I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.

I'm fine with not using shampoo to wash my hair but I still want to style my hair. Are you telling me you simply dry your hair from the shower and walk in public like that? So even though your hair may be shiny and smelling nice and the best hair of your life, your saying it looks flat and boring all the time as a result?

I'm a guy. I will not use shampoo in my hair but I still want to use: gel, putty, moose, hairspray (NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME OBVIOUSLY)

I'm just wondering if there's anything I can put in it to give it a bit of a shiny look and smell nice

Small amount of coconut oil worked in while wet. How small depends on how naturally dry or oily your hair is and the length.

I have been doing the baking soda and vinegar thing since this thread started... and I have to say, I have noticed a huge improvement in the condition of my hair. It feels thicker, is way shinier, and no longer has a 'fly-away' appearance.

I use it every other day at the moment... cause the longest I could stand before it felt greasy and yuck, was 3 days. As my body adapts i will go longer between using the soda/vinegar combination.

One added side benefit, is that my scalp rarely itches now. Whereas before when I was using shampoos I had to keep changing them all the time due to the fact my scalp would react. It would drive me crazy sometimes...

So overall, this is working very well for me.

I agree with you on this one OP. I quit using shampoo a few months ago and I cant belive how good my hair looks. Its as soft as silk! I just scrub the shit out of it when I'm in the shower. Doesnt stink, its not greasy. Its just awesome!

Interesting. I started just rinsing my hair every other day, instead of washing it every other. Looks better, and definitely not so dry. I do wash it once a week and condition it, but I think I'll just condition once a week instead.

My experience with Apple Cider Vinegar is that it takes a while to take effect. It is a proven method to get rid of Dandruff but you have to leave it on your head for at least 10-15 minutes a day for it to sink in.

I use ACV to get rid of moles and a wart(yuck) but it WORKED. No $2000 for laser removal... simple 1 week of soaking cotton wool and leaving it on over night. I LOVE NATURAL STUFFZ

I have dandruff problems (I think they started like 4 years ago, more or less), so I use a special shampoo for that. And it only reduces it, for a few days, but not cure it at all. Do you know any natural treatment for that? I also want to leave the shampoo thing, my hair it's too greasy on the roots and normal-dry on the rest. I'm tired of that! I've been told that the dandruff could be caused for using hot water, but with this cold winter there's nothing I can do to help it..

It's apparently a big secret-- just stop putting sodium lauryl sulfate in your fucking hair. It's making you go bald fellas. It's giving you split ends and frizz, gentlewomen.

Your hair won't stink; in fact, you will smell more of your body's pheromones; the compounds that tell the opposite sex, "Hey. You there, with the cute face. Be attracted to me."

You are not only paying for your scalp's demise, you're actively applying the poisons that do it to you.
Quit that.

Jesus.

(Disclaimer-- Alot of retardedly expensive "organic" shampoos lack this compound, and aren't bad for your hair. They just strip your hair of all the natural, necessary oils your body produces specifically to nourish your follicles, and then (if you condition as well) puts back the wrong sort of oil to do the same job. Herp.

Native Americans used the root of Carnations to wash their hair. They also had a dandruff remedy made from Chaparral bush.

Google JABON DE TIERRA, JABON DE LA TIERRA

you would think it smells bad but it doesnt. and you can put some natural essences/fragrances.

Washed my hair just with water, didn't had any baking soda in he house.

Did a long and deep wash, "scratching" my head for 3-5 minutes, always with hot water running along.

For a first day it looks good: nothing oily or "weird". :) Happy camper here :)) ahahah Pretty neat, just ope this goes well tomorrow with the soda + vinegar.

I'l be posting updates here.

I am still doing this since this thread starting and I LOVE IT. I am so pissed that I have spent so much money on shampoos over the years. Who knew not using it could be so awesome. My hair looks so much better than it did. And I am not saturating myself in chemicals like a moron.

I also tried a natural hair bar. Any of you guys tried those? My hair looked exceptional afterwards. Full, shiny, tons of volume and THICKER. My hair is usually very flat and thin.

I am trying to go 2-3 days between washings and just rinsing in between. I hope I can stretch it out longer as the oil on my scalp regulates itself.

Thanks so much for this thread.

I'm a guy so I have never used shampoo. I shower daily with ivory soap and use that on my hair too.

It has always supposed to be 99.?% pure, but pure what I don't know.

I really love to see women with clean healthy looking hair that has a nice sheen or shine to it, very alluring.

Just wanted to give an update. Been doing the no poo thing since this thread started. First week my hair was pretty oily, but now it is gotten much less oily. I was going every other day "washing" my hair with the baking soda/vinegar solution. Now I can go every third day and it looks great. Looking forward to stretching the washes out longer and just rinsing in between. Looks like the scalp is self-regulating the oil pretty well. Some people say it takes weeks for it to stop producing so much oil to over-compensate for the chemical stripping shampoo does to your hair and scalp, but it is happening pretty fast for me.

I love this. Thanks. My hair looks and feels amazing.

I agree, same here, started a few months ago. I still do deep condition the ends and use jojoba oil to moisturize it after I shower. Amazing how fast it dries now, too. The only down side is that when I need to color it, it messes up my scalp again and I have to start over.
 Quoting: SaintIn

I stopped coloring my hair a little over a year ago. I was so sick of it; those gray roots coming through all the time, etc., so I decided I would stop faking it and just go gray.

I tried that once before but didn't go through with it; this time I got inspired by one of the mom's in my son's school who has nearly white hair but a very young face and is absolutely great looking. I thought, if she can do it, I can do it, and stuck with it this time. Now I really enjoy my gray streaks -- it actually looks kind of elegant -- and would not go back.

I also went no-poo ca. three months ago and like it that way, although my (chin-length) hair does look greasy if I don't do the baking soda/vinegar concoction for more than four or five days. I'm wondering if I should leave even that out and go without anything for a while to normalize my scalp and hair.

The vinegar acts as a conditioner. I notice if I use too much my hair is greasy. If I use only a little, just a tablespoon or two, mixed with about a cup of water, it is perfect. And I focus it on the ends of the hair. It turns out better if you rinse with cold water instead of warm or hot as that seals the cuticle and flattens it and makes the hair reflect light so it shines a lot.

My hair/scalp was literally screwed from the chemicals in shampoos. I could wash and condition it and when it dried my hair frizzed out and my scalp had what looked like cradle cap (and I'm 30!).
My hair is down to my waist and very thick. It's been a little less than a month with using just baking soda and apple cider vinegar twice a week and I love it. My husband has even made comment about how much healthier my hair looks. I may get a little dandruff by the third day of not washing it but it easily brushes out. And speaking of brushing, with as thick and long as my hair is it gets tangled bad and I have no problem brushing through it now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7879694

I pity your husband. I wouldn't touch your head for nothing. Deep down he'd prefer a nice smelling woman with shiny hair.
 Quoting: Bebu 1154206

You really need to try it yourself, otherwise you don't know what you're talking about. When I told my husband -- who's a complete neat freak -- some months ago that I wanted to try the no-poo way, he made a pretty big fuss, as in, you're gonna stink and look greasy, I won't touch you anymore, etc. So I silently went ahead and did it. After the initial adjustment (where you admittedly do look a little greasy), my hair is shiny and easily combable now.

The other day I asked my hubby what he thought of my hair, how it looked, smelled, etc. He said, why, it's fine, it smells good, looks good. So I fessed up and told him I hadn't used shampoo and conditioner in over a month. Now he's fine with that.
