I did find a few references to Niacin having been used to treat the victims of Chernobyl radiation. I an uncertain as to the scientific validity of these references, but as niacin has many know health benefits, I see no reason to doubt them.

However, since niacin sensitizes the thyroid tissue to radioactive Iodine,

it would seem more reasonable to avoid large quantities of niacin while radioactive I 131 is still in the environment.

Then after 4 half lives of eight days each have elapsed (around 32 days) without additional I 131 being released, then it would seem to me that niacin could be used to help the body recover from radiation exposure.

This is a very informative blog that discusses the symptoms of ARS (acute radiation sickness) as well as some other important information.

Some of what I feel is the most important I will quote:

Also, I don't know if someone else brought it up but with regards to liquid Iodine DON"T use the Povidone Iodine. Whether taking Potassium Iodide, etc pills or kelp, what have you, painting a 2"X2" area of skin with the Iodine and seeing rate of absorbtion. If less than 2 hours intake is too LOW, 2-3 hours intake is adequate, longer than 3 hours and you may be taking too much via the pills (natural sources are ok). Feel free to edit or delete if you know different.

No, from what I have read, that seems very reasonable. However, one of the original studies on topical iodine for radiation protection(from Japan, interestingly enough) was done using Povidone Iodine.

The toxicity situations seem to have occurred when people were ingesting very large quantities, had chronic exposure, open wounds or burns, very young babies or pregnant women.

There is also evidence that using iodized salt and consuming iodine rich (non-contaminated) foods on a regular basis lessens the risk to the thyroid gland from radioactive I 131. The risk is also proportional to age, with those being younger, at greater risk.

If you live in a humid climate potassium iodate (KIO3) has a longer shelf life and is used in other countries, but not technically "FDA approved".

unfortunately most of the good miso is made in Japan, Korea, and on the West Coast.

I have also heard that THC in marijuana will also help protect you from all kinds of radiation.

I am not sure that its benefits are proven or just wishful thinking. Along with being illegal, there are other risks as well.

Uncaria Tomentosa (cat's claw has many beneficial effects as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, Antitumoral, and possibly effective against viral cytokine storm.

Given that it has anti-inflammatory properties, it would presumably have some benefit against ionizing radiation, but I could not specifically find a reference to that.

"Uncaria tomentosa, a large woody vine native to the Amazon and Central American rainforests has been used medicinally by indigenous peoples since ancient times and has scientifically proven immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities.

"Several inflammatory mediators that are implicated in vascular permeability and shock are produced after Dengue Virus (DENV) infection by monocytes, the primary targets for virus replication."

"We conclude that the alkaloidal fraction was the most effective in reducing monocyte infection rates and cytokine levels. Selinium is proposed as a possible DNA repair supplement. I will look for some others:

Thank you for all your posts, they are much appreciated. Since I use several of these supplements/foods daily normally, its nice to know they may be helpful with radiation. I don't believe you mentioned Beta 1,3, Glucans. I remember reading a good study regarding survival of mice exposed to lethal doses of radiation......70% survival I believe amongst those receiving the beta 1.3. glucan.
