"Poll: Obama underwater on guns, immigration, deficit"

[link to www.politico.com]

"A new CNN/ORC International poll found President Obama's overall approval rating has ticked up to 51 percent but ratings have fallen on his handling of the key issues on his agenda: immigration, guns, and the deficit.

On immigration, 44 percent approve of the way he is handling the issue, down from 51 percent in January. At the same time, disapproval has jumped to 50 percent, up from 43 percent in January.

On guns, 45 percent approve and 52 percent disapprove, the poll found. In January, 46 percent approved and 49 percent dispproved...."

"Minn. airport worker charged with stealing guns"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A worker at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has been charged with stealing shotguns, revolvers and other weapons from the checked luggage of passengers who had connections through the busy Twin Cities airport.

David Vang, 23, of St. Paul faces 11 felony counts, including 10 counts of theft of a firearm. He will be making his first court appearance April 25 in Hennepin County.

Pat Hogan, spokesman for the Metropolitan Airports Commission, said Monday that Vang was employed by a Texas firm to maintain the belt on which checked baggage traveled. Hogan said authorities learned in September that weapons were being stolen, so they set up surveillance cameras.

A review of footage showed Vang removing items from checked luggage and taking them to an unsecured employee parking ramp where his wife was waiting in a vehicle, the criminal complaint said.

Vang was arrested in October and is no longer working at the airport, Hogan said...."

"For Obama, gun control is more than just a feel-good gesture"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"For Barack Obama, like any second-term president, the most valuable political commodity is time. Every day brings Obama closer to that chilling moment of semi-irrelevance when Americans are more fixated on the 2016 elections than on the man finishing out his eight-year lease on the Oval Office.

That’s why it’s telling that Obama is flying to Connecticut on Monday afternoon for his second out-of-town gun control event in a week. This represents a level of presidential commitment that Obama has rarely displayed about other issues on the liberal wish list, like global warming. Nearly four months after the Sandy Hook shootings, it suggests that the death of 20 small children continues to sear Obama’s soul.

The presidential visit to Hartford serves as a prelude to a week when the Senate will begin debating gun legislation under the threat of a conservative GOP filibuster. But for the first time in weeks, there are glimmers of hope that the National Rifle Association (NRA) may be on the defensive in the Senate.

Pennsylvania conservative Republican Pat Toomey has been working with pro-gun West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin on compromise language mandating an expansion of background checks for gun buyers. And on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, John McCain announced that he would oppose a filibuster to prevent the Senate from voting on gun bills, depriving the Republicans of a key vote...."

Our dear leader...

"Obama slams Republicans for gun reform 'stunts' "

[link to www.france24.com]

"AFP - President Barack Obama accused Republicans of stooping to political stunts to block gun reform, in a fervent appeal delivered close to the site of the Newtown school massacre.

At a critical moment for hopes for sweeping action to stem gun violence, Obama traveled to Hartford, Connecticut, not far from Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and six adults were gunned down in December.

In sharp, impassioned remarks, he contrasted the courage of parents whose children were killed by a deranged gunman with US lawmakers he said feared the wrath of the powerful American gun lobby.

"Some folks in Washington are already floating the idea that they may use political stunts to prevent votes on any of these reforms," Obama told a raucous crowd during his second gun control rally in a week.

"They're not just saying they'll vote no on ideas that almost all Americans support. They're saying they'll do everything they can to even prevent any votes on these provisions.

"What's more important to you -- our children or an A grade from the gun lobby?"

As Congress returns from a recess, some Republicans have pledged to use Senate filibuster tactics to prevent a gun reform bill likely to be placed before lawmakers in the next few weeks from coming to a final vote.

They say a package prepared by Democratic Senate Majority leader Harry Reid would infringe the constitutional right to bear arms.

Obama has been delivered increasingly emotive calls for action -- surrounded by gun violence victims and police officers to build pressure on Republicans to relent.

The president contrasted the bravery of Nicole Hockley, mother of 6-year-old Dylan who was killed at Sandy Hook, who has become a vocal campaigner for gun control with the behavior of his political foes in Washington.

"If Nicole can summon the courage to do that -- how can the rest of us do any less?" Obama asked the 3,100 strong crowd...."

YET thinks it's A.O.K. to:
Flies families of Newtown victims on Air Force One...

"Obama, With Newtown Families, Demands Gun Control Vote"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Speaking before families of the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre, President Obama made an impassioned and urgent plea for stricter gun laws, as he accused Republicans of threatening to use "political stunts" to block reforms.

"This is not about politics. This is about doing the right thing for all the families who are here that have been torn apart by gun violence," the president told a packed crowd at the University of Hartford, just 50 miles from the site of the December shooting in Newtown, Conn. "It's about them, and all the families going forward so we can prevent this from happening again. That's what it's about."

Obama's visit to Connecticut comes at the start of a critical week, as the Senate is expected to debate the president's gun control agenda. While there are signs of agreement to expand background checks, two major parts of the president's plan, a ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, seem unlikely to pass.

In a rousing, campaign-style speech the president warned lawmakers not to use political tactics to prevent the Senate from voting on gun reform measures, arguing that they have an obligation to the victims of gun violence...."

"How the NRA won"

Most Americans support tougher gun control measures. Too bad the gun lobby has so many politicians in its pocket

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Most Americans support tougher gun control measures. Too bad the gun lobby has so many politicians in its pocket

There's no denying it: The National Rifle Association has won — again. Even though more than 3,000 Americans have died via gun violence since 20 children and 6 adults were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary in December, the NRA has somehow managed to triumph. The victims' families and gun control advocates have lost. Forget an assault weapons ban — or any other serious gun regulation. It's not happening.

The Washington Post notes that not only have the NRA's tactics cowed politicians and beaten back substantive national gun control efforts, but in some instances, they've actually led to moves to make guns easier to get. Meanwhile, at least a dozen GOP senators have signed on to Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's call to filibuster any gun control measure.

This is just one more issue where polls show Republicans at odds with mainstream America. A Morning Joe/Marist poll found six in 10 respondents — including 83 percent of Democrats, 43 percent of gun owners, and 37 percent of Republicans — believe that the laws covering gun sales should be stricter.

Here's the problem: The NRA has a lot of money, and NRA donations go overwhelmingly to Republicans. They are unsurprisingly blocking tougher gun control...."

"Women and Guns: Why Female Gun Ownership Is Rising and Why Many Are Taking Notice"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"This article is part of a series on Guns in America that explores the use of firearms in our country and the debate over gun control. This is an editorially independent series sponsored by Tactical Firearms Training Secrets."

"Many people assume that "every shooter in the United States is a 50-year-old white guy," quips Natalie Foster of the website "The Girl's Guide to Guns."

Many people are wrong.

The number of women who owned guns spiked to 23% in 2011, compared to 13% in a 2005 Gallup poll. While the organization hasn't released updated statistics yet, most think the rates will continue to rise.

But who are these women, and why are they choosing to arm themselves?

Self-Defense and Independence

The average woman is not as strong as the average man. In a hand-to-hand struggle, even if she goes to the gym five times a week, the woman is probably going to lose.

Unless she has a gun, and knows how to use it.

"There's a famous quote...[that] goes, 'God made men, but Sam Colt made [them] equal,'" Jason Hanson, a former CIA Officer and the author of "The Covert Guide to Concealed Carry," told TheBlaze. "A great example of this is when a few months back, [an] 18-year girl in Oklahoma used a shotgun to stop a home intruder who had a knife. The bottom line is, a gun is without a doubt the best way for a woman to defend herself in a worst-case scenario...."

"PoliceOne's Gun Control Survey: 11 key lessons from officers' perspectives"

[link to www.policeone.com]

"In March, PoliceOne conducted the most comprehensive survey ever of American law enforcement officers’ opinions on the topic gripping the nation's attention in recent weeks: gun control.

More than 15,000 verified law enforcement professionals took part in the survey, which aimed to bring together the thoughts and opinions of the only professional group devoted to limiting and defeating gun violence as part of their sworn responsibility.

Totaling just shy of 30 questions, the survey allowed officers across the United States to share their perspectives on issues spanning from gun control and gun violence to gun rights.

Top Line Takeaways
Breaking down the results, it's important to note that 70 percent of respondents are field-level law enforcers — those who are face-to-face in the fight against violent crime on a daily basis — not office-bound, non-sworn administrators or perpetually-campaigning elected officials....

Thread: CONN. FATHER’S STUNNING CLAIM: SON’S SCHOOL IS TEACHING THAT AMERICANS DON’T HAVE THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS

"A Connecticut father is accusing his son’s school district of teaching children that Americans do not have a constitutional right to bear arms. Steven Boibeaux of Bristol, Connecticut, is claiming that his child, an eighth-grader at Northeast Middle School, was given a social studies worksheet that is anti-Second Amendment in nature — or, at the least, opposed to the conservative view of the provision.

In an interview with Fox News’ Todd Starnes, Boibeaux said that he’s “appalled” and that the school seems to be “trying to indoctrinate our kids.” The worksheet in question, published by Instructional Fair, is entitled, “The Second Amendment Today,” and it allegedly proclaims that American citizens do not have the right to guns.

“The courts have consistently determined that the Second Amendment does not ensure each individual the right to bear arms,” it purportedly reads. “The courts have never found a law regulating the private ownership of weapons unconstitutional....”

"Obama's Army Outmaneuvered by NRA"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Although the first votes on gun -control legislation have yet to be cast, by some measures the National Rifle Association has already won.

Obama’s ambitious plans to ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities are off the table, while the NRA suggested it could support the most likely outcome -- expanded background checks -- as recently as 1999. The NRA claims that the president’s efforts have triggered a fundraising surge and boosted its membership from 4 million to nearly 5 million. Members of Congress who seemed open to legislation after the shooting deaths of 20 Connecticut schoolchildren are still on the fence, while Republicans are threatening a filibuster.

Perhaps a battle pitting one of the oldest and most aggressive lobbying organizations against President Obama’s fledgling advocacy shop wasn’t a fair fight.

Yet by other measures, the newly created Organizing for Action is persevering in the first major battle over gun control in two decades. By partnering with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s well-financed group, Organizing for Action is building the strongest gun-control coalition ever seen in this country. The group also has public opinion on its side, with one Quinnipiac University survey finding 91 percent of voters support background checks.

“It’s a fascinating battle in which both sides have different goals,” said former Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who boasts of several NRA endorsements during his political career. “The NRA is clearly succeeding in cranking up their base and expanding it. Their game is as much about keeping themselves in business as it is about public policy.”

As for Obama, “He is winning the hearts and minds of the American people and hopefully moving real legislation,” Dean said. “The president comes out as a winner either way because if the Republicans kill it, he can use it as an issue in 2014 to help Democrats win the House....”

"Son of slain DA says guns put away before killing"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WORTHAM, Texas (AP) — Slain Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland kept a gun "in every room of his house" but couldn't reach one when his killer or killers came into his home Easter weekend because he had put the weapons away just hours before to protect visitors, his son said in an interview published Tuesday.

"They had a party the night before and he gathered up all his guns and put them away in a bag so that his guests didn't stumble across them," J.R. McLelland told The Dallas Morning News ( [link to dallasne.ws] ).

J.R. McLelland and his sister, Krista Ball, told the newspaper they learned about the party after the fact from another family member and had no details.

Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia were found shot to death March 30. The slayings occurred two months after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was gunned down outside the county courthouse.

No arrests have been made in either case.

J.R. McLelland said he believes that, had the weapons been in their normal spots, his father likely would have tried to reach one of several he kept in the living room. That's where Cynthia McLelland's body was found.

"He kept a gun by every chair," J.R. McLelland said. "He kept one on both sides of the TV, there was a shotgun hanging on the back of the couch and two by his bed...."

"Harry Reid announced today that there will likely be a gun vote on Thursday.

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) likely has the votes on gun control legislation to clear its first procedural hurdle -- a victory for the gun control community, though one that hardly guarantees the bill's passage," reports the Huffington Post.

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate will cast its first vote this week on President Barack Obama's proposals to curb gun violence, which face a rough ride in Congress due to opposition from Republicans and gun rights activists.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid scheduled a procedural vote for Thursday to open debate on gun control and Democratic aides said they expect to defeat Republican efforts to block the bill from reaching the Senate floor.

But even if the Democrats win that skirmish, the administration is struggling to gain support from lawmakers for Obama's proposals to expand background checks for gun buyers and ban assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in the face of a campaign by the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby.

Gun-control supporters cranked up pressure on lawmakers on Tuesday, with relatives of children killed in the Newtown school massacre in December meeting with senators in Washington...."

"Biden Slams Lawmakers Threatening to Filibuster Gun Control Bill"

[link to gma.yahoo.com]

"WASHINGTON - With President Obama's gun-control agenda in jeopardy, Vice President Joe Biden today said it is "mind-boggling" that lawmakers would try to block debate on a gun bill and delivered an emotional call to action.

Just hours after meeting privately with families of the victims of the Newtown, Conn., massacre, Biden said lawmakers threatening to filibuster gun legislation have lost sight of the pain of these parents.

"Why don't people up there understand this? I mean, what has to happen to break through the consciousness of the people up on the Hill?" he asked.

Speaking to law enforcement officials at the White House, Biden said he wished members of Congress had been able to "eavesdrop" on his discussion with the parents of children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and six adults were killed in a shooting in December.

"[The families] don't understand how we could even be at this point debating this," he said. "The truth is, they don't see how 100 bright women and men don't get it."

More than a dozen Republicans are threatening to block a vote on the bill...."

"Showdown Day: Senate to Vote on Gun Control Amid GOP Threats"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Thursday is showdown day in the Senate over gun control legislation, with the Democratic leadership promising to move forward in a bid to overcome GOP objections.

"We are going to vote Thursday," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said today. "It will be real slap in the face to American people not to do something on background checks, on school safety, on federal trafficking -everybody thinks it's a good idea."

Reid will file cloture on the bill tonight, setting up a Thursday showdown vote. The vote will not be on the overall legislation. It will be a procedural vote on the "motion to proceed" - aka, move to the bill. Republicans have threatened to filibuster the procedural vote, in essence standing in the way of the bill moving forward toward an up or down vote.

The bill needs 60 votes in order to override the Republican filibuster.

When asked if he has the votes he needs Reid answered, "I don't know...."

[link to www.campusreform.org]

"A professor at a public university in Texas is under investigation from school administrators for allegedly forcing students in her graphic design class to create anti-gun posters for a personal anti-gun campaign she had launched.

Midwestern State University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Betty Stewart confirmed to Campus Reform Friday the school has launched an investigation into professor Jennifer Yucus’ conduct after a student filed an official complaint on Thursday.

According to the complaint, obtained by Campus Reform, the professor compelled students in her graphic design class to create artwork opposing firearms on campus and opposing pro-gun legislation currently pending before the Texas state legislature.

The professor then used the artwork students created online to publicize an anti-gun petition entitled “MSU is anti-Concealed Carry on Campus” and on a now deleted Facebook page opposing firearms, says the complaint...."

We now have a list of the first Senator's who should be targeted when they are up for re-election...

"Senators reach deal on background checks"

[link to www.politico.com]

"Sens. Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey will unveil a bipartisan deal to expand background checks for commercial gun sales at a news conference Wednesday morning, opening a pathway for the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in nearly two decades.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has been closely involved in the gun talks, called Mark Kelly, husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), on Wednesday morning to inform them he had signed off on the agreement, according to a Senate aide.

This came after Schumer negotiated several changes to the initial Manchin-Toomey proposal. Giffords was seriously wounded in a Jan. 2011 shooting that left six other people dead. Giffords resigned from Congress the next year, and she and Kelly — a former astronaut — have becoming leading gun-control advocates.

Schumer also spoke to Vice President Joe Biden and New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg to give them details of agreement and his support for it.

The agreement could give political cover for enough Republicans to vote Thursday and exceed the 60-vote requirement needed to allow the Senate to proceed to what would be an emotional floor debate on gun control legislation. That debate could last one to two weeks before a final vote, said Senate aides.

The changes proposed by Schumer included striking language from the agreement allowing concealed permit holders to carry their weapons in other states, and limiting Internet sales to five guns per year.

Schumer also worked to make sure there is a 72-hour window for performing background checks except for gun-show sales, which will be cleared in 48 hours initially.

The Manchin-Toomey agreement would close the so-called “gun show loophole”, requiring that background checks are conducted on all commercial gun sales in the country, according to a fact sheet of the bill obtained by POLITICO from a representative of one of the gun control groups involved in the talks.

When a sale occurs, the buyer and seller would meet at a federally licensed dealer, who would conduct the check.

According to the fact sheet, the dealer - not the government - will keep control of the sales record, as has been the process for the last four decades.

It would be a felony to sell a gun without a background check to a prohibited buyer or police officer...."

"Law enforcement says gun restrictions are ineffective: Survey"

[link to www.washingtontimes.com]

"A national survey of law enforcement shows officers believe many proposed gun control measures — including bans on assault weapons — will be ineffective at reducing violent crime and that legal gun ownership by private citizens would prove a better safeguard.

Among the findings of a survey by the industry website PoliceOne, which tallied responses from 15,000 verified active and retired law enforcement professionals, police overwhelmingly favor an armed citizenry and are skeptical of any greater restrictions placed on gun purchase, ownership or accessibility, editor Doug Wyllie said.

The survey found that 91.5 percent of respondents believe a federal ban on the manufacture or sale of semi-automatic weapons would have no effect or a negative effect on the reduction of violent crime. Though a national assault weapons ban is dead in the water, numerous states — including Maryland, Connecticut and New York — have adopted or enhanced their own bans.

The vast majority of officers also believe legally armed citizens are important in the reduction of crime rates.

“It’s my analysis that by and large law enforcement officers favor enforcement of current laws and enforcement against illegal guns,” Mr. Wyllie said. “They also favor responsible, armed citizens in the midst of other civilians out there to help protect innocents from harm.”

Release of the survey, conducted March 4-13, comes at a time politicians in Congress and around the country are pushing for stricter gun restrictions in the name of public safety. The Senate is scheduled Thursday to take up gun legislation that would expand the types of gun sales subject to background checks, and impose new penalties on gun traffickers and straw purchasers — those who buy guns to transfer them to people who can’t legally own them.

Vice President Joseph R. Biden and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. addressed an audience of law enforcement officers from around the country at the White House in support of the administration’s gun control measures. But the survey results, issued Monday, indicate a strong undercurrent in the public safety community that is critical of additional gun restrictions.

When asked what would help most in preventing a large-scale public shooting, the majority of respondents, 28.8 percent, favor more permissive concealed-carry policies for civilians. The second most popular answer, with 19.6 percent, was that more aggressive institutionalization for mentally ill persons would prevent a large-scale shooting, followed by 15.8 percent who believed more armed security would prevent such a tragedy.

Less than 1 percent of respondents believed that further restrictions on assault weapons and ammunition magazines would prevent a large-scale shooting.

When asked what impact a legally armed citizen could have had in a mass shooting such as the school shooting in Newtown, Conn. or movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., a whopping 80 percent believed casualties would have been reduced while another 6.2 percent thought casualties would have been avoided altogether...."

"The Case Against Gun Background Checks"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"With the fate of gun control as muddled as ever, the best hope for congressional compromise centers on the most popular policy move Washington could make: universal background checks.

The public supports other measures, but among all the limits on gun ownership that Democrats have advanced since the December shooting in Newtown, Conn., background checks enjoy the most support.

A Quinnipiac University poll last week showed 91 percent of respondents in favor of "requiring background checks for all gun buyers," compared with slimmer margins, 59 percent and 58 percent, for banning "assault weapons" and magazines that hold more than 10 bullets, respectively.

To many, the idea of preventing criminals from buying guns seems like a no-brainer, regardless of whether they're stopped at gun stores, as current background checks have successfully done, or at gun shows or from private sellers, where background checks aren't required. Still, Congress is hung up.

Some Republicans have balked at universal background checks. The National Rifle Association opposes them. Why?

Here are a few arguments that have been offered up against the most popular move Congress could make on gun control. Underpinning most of the arguments is a similar idea, usually from conservatives: that universal background checks aren't worth an expansion of government power..."

"Giffords, Kelly own guns while pushing gun control"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, keep pushing for stricter gun laws as they continue to own weapons for recreational purposes, including the same type of gun used in the January 2011 shooting rampage that left Giffords wounded.

However, the couple's 9 mm Glock holds fewer bullets than the one used the Tucson shooting spree. Limiting the size of ammunition magazines is one of the goals of a new political action committee formed by Giffords and Kelly.

The couple was interviewed in Tucson by CNN for a segment that aired Tuesday evening.

Kelly was shown shooting pots and water bottles off large rocks in a desert area with Giffords watching from a porch.

For target practice, Kelly said he uses a 9 mm Glock with a magazine that can hold 17 rounds. That's the same kind of handgun that Jared Lee Loughner used when he opened fire outside a Tucson supermarket during a meet-and-greet event organized by Giffords. The shooting injured Giffords and 12 others and left six people dead.

"In that case, it had a magazine that held 33 rounds," Kelly said. "He shot 33 rounds. Every round hit somebody, we think...."

"Gun Manufacturer Will Leave Connecticut Over Gun Control Legislation: ‘A Call to All Involved in Our Industry to Leave This State’

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"BRISTOL (TheBlaze/AP -- A Connecticut gun-maker has announced Wednesday it intends to leave the state following the passage of gun control legislation it says tramples on the rights of citizens and does not show enough consideration for the industry.

Bristol-based PTR says in a statement posted on its website that it has not decided where it will move, but it has commitments from most employees to relocate. The company makes military-style rifles and employs more than 40 people.

PTR Vice President John McNamara said Wednesday that it expects to make a more formal announcement about a move within six weeks. The company encouraged other gun manufacturers to follow suit

"We feel that our industry as a whole will continue to be threatened so long as it remains in a state where its elected leaders have no regard for the rights of those who produce and manufacture its wealth," the statement reads.

"We are making a call to all involved in our industry to leave this state, close your doors and show our politicians the true consequences of their hasty and uninformed actions. We encourage those in our industry to abandon this state as its leaders have abandoned the proud heritage that forged our freedom."

Several Connecticut gun manufacturers have indicated they are thinking about moving after Gov. Dannel P. Malloy last week signed the law imposing new restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines. The state's new laws have been heralded by Malloy as the toughest in the nation...."

"Sen. Lee: Backgound Checks Could Allow Holder to Create Gun Registry Using Regulations"

[link to cnsnews.com]

"On Wednesday, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) took to the Senate floor and warned that universal background checks could lead to a national registry system for guns.

"Some of the proposals, like for example- universal background checks- would allow the federal government to surveil law-abiding citizens who exercise their Constitutional rights. One of the provisions we expect to see in the bill based on what we saw in the Judiciary Committee- on which I sit- would allow the Attorney General of the United States (Eric Holder) to promulgate regulations that could lead to a national registry system for guns. Something my constituents in Utah are very concerned about, and understandably so," said Sen. Lee...."

"Michelle Obama on gun control: ‘These reforms deserve a vote’"

[link to www.washingtonpost.com]

"CHICAGO — First lady Michelle Obama, with tears in her eyes and her voice cracking, spoke out for the first time here Wednesday about the gun violence afflicting young people in cities across the nation.

She took a rare step for any first lady into the legislative fight of the hour, saying her husband, President Obama, is “fighting as hard as he can, and engaging as many people as he can, to pass common-sense reforms to protect our children from gun violence.”

“These reforms deserve a vote in Congress,” she said, drawing loud applause from hundreds of Chicago’s business executives and civic leaders who were gathered at a luncheon to raise money for a new anti-violence initiative.

Obama spoke emotionally about attending the funeral in February of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old majorette who was shot in a city park not far from the Obamas’ Chicago house and just days after visiting Washington for President Obama’s inauguration ceremonies...."

"Dozens rally for stricter gun laws in Austin"

[link to www.khou.com]

"AUSTIN, Texas - A rally for tougher gun laws becomes a heated debate when gun rights advocates decided to bring a message of their own on the south side of the Capitol.

The organizers of the Texas Rally for Gun Sense say they're not against law abiding gun owners.

They say they're fighting for universal background checks and they want to limit assault weapons and high capacity magazines. They also oppose putting any guns on a school campus.

Among the speakers at the rally were people who's lives have been touched by gun violence.

"She could have fought him off, she would have won if he hadn't had the gun," said Judy Johnson, the sister of a gun violence victim.

Organizer say after devastating shootings in Connecticut, Colorado and Oregon last year something has to change.

"I've never been so deeply touched as I was after Sandy Hook and that day was a turning point for me," said Hilary Rand with Moms Demand Action. "I used to just be a mom. Now I'm a mom and an activist."

When a couple of gun rights activists showed up at the event, the crowd rushed to the front to block their signs from media and the crowd. Police had to step in for crowd control as speakers took the stage and the confrontation heated up...."

"Activist Actually Gets People to Sign Fake Petition Calling for Full Repeal of Second Amendment and Door-to-Door Gun Confiscation"

[link to news.yahoo.com]

"Have you ever wondered how many average Americans would actually sign a petition calling for a full repeal of the Second Amendment and door-to-door gun confiscation?

Well, you're in luck. Mark Dice, a political activist, recently took to the streets to see how many people he could get to sign such a petition. Surprisingly, more than a few provided their signature to the cause.

"We're just gonna repeal the Second Amendment and take the guns away form the crazy right-wing, white extremists," Dice tells a man as he's signing the petition. "And just make sure that only the illegal unregistered guns stay on the street."

He tells another man that by repealing the Second Amendment, the country can have a "door-to-door gun confiscation against the white people, the right-wing extremists." The man, who is holding a baby, replies "OK."...

"Highway patrol gave feds Missouri weapon permits data"

[link to www.columbiatribune.com]

"JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri’s database of concealed weapon permits was twice given to federal authorities investigating Social Security disability fraud in a move that has enraged lawmakers already angry over potential abuses in a new driver’s licensing system.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Col. Ron Replogle was questioned for nearly an hour this morning by the Senate Appropriations Committee after he revealed to Chairman Kurt Schaefer yesterday that his agency had turned over the data.

The delivery of the information to federal authorities has become a huge issue for lawmakers since they began raising questions about new driver’s licensing procedures. A lawsuit from Stoddard County challenged the procedures that require all supporting documents — including certificates granting concealed weapon privileges — to be scanned and retained.

In November 2011 and again in January, Replogle said, an agent of the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General received discs with the data. Each time, the agent was unable to read the encryption format and destroyed the discs, Replogle said.

“They said no names were retrieved,” Replogle told the committee this morning. “They do not have those names. They did not disseminate that information, and all that information has been destroyed. We have asked for that documentation of what has happened.”

The data was turned over because the Office of Inspector General is a law enforcement agency, Replogle said. It was done by a mid-level supervisor at the patrol. Replogle said he was not informed of the transfer until four weeks ago..."

"Joe Biden: ‘Having Guns Is Like Driving A Ferrari’ [Video]"

[link to www.inquisitr.com]

"Vice President Joe Biden stopped by MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday to talk about gun control, and said that he believes that many Americans own guns because they like the feel of owning guns. To them, Biden says, it’s like “driving a Ferrari.”

Biden has strangely become the Obama Administration’s key point man on gun control, one of the nation’s biggest and most difficult issues of late. We say “strangely,” because he’s kind of a risky guy to put in front of such a crucial issue. His reputation as a “gaffe machine” can make him difficult for most Americans to take seriously.

His argument on Morning Joe was a familiar one, commenting that gun control opponents have been busy spreading “disinformation” and “paranoia” on the issue, and opining that some Americans only cling to their guns because they like how it “feels.”

“This is one of the cases where the public is so far ahead of the elected officials, I mean so far ahead,” Biden argued. “You saw it in immigration, you saw it in marriage issues, you’re seeing it now. The public has moved to a different place.”
