Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
Back to the discussion about Niacin and radiation.

I did find a few references to Niacin having been used to treat the victims of Chernobyl radiation. I an uncertain as to the scientific validity of these references, but as niacin has many know health benefits, I see no reason to doubt them.

"According to Dr. Bob, the prescription drug hydergine sandoz and large doses of niacin B3 were used in treating victims of radiation poisoning after the Chernobyl meltdown."

[link to www.restoreunity.org]

Also Niacin was mentioned in this blog posted by Dr Mark Sircus :

"Dear Mark, Have you heard about using niacin for preventing and possibly treating radiation sickness?
Apparently used during the nuclear testing period post-WWII by USA military.
My understanding is that it eliminates radiation from the body – most people think the niacin flushing as vascular dilation but if one observes carefully it follows old sun burn marks and old “age spots” start to disappear and often skin cancers fall off!
You are welcome to contact me as I believe that this information should be made public – the only reference I can find in today’s searching of the internet is with the Scientology movement – which for some may not sit comfortably but doesn’t mean to say it’s bad or wrong."

[link to blog.imva.info]

This blog is a great reference on radiation sickness, and I plan to post some excerpts from it.

However, since niacin sensitizes the thyroid tissue to radioactive Iodine,
[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
it would seem more reasonable to avoid large quantities of niacin while radioactive I 131 is still in the environment.

Then after 4 half lives of eight days each have elapsed (around 32 days) without additional I 131 being released, then it would seem to me that niacin could be used to help the body recover from radiation exposure.

Thanks for your input.

Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
This is a very informative blog that discusses the symptoms of ARS (acute radiation sickness) as well as some other important information.

Some of what I feel is the most important I will quote:

"Radiation can travel quickly in air currents. Students from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY measured radiation fallout in New York during atomic bomb testing over Nevada desert (2,300 miles away). Just a few hours after the explosion the students reported that the average radiation readings in nearby towns were 20-100 times higher. Radiation fallout travels quickly and is therefore dangerous."

"A spokesman for the Geneva-based U.N. health agency said contaminated food poses a greater long-term risk to residents’ health than radioactive particles in the air, which disperse within days. It was the strongest statement yet from the world body on radiation risks to ordinary people rather than nuclear workers. “They’re going to have to make some decisions quickly in Japan to shut down and completely stop food from being used from zones they feel might be affected,” Gregory Hartl told the Associated Press. “Repeated consumption of certain products is going to intensify risks, as opposed to radiation in the air that happens once and then the first time it rains there’s no longer radiation in the air. A week ago we were more concerned about the radiation leakages and possible explosion of the nuclear facility itself, but now other issues are getting more attention including the food safety issue".”

"The initial symptoms reported by the Japanese and (later by American) observers were the loss of hair from the scalp, bleeding into the skin, inflammation of the mouth and throat, vomiting, diarrhea and fever."

"Nausea and vomiting that appeared within a few hours after the explosion were frequently noted and while the vomiting usually subsided by the following morning, occasionally it continued for 2-3 more days. Diarrhea of varying degrees of severity was also observed and in severe cases, it was frequently bloody."

Thanks OP for collecting all of this..have you bookmarked ;)

Also, I don't know if someone else brought it up but with regards to liquid Iodine DON"T use the Povidone Iodine. Whether taking Potassium Iodide, etc pills or kelp, what have you, painting a 2"X2" area of skin with the Iodine and seeing rate of absorbtion. If less than 2 hours intake is too LOW, 2-3 hours intake is adequate, longer than 3 hours and you may be taking too much via the pills (natural sources are ok). Feel free to edit or delete if you know different.

No, from what I have read, that seems very reasonable. However, one of the original studies on topical iodine for radiation protection(from Japan, interestingly enough) was done using Povidone Iodine.

[link to www.jstage.jst.go.jp]

The toxicity situations seem to have occurred when people were ingesting very large quantities, had chronic exposure, open wounds or burns, very young babies or pregnant women.

There is also evidence that using iodized salt and consuming iodine rich (non-contaminated) foods on a regular basis lessens the risk to the thyroid gland from radioactive I 131. The risk is also proportional to age, with those being younger, at greater risk.

Yes, lots listed again on Ebay:

[link to shop.ebay.com]

You can also buy potassium iodide (KI) from a chemical supply house, but you must accurately measure dose in mg.

[link to cgi.ebay.com]

If you live in a humid climate potassium iodate (KIO3) has a longer shelf life and is used in other countries, but not technically "FDA approved".

I am not sure that its benefits are proven or just wishful thinking. Along with being illegal, there are other risks as well.

"OBJECTIVES: Marijuana smoking has been implicated as a causative factor in traditionally tobacco-related tumors of the head and neck and of the lung. When associated with marijuana use, such tumors occur in a much younger patient population than do similar tumors in tobacco smokers. Owing to the large number of young men with a history of marijuana presenting with transitional cell carcinoma to VA facilities, this study was designed to compare the marijuana use among young (aged less than 60 years) transitional cell carcinoma patients with that among age-matched controls."

"RESULTS: Of the 52 transitional cell carcinoma patients, 46 (88.5%) reported a history of habitual marijuana usage, and 72 (69.2%) of the age-matched controls gave a history of habitual marijuana use. This difference was statistically significant (P = 0.008). In those with transitional cell carcinoma, marijuana use significantly correlated with tumor stage, grade, and number of recurrences."

"CONCLUSIONS: Marijuana smoking might increase the risk of transitional cell carcinoma."

Alcohol however, especially wine may be another matter:

"The principal phenolic and alcoholic components of wine protect human lymphocytes against hydrogen peroxide- and ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage in vitro."

"The results obtained showed that ethanol, glycerol, the catechin-caffeic acid mixture, the mixture of all components and the stripped white wine significantly reduced the DNA-damaging effects of hydrogen peroxide and gamma-radiation."

"The strongest protective effect against DNA damage by gamma-irradiation was observed for the catechin-caffeic acid mixture and the mixture of all components (30 and 32% reduction, respectively). These two treatments as well as ethanol produced the strongest protective effects against DNA damage by hydrogen peroxide (24, 25 and 18%, respectively)."

" In conclusion, our results suggest that the main phenolic and alcoholic components of wine can reduce the DNA-damaging effects of two important oxidants, i.e. hydrogen peroxide and ionizing radiation, in this physiologically relevant in vitro system."

Uncaria Tomentosa (cat's claw has many beneficial effects as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, Antitumoral, and possibly effective against viral cytokine storm.

Given that it has anti-inflammatory properties, it would presumably have some benefit against ionizing radiation, but I could not specifically find a reference to that.

"Uncaria tomentosa, a large woody vine native to the Amazon and Central American rainforests has been used medicinally by indigenous peoples since ancient times and has scientifically proven immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities.

"Several inflammatory mediators that are implicated in vascular permeability and shock are produced after Dengue Virus (DENV) infection by monocytes, the primary targets for virus replication."

"We conclude that the alkaloidal fraction was the most effective in reducing monocyte infection rates and cytokine levels. The antiviral and immunomodulating in vitro effects from U. tomentosa pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids displayed novel properties regarding therapeutic procedures in Dengue Fever and might be further investigated as a promising candidate for clinical application.

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

It is also known to be antimicrobial:

"Antimicrobial activity of Uncaria tomentosa against oral human pathogens."

"Three percent Uncaria tomentosa inhibited 8% of Enterobacteriaceae isolates, 52% of S. mutans and 96% of Staphylococcus spp. It could be concluded that micropulverized Uncaria tomentosa presented antimicrobial activity on Enterobacteriaceae, S. mutans and Staphylococcus spp. isolates. [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

"The objective of this study was to evaluate the renoprotective effects of Uncaria Tomentosa (cat's claw) on ischemic acute kidney injury induced by renal clamping in rats. The hypoxia and hypoperfusion increase the production of reactive species already present in the inflammatory process. Results showed that the renal function evaluated by creatinine clearance, the urinary excretion of peroxides and malondealdehyde indexes demonstrated that UT induced renoprotection, probably related to its antioxidant activities."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

"Antitumoral and antioxidant effects of a hydroalcoholic extract of cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) (Willd. Ex Roem. & Schult) in an in vivo carcinosarcoma model."

"CONCLUSIONS: This data represent an in vivo demonstration of both antitumoral and antioxidant effects of UT hydroalcoholic extract. The antineoplastic activity may result, partially at least, from the ability of UT to regulate redox and metabolism homeostasis."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Although this is not recommended for persons with Parkinson's disease:

Uncaria tomentosa (UT), also known as cat's claw, isa Peruvian Rubiaceae species widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of a wide range of health problems. There is no report about the use, safety, and efficacy of UT in neurological disorders. We describe reversible worsening of motor signs in a patient with Parkinson disease after oral intake of UT, and some possible explanations are discussed.

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Selinium is proposed as a possible DNA repair supplement. I will look for some others:

"Selenium (Se) is an essential dietary component for animals including humans and is regarded as a protective agent against cancer. Although the mode of anticancer action of Se is not fully understood yet, several mechanisms, such as antioxidant protection by selenoenzymes, specific inhibition of tumor cell growth by Se metabolites, modulation of cell cycle and apoptosis, and effect on DNA repair have all been proposed."

Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
Actually a form of Niacin (Nicotinamide) has also been proposed for DNA repair:

See the above discussion on Niacin

"Nicotinamide is a water-soluble amide form of niacin (nicotinic acid or vitamin B3). Both niacin and nicotinamide are widely available in plant and animal foods, and niacin can also be endogenously synthesized in the liver from dietary tryptophan. Nicotinamide is also commercially available in vitamin supplements and in a range of cosmetic, hair, and skin preparations. Nicotinamide is the primary precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)), an essential coenzyme in ATP production and the sole substrate of the nuclear enzyme poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-1 (PARP-1). Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have clearly shown that PARP-1 and NAD(+) status influence cellular responses to genotoxicity which can lead to mutagenesis and cancer formation. This paper will examine the role of nicotinamide in the protection from carcinogenesis, DNA repair, and maintenance of genomic stability." [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Thank you for all your posts, they are much appreciated. Since I use several of these supplements/foods daily normally, its nice to know they may be helpful with radiation. I don't believe you mentioned Beta 1,3, Glucans. I remember reading a good study regarding survival of mice exposed to lethal doses of radiation......70% survival I believe amongst those receiving the beta 1.3. glucan.
