Just Got My Ass Chewed Out At Laundry Mat For Giving A Black Girl Some Change | |
Aman User ID: 18120924 United States 12/24/2012 03:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was minding my own business putting clothes in a dryer, when a young black girl approached me and asked if she could have a dollar for the bus. Normally, I don't make a habit out of giving money to strangers because I am asked too often and would be broke if I gave to everyone that asked. But it is Christmas Eve and she really looked like she needed it. So I gave her two dollars worth of quarters and wished her good luck. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27747263 Then this hispanic older man asked me if I knew "how bad the economy was?" I replied that yes, I was well aware. And then he proceeded to chew me out for giving the girl money. He said I was part of the problem and he was talking really loudly so everyone could hear. I just rolled my eyes and laughed and turned around to finished putting quarters in the machine. The girl who asked for the money somehow heard this and started saying something to the man, then he began to yell at her telling her that she was probably on welfare and had babies at home she couldn't take care of. Then they yelled some other stuff I couldn't make out to each other. Before I left, I made sure to wish the man a Merry Christmas. Me and the girl both made our way out the front door and she looked extremely upset. I told her not to worry about it and some people were just scrooges. She looked like she was going to cry. I felt sorry for her. Maybe I am part of the problem by giving change when I feel compelled to. But I certainly would hate to live in a world where no one helped anyone else ever. I think we need to help when we feel compelled. And on this Christmas Eve I felt compelled. Fuck Mr. Scrooge. the problem is that people even begin to think that helping anyone would be a questionable thing to do; as if the girl begging for a dollar is the problem,or the one answering a request! the problem is people not giving when asked regardless of pre-conceived notions, sterotypes, and such things the like. we have been conditioned to ignore them, hate them, revile, them; some get beat, drinks thrown at them, spit hurled into their faces, governments casting them out like so mush trash. we have been conditioned to be selfish. the poor and destitute, the beggars, the homeless are not the issue for it is us as a people. our hearts are cold and unforgiving, we hate instead of love, scorn instead of giving that requested. we need to give more to those in need without judgment. give a dollar to a wino? no, give five. someone ask you for bus fair, buy it. do what is right and do so in righteousness without judging the situation. don't give unto burden of yourselves though; if you have it when asked give with a gracious and generous heart. |

They tend to be ugly and barely even capable of begging. Some people really are missing legs, rather than just pretending, I have to look carefully to be sure before giving money in such cases. Once I gave to a guy because he showed me he had a long criminal record that was keeping him from getting work. From the sound of it, I would not have given to the girl in the laundromat, she sounds too well off or capable of finding other support. I'm not saying I am right or this is the right way, this is just how I do it. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 27747263 United States 12/24/2012 03:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Your thread post is ironic for me; I gave a white man money to get on the bus, a few months ago. I had to go pay my car insurance and when I was getting back into my car in the company's parking lot, he walked over to me and said he was short on change for the bus and asked, very politely, if I could spare some. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10164827 I gave him all the money I had in my pocket at the time, which was about seven dollars, and some coins. A month ago, a white woman rolled up beside me at the gas station and literally begged me to give her some money for gas. She said she had lost her job (downsized out) and had spent her last dime on food, and her tank was on E. I had watched her asked a white man for money before she approached me, and he gave her an impatient look, shook his head no, and drove off. Funny thing was, she didn't look like your typical "beggar"; she was clean and slightly dishevled, but she looked weary. She had a Jersey accent too, which was the first thing I actually noticed (I live in Atlanta). I told her I wouldn't give her the money, but I would pay for the gas for her, and she looked SO relieved! I felt so sorry for her. The two gas clerks inside (they were from Ethiopia) saw the whole exchange and one was shocked that I put $25 gas in the woman's car because I didn't know her. I wish I could have bought more for her, but unfortunately I live on a tight budget myself, and was buying twenty-five bucks worth of gas for my own car at the time. AND, just recently, I was coming off the highway and saw a black man standing on the side of the road, holding a sign that read: I'm hungry. Please help. So I picked him up, drove to my bank, and withdrew $100 and gave it to him. (I know, I probably shouldn't have let him get into my car, but he looked too tired to do anything but sit there, which is wxactly what he did.)And he was so thankful. After I dropped him off, I cried all the way home... Trust me: Doing things for others in need ALWAYS returns to you. I'm living proof of that. And good for you. I'm a black lady and I say thank you for helping her. Wow, that is pretty awesome. Like I said, if we all gave, the world would be a much better place. My guess is that there are more poor and destitute people due to the economy rather than being lazy or addicted to drugs/alcohol. Many people are poor for many reasons. We have to keep that in mind. Either way, all those people need help in some way or another. If you can help or feel like helping even the tiniest bit, I think it is the right thing to do. Just think, it could always be you someday. That's how I look at it. |
