Speaking-of "poo" in hair- I've heard somewhere that the way to create dreadlocks involves adding "dung"-(poop), to one's hair.
So I'm assuming that they mean manure, like-in cow, or pig?
Does anyone know anything about it?

what about using Dr. Bronners soap? I like the way it smells and it doesn't have anything unnatural in it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10136704

Dr Bronner's is the only shower soap I've used for over 20 years, still use it... but would probably be better off using just water, truth be told.

Any bar soap, even 'natural' types have always caused me problems, Dr. Bronner's never bothered me or scum up the shower.

So you still wash your hair OP, do you just use soap?

And what about hair gels or pomade products, good or bad to use?

Chemicals are chemicals

there are natural replacements for hair gel etc. but, once your hair adjusts to it's healthy and natural state, you don't need them.

and it's been mentioned many times in this thread - baking soda and water for washing, followed by vinegar and water

I wash my hair once a month when it gets cut, that's it and my hair is awesome, shiny, smells good and not oily at all.

Those of you guys using shampoo are messing up your hair and head.

It's so funny to see dandruff commercials...

You use shampoo till it destroys your scalp, then switch to dandruff shampoo (directions will say it works best to use every day, eh).

Some people will even go to a doctor to get prescription 'medicated shampoo' for their out of control dandruff/itchy scalp.

Sheep.

A friend of mine with long hair stopped using shampoo of any kind, just rinsing thoroughly with tepid water in the shower. At first, for about a month, it looked a little odd, but then it started to look beautiful, and it still does today, years since she last used anything on her hair.

no, you do not need to use pyrithione zinc, you need to modify your diet to remove toxins and do a better job supporting your body with nutrients. look into minerals, omega fatty acids, and aloe vera extract.

I don't know where the OP lives but I live in a VERY humid climate - the wettest spot on earth - and kicking the shampoo habit has been the best thing I've ever done for my hair!

My hair/scalp was literally screwed from the chemicals in shampoos. I could wash and condition it and when it dried my hair frizzed out and my scalp had what looked like cradle cap (and I'm 30!).
My hair is down to my waist and very thick. It's been a little less than a month with using just baking soda and apple cider vinegar twice a week and I love it. My husband has even made comment about how much healthier my hair looks. I may get a little dandruff by the third day of not washing it but it easily brushes out. And speaking of brushing, with as thick and long as my hair is it gets tangled bad and I have no problem brushing through it now.

Wash your hair you freakin hippie. You probalby pee in the shower too don't you....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 944253

you just got me thinking. I have tried the no shampoo thing several times without success because my hair gets very oily/waxy and no amount of scrubbing/combing/brushing/rinsing works. And yes I've left it unshampood for months.

in the olden days they used to use mares urine as a permanent wave solution, so maybe washing ones hair with piss might break down the wax?

Just an idea!

Answer me this: What is normal?
What society tells us is normal? Like soaking our bodies in chemicals that screw up our systems? Then when those chemicals cause thyroid disorders or other health conditions then we are not normal because we are fat or we don't have a perfect complexion. I guess normal is a fat person with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol...right?

What about the scalp. If I don't use shampoo my scalp gets super freaking itchy.
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

Baking soda and water - massage it into the scalp - rinse

then seal the cuticle with apple cider vinegar and water - rinse with cold water
 Quoting: Da Purple Chicken

yeah that isnt as great, or as hassle free as it sounds. Baking soda is granular and alkaline and doesnt rinse out completely which leaves your hair feeling powdery and coated.

That is why you have to follow up with vinegar (acidic).

It might work in a fashion but getting the mix right every time isnt easy. If you have naturally coarse or wiry hair it may be ok.
