Anonymous Coward User ID: 4108528 United States 11/07/2011 06:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | bit offtopic..or maybe not^^ Quoting: IwantToBelieve76 its new This radar image of asteroid 2005 YU55 was obtained on Nov. 7, 2011, at 11:45 a.m. PST (2:45 p.m. EST/1945 UTC), when the space rock was at 3.6 lunar distances, which is about 860,000 miles, or 1.38 million kilometers, from Earth. [link to www.nasa.gov] I don't like the looks of this. Thanks IWTB. It appears perfectly spherical. This of course means it has enough gravity to be round, unlike so many other asteroids out there. This also probably suggests a much denser object, which most asteroids are loosely packed dirt and ice. This is all very odd...... Well it is a NASA picture, so it probably looks way different that this anyway.... Can't they get it on the Trinityscope yet? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1679900 United States 11/07/2011 07:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is kind of a silly question.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1399029 but if we had some kind of foresight as to a HUGE flare.. would taking the battery out of our laptop potentially save it? I believe its not the battery that collects the energy in a geomagnetic storm but all the wires that will feed into your chips and fry your laptop. A geomagnetic storm is caused by a CME not a flare which won't do much if anything at all to your laptop. If you're really worried keep it unplugged during a G-storm and wrap it in aluminum foil. From my research this should be sufficient, not that anyone has ever had to actually do this before so I guess I can't say I'm absolutely sure. The foil seems a little overboard though, I think at that point there will be no electricity to recharge you laptop or to use anything else if a storm got THAT bad. Put it in something non-conductive before wrapping in foil. Something like a cardboard box. Then wrap the box in aluminum foil, making sure there are no seams open. Look up "Faraday Cage" online. Find instructions on how to build one. They can be done very cheaply. Of course if the CME is strong enough, it potentially has the power to knock out the electric grid and disable satellites...etc. So, even if we save our electronics in a Faraday cage, there may be no electricity to be able to run them and no satellite signals either. So... |

So... Actually, I watched a video posted on here a month or so ago where someone was explaining how there was no need for a non conductive material to be wrapped around your electronics first. He was showing how a cell phone can't get, or losses, a signal when wrapped completely in foil and the same with a normal radio with a long metal antenna. This he wrapped while it was receiving a music radio signal and, when he had it completely wrapped, the music was silenced even though the antenna was clearly touching the foil. Does this not mean that the foil was redirecting the signal or waves around the item and not into the metal antenna it was touching? Wouldn't the foil that was wrapped around the radio simply become an extension to the antenna if it was conducting the waves into the radio instead of around it and thus the radio would have continued to play? I'm really curious about this too as there seems to be many different views on this topic of "Faraday Cages" and I can't seem to get them strait. I guess I would suggest that anyone wanting to know should use a nonconductive material as well to be on the safe side. I really wonder if it is really necessary to go through the extra trouble though. Anyone have any considerations on the subject that could be helpful? |

MMMKKK? Most importantly; why in the hell are you trying to save a damn cell phone, or a computer? Looking at the latest SDO Magnetogram, I can see that AR 1339 has lost some of its structure. The whole left side of this sunspot group has reduced remarkably over the past two days(see images below). 1339 is still in a Beta-Gamma Delta configuration, and it's still capable of producing strong flares, but I think they will be less frequent. The chance of very large X class flares is reduced as well. Quoting: tomasgod1 Compare this image from the 4th.... [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] with this current image.... [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] As you can see the BGD structure is still there, but barely, and at this rate of deterioration may be lost completely within a matter of hours.
