nerdrage88sasr User ID: 717919 Australia 05/27/2012 07:23 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | good question... There wasn`t any significant flare or CME. Could someone explain me what the difference of this chart : [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] and this one is? [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] That's a good question, too, Nacht. The ACE electron detector is around one million miles closer to the Sun and the GOES electron detectors are in geosynchronus orbit around Earth and (usually) within the protection of the Magnetosphere. Basically ACE is recording the raw solar winds and GOES is recording what's leaking through the Earth's magnetic shield. However, it's bit unusual to see a spike like the ACE electrons from a C3 flare from a region still not facing us directly. This could be a harbinger of big things to come from region "whatever they're calling it". very interesting isnt it-- [link to www.solarham.net] bloody big spike, and seems to be still rising? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12566282 [link to www.sidc.be] Thanks, AC, here's the NASA cygnet model for the CME which caused the proton spike: [link to iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov:8080] There seems to be some confusion due to NOAA's retarded sunspot numbers. As I mentioned before, Solarsoft has changed all the flares attributed to 1492 to un-numbered coordinates. [link to www.lmsal.com] SIDC attributed the LDE flare to 1492, yet their own "flare-predictor" chart shows 1492 in another location. [link to sidc.oma.be] Solen Active Region Map: [link to www.solen.info] SOHO SS Map: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Solar Monitor seems to have given up; no data and no flare list: [link to www.solarmonitor.org] I'm glad I'm not the only one confused. Here's the chart for the C3.1 LDE flare from Solarsoft: [link to www.lmsal.com] I find it incredible if NOAA hasn't yet numbered a region we've been watching for 3 or 4 days now. Somehow our government bureaucracy can assign numbers to 100's of millions of people, yet they can't efficiently number 10 sunspots, hahaha. Anyway, Solarsoft has posted the SDO close-up of the LDE flare in two different colors...enjoy: [link to sdowww.lmsal.com] [link to sdowww.lmsal.com] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12566282 [link to imageshack.us] [link to www.solen.info] Ha, ha, that's great! Nice find, I was beginning to think we were being too hyper-critical of NOAA here at GLP. Maybe that's why Solar Monitor and Lockheed's Solarsoft has been de-listing NOAA active region numbers. I wish we knew the real scuttlebutt and "behind-the-scenes" pathos of the Heliophysics soap-opera. Any whistle-blowers out there? If the guy at Solen is complaining, it's a serious issue. The recent CME produced a large area of coronal dimming. :flare5/27: Here's a good synopsis of what coronal dimming signifies- One signature of expulsion of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the solar corona is the appearance of transient intensity dimmings in coronal images. These dimmings have generally been assumed to be due to discharge of CME material from the corona, and thus the "dimming regions" are thought of as an important signature of the sources of CMEs. More here: [link to iopscience.iop.org] Another good paper on coronal dimming: [link to www.mendeley.com] That CME really seemed to pack a punch....more like cannon firing-this is a region to be wary of. The last two major sunspot areas of March and May sure were an electrifying ride. Can't wait for the next monster sunspot action to start... Quoting: Solar Guardian I agree, Solar Guardian, we're havin' fun and learning a helluva lot. Never in history have we had so many imagers and data-gathering space platforms looking at solar activity. I was dumbfounded to find out that the top "know-it-all" astrophysicists don't yet understand what is happening on the Sun (but they'll be happy to tell ya 'bout black holes and the origins of space-time, LOL). To keep things in perspective, I just found a computer printout from Solarsoft from 2006. I think I found that website for the very first time and was so bewildered, I printed the page for later consideration. Anyway, my point is they were tracking A FLARES!! On the flare list, 6 out of 9 flares were A-flares and the rest were B's. I guess heliophysicists are lonely and bored during Solar Minimum. (Nov. 3rd, 2006 if you want to check their archives). By the way, there's been a double-header filament eruption in the NW and N. Central, possibly still in progress at this writing. Soon STEREO & SOHO will tell us what kind of CME we're facing. The GONG Udaipur Observatory has a self-updating movie: [link to halpha.nso.edu] SDO is back in top form, and watching the movie of recent 171 images, it seems the southeast has been heating up. All of the regions from mid-disk to the limb seem to be communicating with each other magnetically. The movie is better, but here's a recent AIA 171a image: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Last Edited by Hugh M Eye on 05/28/2012 04:40 AM |
