnaws at the roots of Ygdrasil, the tree that covers the world.
Because Thuban was the pole star 5000 years ago the ancient Egyptians keenly observed it. Some of Draco's stars were part of their constellation of Hippopotamus and some were of the Crocodile. They appear on the planisphere of Denderah and the walls of the Ramesseum at Thebes. The hieroglyph for the Hippopotamus was used for the heavens in general while the constellation is supposed to have been a symbol of Isis Rathor, Athor, or Athyr, the Egyptian Venus. Draco's stars were also said to represent the falcon headed god Horus.
Around 800 BC, the prehistoric Adena people who lived in the Ohio area of the United States created Serpent Mound which is believed to mirror the constellation Draco. This huge mound is nearly a quarter mile long.
The Persians have regarded Draco as a man-eating serpent called Azhdeha.
In early Hindu worship, Draco is given the form of an alligator known as Shi-shu-mara.
