The people who have paid into this social security program for most of their lives knows it is no free handout. But a pension program paid into it for our retirement. Stop letting on like we are not entitled to our own money!

Most people on this board are never going to see any money from SS. Everyone on here advocating SS have no idea that is underfunded by TRILLIONS of dollars. With an exploding retirement rate we have less people paying into it and more people taking the entitlement. So people paid into it their whole life but for the last few decades those retires got way more than they ever paid in. This whole thing is a Ponzi Scheme and Ponzi Schemes by definition will not last. This thing is going to blow up in everyone's faces.

$Trillions wasted on wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, etc. US military bases in over 100 countries. Thousands of troops still stationed in Europe, Japan, Afghan, etc. Dept of War budget can easily be cut by 25%.

And when the fighting gets good who will be fighting? Yea. Sucks.

Social security is an entitlement. How can some of you not get that. You paid in a whole lot less than you have pulled out. And you are still on the dole pulling more out. Go ahead and calculate it. I will wait.... We, the working are supporting your laziness. This has to STOP.

Social security, unemployment, medicare, disability, etc. are all entitlement programs. You think what you paid in is less than what you have taken out? Get real. Even if you include interest, it is NOT EVEN CLOSE.

These entitlement programs need to stop. NOW.

You are living off the working. Go get help from your family, food banks, charity services, etc.

I don't know where the first AC gets his history, but those "prosperous" times were no different from these "prosperous" times. In other words, lots of people had 4-6 kids back then, lots worked in factories or as waitresses, and made minimum wage or just a bit more. Lots DID work 60 hours a week, a full time job and a part time job. Do you think they were somehow immune to having kids, paying for education, clothes, illnesses, rent/mortgage, insurances, emergency repairs, the same things you pay for now?

Like many people now, they didn't have a dime left to save for a rainy day. Things were not cushy for everyone, I really don't know who you are talking about. You must live in some rich social strata? People I know worked in dime stores, hospital clerks, secretaries, car washes, I mean they weren't all big income CEOs. Where are you seeing all these rich old people? Walk around some other neighborhoods and tell me what you see.

And ALL of them paid into social security, whether they wanted to or not, it was mandatory. And ALL of them were told what a good thing it was, because when they retired at age 62, they would start getting it back. YOU ARE NOT PAYING FOR THEM, THEY PAID FOR THEMSELVES. Why is it you don't get that? Why do you lump SS payments in with welfare and food stamps? They are completely different premises.

But then they raised the retirement age, and are talking about raising it to 70. Each time they raise it, if you retire before that age, you get reduced benefits. AAnd then the promises made, which people believed in good faith, get whittled down year by year, so that the money you were forced to pay in is never really returned to you for those "golden years" (who coined THAT phrase?) I know people who are not going to be able to retire until they are 75. Do you know anyone like that? From the way you talk, I doubt it. But I do.

I have a hard time understanding how you lump "all old people" into one category, then have the gall to judge them and make a pronouncement that they should "deal with being sick and poor" if they are unlucky enough to have survived their children or simply don't have relatives able to take them in. I thought I would just mention that SS, if it had been left as it was intended, would still be over funded. That means that we could have reduced the retirement age to 55 by now, and be able to pay about 35k for fully funded retirees. But the Congress in its infinite and far sighted wisdom, allowed the fund to be incorporated into the general budget, the retirement age increased, and the benefits to shrink. Its Congress that makes the laws. They create the fiscal problems that we now face by spending our tax money on programs that earn them votes. Gee why can't everybody see that. Dems have given our tax money to those who have not earned a place in our society by entitling them with certain rights ( read as payments) Fund programs for "disadvantaged people" , given money to special interest groups, despite funding a campaign to promote equality. And the big killer has been to promote the idea that everyone deserves a home, a loan, whether they can pay for it or not. All the while doing nothing but encouraging the jobs to be sent over seas. No jobs= no money, no money = foreclosure, foreclosure =banks in trouble, banks in trouble = bale-out. bale-out = borrow more money from china cause we are sending trillions of tax dollars overseas to fund economic and military aid to who( Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iraq,Afghanistan, Jordan, Pakistan, Sudan,Ethiopia, etc etc etc.) They have not mentioned cutting one dollar of foreign spending, yet want to call for cuts to SS as an entitlement. But do not touch welfare, breakfast/lunches for illegal immigrants, housing developments to get people out of public housing,etc, give me a fucking break.

That's BS, actually you pull out LESS than what you put in because under real inflation rates your money loses about 15 percent value a year. So you actually do not get ANYTHING from the first years that you paid into SS over the course of a long working life until you retire. That money you paid in has been stolen by inflation.

SS ought to use their heads in this business of "cuts".

For people who are paying taxes on substantial investment income, they should have their SS cut by a substantial margin. When they cross the 200k per year income level (exclusive of SS) then their SS benefits should be discontinued (adjusted for inflation and cost of living, etc. as all long term benefit structure should be.)

HOWEVER, the people who have no other income save for SS should be guaranteed a "boost" up to the average income for a single person in their area. If SS is all the have, then it should be enough to allow them to live iwth some shred of dignity and not be forced to eat dog food, etc.

There are MANY wealthy people (including quite a few congressmen and senators who collect SS benefits on top of their substantial salaries. that's absurd. If they don't need it, take it away from them and give it to those who do not have the huge private investment money , etc.

It still balances well in the favor of the government considering all those who paid in who died before reaching retirement age; like my father, my 2 Grand fathers, both Grandmothers, and many other relatives.

The reason these a-hole hate social security is because the business matches the taxes you pay into the system.

So if i had to guess why the remove ss is being pushed so hard is because business's dont like to pay the tax.

From my personal ss payments and company's matching over the years i have paid in about 80k.

$40k of personal money and 40k the company's have paid.

Its all about business and profit. its not a handout . you will never get the money back you paid in. But they have many people that are getting ss disability insurance that didnt ever work .
