Texas Brine Co. LLC has shut down one of its two vent wells burning off methane trapped under the Bayou Corne community after potentially deadly hydrogen sulfide gas was encountered, company officials confirmed Tuesday.

Sonny Cranch, spokesman for Houston-based Texas Brine, said the well was sealed about 7 p.m. Monday and remained closed Tuesday as company officials worked on the next step.

He said a small amount of the gas was released from equipment that separates impurities from the methane that is coming from the well to a flare burning off the natural gas.

The gas, produced by mixing certain household ingredients, was used in a suicide wave in 2008 in Japan.

Office of Conservation-
Texas Brine’s second vent well (drilled and perforated near the top of the Napoleonville Salt Dome cap rock, much deeper than the shallower aquifer vent wells constructed in the area), encountered hydrogen sulfide gas as venting operations were initiated. Air monitoring detected the hydrogen sulfide gas during venting/flaring operations, and Texas Brine shut the well in to prevent any potential for release. The Office of Conservation concurred with that action to ensure safety of the public and workers on the site. Texas Brine has also established a safety perimeter around the well, including use of barricades and gas monitors, under the oversight of Conservation staff on site. Hydrogen sulfide does sometimes occur naturally in the cap rock of salt domes, and while the cap rock of the Napoleonville Salt Dome does underlie the Texas Brine facility, it does not extend to the Bayou Corne community. Additionally, ongoing daily environmental safety testing in the Bayou Corne community by DEQ has included tests for hydrogen sulfide, and it has not been detected in the community to date. Additionally, DEQ took an extra round of samples today and will continue to monitor the community. The Office of Conservation will be meeting with Texas Brine representatives to further assess the next steps to be taken with the well.

H2S will kill you just a breath... By the Tim you feel the burn it is too late.... Nasty shit.... Now if they want to continue to vent all they need to do is install an H2S scrubber then vent and burn the scrubbed natural gas... Basically activated charcoal will scrub the H2S.... We do it all the time in Texas... It is called sour gas...

we knew about the hydrogen sulfide 3 months ago, look at the assumptions thread. I'll go find it.

Here it is: the information starts talking about hydroxide (mine OH) but we couldn't be sure what he was saying.

Often H2S forms when a well has biological material introduced into the rock formation, often this happens during the fresh water fracturing process if there is not enough biocides used...and O2 scrubbers

Thats all fine and well if you have a well thats acting properly. In this case next to impossible. They sealed the well but that won't prevent it from coming up someplace else now. Path of least resistance. That was a panic move. Next Step....? Evacuate everybody.

Fuck this is really bad and not even by the other one. I told you guys a long time ago. That whole area is unstable for hundreds of miles. Get the fuck out of there if you please and thankyou. Please.

When h2s comes into contact with water it turns into sulfuric acid
