"Administration still pushing for assault weapons ban: Biden"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that the Obama administration would continue to press for an assault weapons ban as part of gun control legislation despite a serious setback on the issue earlier this week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid acknowledged on Tuesday that there was not enough support for the ban in the Senate, meaning it would fail when gun control legislation comes to the floor of the chamber next month.

Biden, who has led President Barack Obama's push for tighter gun regulations, said he was undeterred...."

"Trafficking crackdown may be Obama's best chance on gun control"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Winning a crackdown on gun traffickers may be the best that President Barack Obama can get in his faltering efforts to have Congress pass gun control legislation.

Lawmakers are scaling back the White House's ambitions for sweeping gun control measures after a planned ban on assault weapons was effectively ruled out in the Senate this week.

Two Senators involved in the gun debate said on Wednesday that a bill to tackle trafficking looks like it is the gun control measure with the most chance of success.

"The most likely bill to pass" is a measure that would make it a federal crime to purchase guns for someone who is barred from owning one, said Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate.

Such transactions, dubbed "straw purchases," allow criminals to obtain firearms while avoiding background checks.

Durbin, from Illinois, said straw purchasing "is flooding Chicago with guns." The prospect of 15 years in jail under the bill will frighten off people who buy weapons for Chicago criminals, he said.

"It scares the hell out of them. It should be scaring the hell out of them. That's why I think this will be the lead piece of legislation," Durbin told a Wall Street Journal breakfast roundtable with reporters.

Durbin said the only other gun-related measure that will likely win approval is one to provide $40 million a year for 10 years to bolster school security. It is seen as a minor step in the fight against gun violence. "It is virtually non-controversial," Durbin said...."

"Gun control suffers two setbacks in Congress"

[link to blog.constitutioncenter.org]

"A Democratic proposal to ban the sale of assault weapons officially ended on Tuesday, when a lack of bipartisan support doomed the ban in the Senate. Also, background checks appear to remain in limbo.

Majority leader Harry Reid said he was withdrawing the assault weapons legislation after he couldn’t get within 20 votes of the 60 needed to avoid a filibuster. In fact, Reid said he couldn’t muster 40 votes, meaning that at least 15 Democrats or independents opposed the ban.

Reid also indicated that universal background checks, including checks on private gun sales, needed help to make it to a floor vote after Easter.

“There are a couple different background check proposals floating around,” Reid said. “All these issues are important and I’m going to do what I can to make sure we have a fair, sound debate on this but we can’t have it unless I have something that I can put on the floor to proceed to it,” Reid said in remarks reported by The Hill.

The current background check proposal was offered by Senator Chuck Schumer over the objections of several members of a bipartisan committee. Schumer intended it as a “placeholder” until a compromise could be negotiated, but that hasn’t been forthcoming.

Reid may introduce three gun-control measures as a package to the Senate, including two measures that have wider support: increased penalties for gun trafficking and more money for school safety. He’s currently waiting to see if a compromise background check measure can be part of the package...."

Magpul Industries says it plans to begin packing up as soon as possible for a move to several other states. A search is under way to find new locations.

"Book Talk: "Gun Guys: A Road Trip" explores America's gun culture"

[link to ca.omg.yahoo.com]

"By Randall Mikkelsen

BOSTON (Reuters) - Writer Dan Baum, a self-described Jewish liberal Democrat and a gun enthusiast since childhood, strapped a revolver to his side in 2009 and set off on an 18-month, 15,000 mileexploration of the U.S. firearms culture.

His book, "Gun Guys: A Road Trip," was released this month amid a gun-control debate rekindled by the December 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Baum, who lives in Boulder, Colorado, says it was a challenge to write for two polarized audiences: liberals and fiercely protective gun lovers.

He spoke to Reuters about America's gun culture, semi-automatic weapons and what he learned about himself from writing the book.

Q: Are you a gun guy, or were you acting?

A: I'm a gun guy, and I live in a world of anti-gun people. Being a liberal Democrat, my whole social world is among people who dislike guns and dislike gun people.

Q: What should gun-control advocates know about America's gun culture?

A: Guns are cool; they're fun; they're mechanically gorgeous; they last forever.

But the really deep stuff is - we have a lot of freedom in this country to own guns. Our gun laws bespeak a trust in the people. And for the gun guys, this is really what America is about.

The ones who mostly buy guns are straight, white, middle-aged men, rural, who have not finished college, and that is a demographic that has seen their world collapse in all kinds of ways. The NRA (National Rifle Association) comes along and whispers in their ear, "Yeah, you're pissed, you know why? Because the liberals want to take away your guns."

Gun guys derive tremendous pride from being able to manage these incredibly dangerous devices safely, and then along come these pointy-headed urban liberals who have never had any guns, and they want to tell you that you can't be trusted with this device. It is unimaginably offensive.

It was entirely TOO predictable...

It is detrimental how law legislators are acting as vultures in our Republics. They are trying to use a tragedy for their voracity power. Votes are their power, but voters do not last long. They should remember it.

I live in CT very close to Sandy Hook. Many questions must be answer. In the mid time, we have to live with what it is.

"NRA Poised to Scuttle Gun Legislation Most Americans Want"

[link to www.bloomberg.com]

"Legislation to expand background checks for U.S. gun purchases, which has overwhelming public support and bipartisan backing in Congress, is at risk of being derailed by a paperwork requirement.

The National Rifle Association and some Republicans in Congress are arguing that background-check data could be used to build a secret national registry of U.S. gun owners. And that, they contend, may be used by the federal government to confiscate guns.

“When the universal background checks don’t work, then registration will be proposed to enforce them,” Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said as he voted against a background-check bill in a Senate committee last week. “And when that doesn’t work, because criminals won’t register their guns, we may be looking at confiscation.”

A 1993 federal law requires background checks for all commercial gun sales. Advocates for a tougher law -- including police officers, religious leaders and big-city mayors -- want to expand the rules to sales at gun shows and weapons transfers between non-relatives. It’s the one major proposal to curb gun violence made by President Barack Obama after the Dec. 14 shootings at a Connecticut elementary school that has bipartisan support in Congress. Polls show a majority of Americans endorse gun background checks.

Three months after 20 children and six employees were killed in Newtown, Senate Democratic leaders have dropped an assault weapons ban from proposed gun legislation. A ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines used in a number of U.S. mass shootings also faces strong opposition in Congress.

Sales Records

Licensed U.S. gun dealers have been keeping sales records, on government form 4473, since passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968. The proposal by Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer of New York would require firearms dealers to maintain paper records on behalf of private gun sellers as well.

Advocates say requiring background checks for private sales would help keep weapons away from criminals and mentally ill people at risk of committing violent acts. Federal law prohibits the creation of a national gun registry.

Senate talks aimed at gaining the support of Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican whose blessing is considered vital to bringing other Republicans on board, are bogged down over Coburn’s objections to the recordkeeping requirement. While Schumer is seeking other potential Republican sponsors from pro-gun states, so far there are no takers...."

"Hick’s Decision to Sign Gun Control Bills Fuels Heated Backlash"

[link to thecoloradoobserver.com]

"DENVER–As expected, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed three gun-control bills into law Wednesday, and as expected, the fallout was immediate.

Within hours, gun-rights advocates had launched a three-prong attack on the Democratic legislature’s gun-control package, vowing to battle the measures on the legal, economic and political fronts.

Independence Institute president Jon Caldara announced Wednesday that the free-market think-tank would head up a legal challenge against the bills.

Meanwhile, Magpul Industries confirmed in a Facebook post that the company would make good on its promise to leave Colorado if the bill to limit magazine capacity were signed.

“Our transition to a new home will occur in a phased and orderly a manner to allow us to continue to serve our customers during the move, as well as to allow an orderly transition for affected employees,” said the Wednesday post. “We are actively working on those plans.”

On the political front, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners kicked off a petition drive to repeal the newly signed measures. Another group, SaveOurShotguns.org, has already begun gathering signatures to repeal House Bill 1224, the magazine-capacity bill.

Gun-rights groups have also targeted for defeat Democrats from rural or swing districts who voted in favor of all or some of the gun-control bills. Among those expected to face difficult reelection fights in 2014 are state Sens. Michael McLachlan (D-Durango), Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) and Jeanne Nicholson (D-Georgetown).

“We have said for years that Colorado is the national test case to turn a freedom-loving western state into a progressive stronghold,” said Caldara in an email. “Today Colorado citizens learned the hard way that elections have consequences. Today our governor cemented our path to become California.

But I guarantee you, this fight has just begun.”

He said the lawsuit would be filed on behalf of a coalition that includes “local and national law enforcement, including many of the sheriffs who opposed the bills, disability-rights organizations, gun-safety organizations, civil-rights organizations, and others.”

Caldara said the lead attorney on the case would be David Kopel, the institute’s policy director and a nationally recognized expert on the Second Amendment. Kopel has described the magazine bill as a “grotesque overreach.”

The three bills signed by the governor will ban the sale and transfer of ammunition magazines that hold or can be readily converted to more than 15 rounds; mandate universal background checks for gun sales and transfers, and require gun buyers to pay for their background checks...."

"Biden and Bloomberg urge Congress to have ‘courage’ on gun laws"

"NEW YORK—Vice President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a joint appeal to members of Congress, urging lawmakers to ignore politics and do the “right thing” by passing new federal gun-control laws.

In an appearance at City Hall, Biden and Bloomberg were joined by family members of some of those killed in December’s mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in urging Congress to immediately pass legislation including stricter rules on background checks and a ban on assault weapons, which they both described as “weapons of war.”

“It’s time for the political establishment to show the courage that your daughter showed,” Biden told the father of Lauren Rousseau, a Sandy Hook teacher killed while trying to protect her students.

The vice president signaled the White House wasn’t giving up on its push to ban assault weapons, insisting “this is not about anybody’s constitutional right to own a weapon.”

He added, “For all of those who say we can’t and shouldn’t ban assault weapons, for all those who say the politics is just too hard, how can they say that? When you take a look at those 20 beautiful babies and what happened to them? And those six teachers and administrators? Think about Newtown. Think about Newtown...."

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Public mass shootings in America -- like the slaughter of schoolchildren and staff at Sandy Hook Elementary -- have left 547 people dead and 476 more injured since 1983, according to a new report from the Congressional Research Service. The CRS study – which was made public by the Federation of American Scientists – does not weigh in on whether restricting access to guns or ammunition would prevent future incidents.

Those figures – which cover only the deaths of people other than the shooter or shooters – show that mass shootings represent a relatively small proportion of overall deaths by firearms in the United States, the CRS report said. FBI figures show that guns were used to murder 8,583 people in 2011 alone.

“While tragic and shocking, public mass shootings account for few of the murders or non-negligent homicides related to firearms that occur annually in the United States,” the CRS said

"Vulnerable senators face lose-lose scenario on assault weapon vote"

[link to thehill.com]

"The Senate’s upcoming vote on the assault weapons ban is going to put vulnerable Democrats in a difficult spot.

Democrats facing tough reelection races will either attract the ire of the National Rifle Association or prominent gun control activists such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I). A vote against the ban could spark primary challenges that could weaken Democrats in the general election.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) this week decided to remove the ban from firearms legislation scheduled for the floor. However, he has promised Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) a floor vote on her assault weapons amendment.

Reid said Tuesday the proposal would not muster 40 votes, and interviews with rank-and-file lawmakers show that seems accurate.

A wave of Democratic defections on the assault weapons ban would not sit well with gun-control and liberal advocacy groups. They warn Democratic senators who vote to kill one of President Obama’s biggest priorities will suffer political repercussions.

“People are not going to say, ‘That’s a tough vote for them, let’s not do anything,’ ” said Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. “There is a feeling that to win this thing we need all the Democrats. That means people who are in tough races in 2014 don’t get passes. I would expect issue ads and advocacy for all senators.”

Even Democrats who reliably vote with their leadership, such as Sens. Mark Warner (Va.), Tim Kaine (Va.) and Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), on Wednesday said they were not certain they would support the assault weapons ban. Warner faces reelection in 2014. Kaine, who formerly headed the Democratic National Committee, was on Obama’s short list to be his running mate in 2008.

A spokesman for Stabenow told The Hill on Thursday that his boss plans to vote for the assault weapons ban.

Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, warned that Democrats who vote against the assault weapons ban could depress liberal turnout in the 2014 midterm election.

“With guns, it will be a major election issue for Democrats. Opposing strong gun laws could mean depressing their base, which in the off year would be a very bad idea,” Green said.

He said if any Democratic primary challengers emerge, votes against gun laws could become lines of attack.

“If there is a credible primary challenger, a vote against strong gun laws would absolutely hurt an incumbent Democrat,” he said.

Of the six Democratic senators facing reelection in states carried by Mitt Romney, only Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) faces the slim threat of a credible primary challenger. Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) raised eyebrows last month when his staff touted a poll showing him leading Baucus by almost 20 points in a hypothetical match-up...."

"Police Departments Beg And Barter For Ammo While DHS Buys Up 1.6 Billion Rounds In Past Year"

[link to cnsnews.com]

"The nationwide shortage of ammunition has left many police departments scrambling to get their hands on the necessary rounds - with some even bartering among each other.

Meanwhile, Rep. Timothy Huelskamp (R-Kansas) says the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has failed to respond to multiple members of Congress asking why DHS bought more than 1.6 billion rounds in the past year.

Police Chief Cameron Arthur of Jenks, Oklahoma says, "Ammunition and assault weapons in general have skyrocketed...In addition to the fact, not only is it a lot more expensive, but the time to get it could be six months to a year, or in some cases even longer."

Arthur says he is waiting on an order placed last October and that many departments have begun to trade and barter with each other because of the high demand.

"Most police departments are having a very difficult time even getting the necessary ammunition for handguns, shotguns and especially rifles," Arthur said.

"With the delay in ammunition, some departments are limiting the number of rounds they carry in their handgun because of the shortage of ammunition. We get to the point where it is difficult to have enough ammo to train and also equip the officers...."

"Rangel’s Assault Weapons Whopper"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Rep. Charlie Rangel falsely claimed there are “millions of kids dying, being shot down by assault weapons.” In fact, fewer than 100,000 persons younger than 20 years old died of gun violence, including suicide, over a 30-year period through 2010, government data show. About two-thirds of those deaths — or nearly 65,000 — were homicides.

That’s for all guns, not just assault weapons. We don’t know how many of them were killed by assault weapons, but federally funded studies have shown that such weapons are used in a small percentage of crimes.

Rangel, a New York Democrat, discussed the prospect of the proposed assault weapons ban on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co.” The host, Chris Jansing, asked Rangel why the Senate bill, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, did not have the support it needed for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to post the bill for a vote. Rangel blamed politics and money, particularly the lobbying of the National Rifle Association. He called it a “moral issue.”

Rangel, March 21: We’re talking about millions of kids dying, being shot down by assault weapons. We’re talking about handguns where it’s easier in the inner cities to get these guns and to get computers. This is not just a political issue. It’s a moral issue.

Millions? That’s simply not supported by the facts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control database shows that over a 30-year period — from 1981 to 2010 — there were about 939,782 violence-related firearm deaths. That includes all ages, not just children, and all types of violence-related deaths, including suicides and legal interventions, such as justifiable deaths caused by police action. (The CDC provides its data over two time periods: 1981 to 1998 and 1999 to 2010.)..."

"Local law enforcement face ammo shortage as gun owners, DHS stock up"

[link to www.foxnews.com]

"Local law enforcement agencies across the country are facing an ammo shortage, as gun owners concerned about new laws at the federal and state level stock up on firearms and bullets.

At the same time, the Department of Homeland Security has said it wants to buy more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition in the next four or five years -- which could put further strain on the supply.

The shortage, coupled with an increase in prices, comes as many gun owners head to the stores in anticipation of new gun control laws. States like Colorado and New York have already approved such legislation, while Democrats move toward bringing a bill to the Senate floor. At the moment, the congressional bill does not include an assault-weapons ban, but a ban is expected to be floated as an amendment.

Still, what one official described as "panic-buying" set in, as lawmakers rallied to draft new legislation in the wake of a series of tragic mass shootings last year, from Aurora, Colo., to Oak Creek, Wis., to Newtown, Conn...."

"Gun deaths shaped by race in America"

[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

"Gun deaths are shaped by race in America. Whites are far more likely to shoot themselves, and African Americans are far more likely to be shot by someone else.

The statistical difference is dramatic, according to a Washington Post analysis of data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A white person is five times as likely to commit suicide with a gun than to be shot with a gun; for each African American who uses a gun to commit suicide, five are killed by other people with guns.

Where a person lives matters, too. Gun deaths in urban areas are much more likely to be homicides, while suicide is far and away the dominant form of gun death in rural areas. States with the most guns per capita, such as Montana and Wyoming, have the highest suicide rates; states with low gun ownership rates, such as Massachusetts and New York, have far fewer suicides per capita.

Suicides and homicides are volatile human dramas. Both acts shatter families, friends and sometimes communities. But the reactions are as different as black and white, and those differences shape the nation’s divided attitudes toward gun control.

For instance, African Americans tend to be stronger backers of tough gun controls than whites. A Washington Post-ABC News poll this month found that about three-quarters of blacks support stronger controls, compared with about half of whites. The poll also found that two-thirds of city dwellers support stronger gun controls, while only about a third of rural residents back them.

Gun homicides, especially mass shootings, tend to spark demands for change. Although suicides account for almost twice as many gun deaths as homicides nationwide, they tend to be quiet tragedies, unnoticed outside the hushed confines of family and friends.

Suicide is “absent from the discussion of gun policy,” said Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research in Baltimore. “The availability of firearms does indeed increase the risk of suicide, but most people don’t see it that way.”

Opponents of gun control counter that some countries with high gun ownership rates, such as Israel, have few suicides, and countries such as Russia, where guns are scarce, have high rates of suicide. The reasoning is that determined people can find a way to kill themselves, although suicide experts say the prevalence of guns allows for impulse suicides that otherwise might not occur.

The most ardent advocate for gun rights, the National Rifle Association, casts the link between guns and suicide as something of a virtue. “Gun owners are notably self-reliant and exhibit a willingness to take definitive action when they believe it to be in their own self-interest,” the NRA wrote in a fact sheet, called “Suicide and Firearms,” on the Web site for the group’s lobbying arm. “Such action may include ending their own life when the time is deemed appropriate.”

‘A different mindset’

"Bloomberg to Launch $12 Million National Gun Control Ad Campaign: ‘It’s Time for Another Voice’"

[link to www.theblaze.com]

"New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is set to launch a $12 million national ad campaign designed to pressure “swing senators” into voting for stricter gun control laws, the New York Times reports.

Since the assault weapons ban has, for now, taken a back seat, Bloomberg apparently plans to focus on pushing universal background checks in 13 states during an upcoming Easter Congressional recess.

The New York Times continues:

“You don’t want to lose everything in the interest of getting the perfect,” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview, acknowledging his disappointment over the apparent unlikelihood of an assault weapons ban, but insisting he is resolved to push the legislation through at a time when its prospects are uncertain.

The mayor’s advertising blitz, which will saturate television screens in states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Arizona, represents by far the biggest escalation of Mr. Bloomberg’s attempts to become a one-man counterweight to the National Rifle Association in the political clash over guns.

“The N.R.A. has just had this field to itself,” Mr. Bloomberg said. “It’s the only one that’s been speaking out. It’s time for another voice.”

After months of wrangling, the current package of Senate legislation would expand background checks for gun buyers, increase penalties for people who buy firearms for those barred from owning them and would give law enforcement new tools to combat illegal gun trafficking, a longtime goal of Mr. Bloomberg’s. [Emphasis added]..."

Guns are largely forbidden in Bermuda — even most police officers do not use them — but the mayor’s guards have special permission to carry weapons. One for the "good guys" (The 2nd Amendment)

"Obama’s favorite gun control lawyer bumped off ‘fast-track’ to Supreme Court"

[link to washingtonexaminer.com]

"Former New York Solicitor General Caitlin Halligan withdrew her nomination to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in the face of Republican opposition, thereby surrendering her spot on the “fast-track” to the Supreme Court.

“I am deeply disappointed that even after nearly two and a half years, a minority of Senators continued to block a simple up-or-down vote on her nomination,” President Obama said in a statement on Halligan’s withdrawal yesterday. “The D.C. Circuit is considered the Nation’s second-highest court, but it now has more vacancies than any other circuit court. This is unacceptable.”

The prominence of the D.C. Circuit stoked Republican opposition to Halligan’s nomination. “Everybody that’s appointed to D.C. circuit is on a fast track to the Supreme Court, so you always have to do a double-scrutiny,” a Senate Republican aide told The Washington Examiner. The withdrawal comes about two weeks after Republicans blocked a vote on her nomination, for the last time.

The GOP’s top attorney-turned-senators argued that Halligan would be a liberal activist on the bench. “She is a skilled litigator with a distinguished career, but she has repeatedly advanced extreme legal theories inconsistent with judicial restraint,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said in a March 6 statement explaining why he voted against cloture (which thus set a 60-vote threshold for Halligan’s nomination). “Whether on guns, marriage, or the legal standards applicable to alien terrorists, Ms. Halligan’s aggressive and consistent litigation agenda shows that she is not a suitable choice to serve on the critically important D.C. Circuit court....”

"Harry Reid will reverse course and allow a tough gun bill to be introduced in the Senate.

The Huffington Post reports, "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will introduce gun control legislation Thursday night that includes a proposal for universal background checks, a high-ranking source told The Huffington Post."

The liberal website adds:

"The news will cheer up gun control advocates who were left despondent days ago after Reid announced the baseline bill would not include a ban on assault weapons. That measure, which is sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), will be considered as an amendment, diminishing its chances of ending up in the final bill produced by the Senate. A provision that would ban the production and sale of high-capacity magazines will also be considered as an amendment, the source said...."

"Hunters seek to boycott Colorado over gun laws"

[link to tv.yahoo.com]

"COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Hunters across the country say they are boycotting Colorado because of recent legislation meant to curtail gun violence.

Colorado last week became the first Western state to ratchet back gun rights in response to mass shootings at a suburban Denver movie theater and an elementary school in Connecticut. Opponents warned that the gun controls would hurt hunters, especially an expansion of background-check requirements to apply to personal and online gun sales.

Republican opponents of the new background-check law said it would make criminals of hunters lending each other weapons for weekend hunting trips. In response, Democrats changed the bill to give people a 72-hour grace period to share guns without triggering background-check requirements. Republicans then said the bill would imperil weeklong hunting trips.

Gun rights advocates who said hunters would boycott Colorado in protest say they are following through on their threats.

Michael Bane, a freelance producer for The Outdoor Channel, announced he will no longer film his four shows in Colorado....

"The American people are way ahead of their political leaders, and we, the president and I, intend, and the mayors intend, to stay current with the American people."

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Senate will consider a comprehensive gun package, including universal background checks, next month. "Udall Tries to Walk Fine Line on Federal ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban Proposals"

[link to thecoloradoobserver.com]

"WASHINGTON — Governor John Hickenlooper’s remark that attempts to approve an assault-weapons ban in Colorado have been difficult highlights the tricky politics of the issue for officials elected statewide, especially for Senator Mark Udall, whose left-of-center position has exasperated allies and enemies alike.

On Sunday, five days after signing three far-reaching gun control measures into law, Hickenlooper indicated that convincing state lawmakers to vote for a prohibition on semi-automatic guns and rifles has been nettlesome. “It’s a tough sell,” the Democrat said on CNN.

At the national level, Colorado Sen. Mark Udall has gone further than Hickenlooper, backing a reinstatement of a federal ban on so-called assault weapons.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that military-style weapons don’t really have any place in our society,” Udall said in a press release only days after the Newtown massacre. ”We ought to reinstitute the assault weapons ban that served us well for ten years from 1994 to 2004.”

That ban included a sunset provision in which the legislation expired after ten years. Proposals to reinstate the controversial ban authored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.) and Colorado Democrat Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Golden) do not, and Udall has stopped short of endorsing either measure.

A Udall spokesman did not respond to two requests for comment about Feinstein’s legislation.

A Gallup poll last December on the subject showed less than majority support for an assault weapons ban. It found that 44 percent supported and 51 percent opposed “a law which would make it illegal to manufacture, sell, or possess semi-automatic guns known as assault weapons.”

David Kopel, research director at the libertarian-leaning Independence Institute, said, ”If you look at Gallup, it’s under 50 percent, and Colorado is not going to be more supportive of gun control.”

Of the nine members in the Colorado congressional delegation, Udall is left-of-center on an assault weapons ban...."

"Gun control efforts persist but public support dims"
Polls show fewer favor restrictive measures

[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"Vice President Joseph R. Biden, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other gun control advocates insisted Wednesday that both momentum and public opinion are on their side, but recent polling shows Americans turning against stricter laws as more time elapses since the Newtown shootings.

Mr. Biden rallied gun control advocates ahead of a “day of action” organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, telling supporters that bans on so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines are “just the beginning.”

“Let me say this as clearly as I can: this is just the beginning,” he said on a conference call organized by the group, which is co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “We believe that weapons of war have no place on our streets. That’s the message that retired admirals and generals have spoken to us about. The comment one of them used was if you want to learn how to use a semiautomatic weapon, join the United States military. But these are weapons of war.”

President Obama is also scheduled to host mothers, victims of gun violence, law enforcement officials and others at an event at the White House on Thursday, and Brina Milikowski of MAIG said the group has more than 140 events planned in at least 29 states.

“The most important thing we can do in the lead-up to the vote in Congress in a couple weeks is to make our voices heard,” Ms. Milikowski said. “We know that Congress is paying attention — not just to the polls and to the news, but also to grass-roots events and mobile initiatives showing overwhelming support among Americans for common-sense public safety measures.”

But despite the proclamations, White House spokesman Josh Earnest struck a much more cautious tone Wednesday, saying the mere fact that the Senate will be voting on an assault weapons ban is a step in the right direction.

“I think because of all the talk of the president and because of his aggressive advocacy of this issue, there will be a vote in the United States Senate on whether or not military-style assault weapons will be banned from the streets of this country,” Mr. Earnest said. “I think that is — that represents progress.”

Though surveys show that a sizable majority of Americans continue to support individual measures like universal background checks, a new CBS News poll shows that only 47 percent of Americans support stricter gun control laws, compared to a high of 57 percent right after the December shootings in Connecticut. Further, a CNN poll from last week showed 43 percent of Americans support “major restrictions” or a complete ban on guns — down from 52 percent in December.

National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said such numbers show people realize that “gun control is not the answer to reducing crime or trying to make sure the horrific shootings like what happened in Connecticut and Colorado don’t happen again.”

“I think they understand and they agree with the NRA that in order to reduce crime and reduce the instances of mass shootings, we need to fix our broken mental health system, we need to increase prosecutions of our violent crimes and we need to provide a blanket of security for children in our schools,” Mr. Arulanandam said.

A gradual decline in support for stricter gun laws also occurred in the wake of other recent mass shootings. According to Gallup, two-thirds of Americans supported stricter gun laws in April 1999, right after the Columbine school shootings in Colorado. By December, that number had dropped to 60 percent, and it sat at 51 percent by October 2002...."

[link to www.usnews.com]

"The districts that contain Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City ranked last in terms of federal gun law enforcement in 2012, according to a new report from Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which tracks federal data.

Federal gun crimes include illegal possession of a firearm in a school zone, illegal sale of a firearm to a juvenile, felon, or drug addict, and illegal transport of a firearm across state lines. In Chicago, the majority of gun charges last year were for firearms violations.

The districts of Eastern New York, Central California, and Northern Illinois ranked 88th, 89th and 90th, respectively, out of 90 districts, in prosecutions of federal weapons crimes per capita last year, but it wasn't always this way. All three districts fell lower on the list than they had been in years past. In 2010, for example, Chicago was 78th in federal weapons prosecutions.

These cities also have some of the nation's most restrictive gun laws, as well as the most active mayors in championing gun control. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are all members of the national Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign.

D.C., which also has tough gun laws, was in the lower half of the list in 2012, coming in at 78th. In 2011, D.C. prosecuted a higher number of gun crimes, coming in at number 49...."

Re: USA Gun Control Timeline, a social experiment...Post Sandy Hook to Present
posted a new thread today, but probably better put here. The MSM reporting today is heading way out into bizzaro land. No way this is incompetence, because the hyperbole got progressively worse as the day (3/28) went on.

POTUS did a press conference today regarding sandy hook. His level of insincerity bordered on theater. No remorse, no wisdom, just proffered anger. But he pauses, and almost smiles after every scold of the american people.

Almost like when a parent is disciplining a child for something they did not do. You do this to show other parents that they don't have be too tough on their child who actually did the act and will feel guilty enough already.

Also, the CNN reporting on the weapons used just gets more and more absurd. They have photographs of the weapons manifest from the "official" report, and they get it wrong in a progressively worse way.

This morning they said he had a SHOTGUN with two 30 round magazines. Those things dont exist, if they do, they gotta be toy like.

Then, just a few minutes ago they said he had a shotgun with two (2x) Seventy (70) round magazines. Which as a carried weapon would so worthless that not even the typical government employee rocking a Biden level I.Q. would buy them from a MIC contractor like G.E.

I am calling it. It was staged. If CNN is reporting it this way, I can not imagine what openly funded state media like MSNBC is saying. This is a clean up (disavow) operation for a false flag.
