We have our own well with hand pump capability.

A fish pond might be nice. We have enough space we could easily have one.

Guy up the road has an old one, long time.
It's balanced.
He never has to throw any food in there.
The thing is self-sustaining.

The guy on the property next to us used to have one.
He made the mistake of putting cats in there.
They burrowed under the driveway; it started collapsing.
He filled it.

I actually like beans. And rice.

For rice, 50/50 white/brown is my fav.

There there are red beans.

I make up red beans and rice.

A stainless steel pressure cooker will help you conserve on fuel energy: cooks a pot of beans in much less time. Much.

Everybody should already be practiced in doing basics like beans and rice, already know how to come up with something hearty and tasty.

For those who think they are going to, "make it," bugging out from the city to the hinterlands, reality will be harsh.

Best to engineer, if at all possible, a move to something that could sustain you.
Even there it will be no picnic.
Even in the country there are people that are short sighted that think a gun is all they really need.... to take from someone else.

I've heard some of them talk just so.

We have sheds.

With all the hand tools we would need.
We have the power/gas goodies as well for regular times.

But hand tools, and ability to maintain and use, a must.

Then there are medical needs.
Basic kit/meds.
Be ready to sew something up if need be.

And knowledge of plants in the area. What for what purpose.

City dwellers should start by identifying what is in their area, plant-wise. Many would be surprised.
I did this exercise in the 70s in the Los Angeles area.
Great carob pods from trees on Hawthorne Blvd.
I could make a salad from green things I found walking along.
Rose hips added to that salad for vitamin c.

Start where you are at, even if in the city, to get in the swing of things.

Learn to make your own bread. Here is a short video on how to make a 5 minute, no-knead bread that I've made a number of times and we love it:

Here's a few tips I've learned by trial & error:

1.) Don't expect much the first few batches you make. By the 3rd or 4th batch you should start to taste a big improvement.

2.) I highly suggest adding a tablespoon of honey. This ingredient is not in the video but IMO it makes or breaks the bread.

The cost is about 50 cents a loaf. Not bad for something without all the additives you get in your store bought brands.

All purpose flour will last about a year at room temperature as long as it's in a sealed container. Longer if the Temp's are lower.

To really appreciate your freshly baked bread, be sure to have some jelly/jams ready after the bread has been out of the oven for 5 minutes. Mmmmmm-Mmmmmm-MMM!

Yep.

I make my own breads.

Started by hand.

Have a bread maker for convenience now.

But started by hand.
And from time to time do something by hand.
I keep in practice just because.

Flat breads as well in a pan.

Tortillas. Flour and corn.

Variety is nice.

Friend keeps bees. Raw honey. Best.

On reading Clydex' great statements...

I have been a prepper for 40 years. It is a lifestyle. No one can cover all the details in a post like this, but details like the above are must know info.

Another thing to think about is the needed cooking equipment for rough times. Your little pots and pans are not going to suffice for hardship food prep. It is not just boil water and pour into the pouch.

The long term means pots of soup, or stew, or beans or beans & rice for your family and maybe a few new assimilated members who will join you for protection and survival.

Go to a restaurant supply shop (or Craig’s list) and get a couple of LARGE cooking pots with lids. Get several sizes so some can be cooking while some is getting eaten and the beans for tomorrow are soaking.

Walk around and see the storage containers, the soup ladles, the big wooden spoons, the tubs you can use to clean and carry foods and the pans for baking. Having these things put aside safe and protected for the special day will make life a lot easier. A big bowl for kneading bread makes that easier.

I have a tall stack of restaurant bowls that are easy to clean and all the same size. It makes everyone feel equal and part of the group.

With all the new heavier work the family will be learning to do, eating well from scratch meals will bolster the heart and spirit as well as the strength.

Do not forget the "Stone Soup" of legend. Not everyone will have a lot, but everyone bringing a little to the pot will have everyone fed and cheerful.

So think of the details of food prep. Not just the food but how to cook it, mix it and share it around.coffee4

Excellent posts.

Regarding food/preps:

1/3 kept @ home
1/3 at closest bug-out site (could be relatives, etc)
1/3 at 'undisclosed' (private) locale (storage)

Techniques:

Strong duffle bags/backpacks from goodwills:

Pack EACH bag with combination of these several essentials
(as opposed to having one bag for water, one bag for clothes, one bag for food):

Bag 1: (water/food/meds/candy/blankets/clothes/flashlight
matches/candles/change/map/mres/ etc.)

Bag 2: Repeat (add on as needed)

Keep one bug-out bag in trunk of auto (extra walking shoes; coat; mres; beverages; zero degree super light weight sleeping bag; change; contact list in case cell phone goes out)

Store 5 gal gasoline (or more) in secure locale.

If 'stuck' somewhere the rules are:

SHELTER IN PLACE: (bug out bag in vehicle)
WARMTH: ^ ^ ^

For "ladies" who go 'out' whether to pubs/clubs/bars:

NEVER EVER GET DRESSED UP WITH HIGH HEELS INADEQUATE CLOTHES FOR 'UNEXPECTED' CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE YOU HAVE TO WALK LONG DISTANCE:

Bug Out Bag In Your Trunk (or your friend's car)

Dark clothes, Dark Hoodies, Tennis Shoes
(to blend in --any-- environment)

I took a gun toting-know it all-braggart turkey hunting with me this year. He missed 4 easy targets and was amazed on how difficult it was (not so for me)
When we got home, I took him to the back yard, through my turkey up on the table, gave him a knife, and said:" pretend this was your bird. Clean it, cook it. Then come get me for dinner (I've cooked wild game, fish, pig, etc. For him for years)

WHAT A MESS!!!! He had know clue on how to prep ANYTHING.

If you plan on feeding on wild life, you'd better know how to clean and cook em.

Why all the fear mongering?

The Government has plenty of food stocked for the population during an emergency. Plus they have been storing ammunition so as to protect us.

Re: You can only survive 3 Weeks without it, start storing food, NOW!!!
I like you can see what is coming for us. Just the hint of a gun grab sold out every gun and ammo store in america within days.

Americans bought over 12 billion rounds of ammo last year.
We already have over 300 million guns in our hands.
We are the largest armed population on the planet.

How many Americans have months of food stored?

Survival can be broken down into the rule of 3's
You can only survive....
3 SECONDS without HOPE,

3 MINUTES without AIR,
3 HOURS without SHELTER,
3 DAYS without WATER,
3 WEEKS without FOOD,
3 MONTHS without LOVE...

Anyone who studies military tactics knows the first thing you do to win a war is stop the distribution and flow of food to its population..

I am here to tell you it's not going to be lack of bullets that kill most of us, its going to be a lack of food.

For very little money you can store away months of essential food items that will be very valuable for you and your loved ones in the coming years. Properly stored items placed in Mylar bags with Oxygen absorbers can extend the shelf life of certain foods to well over 50 years, some say forever.

Start storing food and water now before its too late.

This is the most important rule. because without hope, your already dead..

Survival depends upon your ability to shake yourself out of the stupor of disbelief and hopelessness.

Most individuals freeze in an emergency. In the immediate confusion and chaos, the human brain tries to draw upon some familiar experience for a plan of action. Finding none, we become immobile. You have three seconds to decide that you have hope and move forward.

Beyond the geopolitical and socio-economic hurdles before us,
remember:

There are still a couple of months of winter weather for many parts of the country.

Spring storms are around the corner

Summer storms (tornado/ flood) are only a few months away.

Hurricane season is only a few months away

Prepare for those things that have an actual propensity of happening within your geographic area, and you'll be prepared should the day arise that zombies start walking down your street.

If there's no food available, there won't be any gasoline either. Raiders are not gonna come from very many miles away.

Stock up on dog food. Keep your watch dogs alive, and you can eat it, too, if you get hungry. then you can eat the dogs if starving.

100# Beans, 100# rice, 50# pop-corn, 5 gallons of lard or vegetable oil, couple pounds of salt, a few dozen cans of salmon, chicken, or mackerel--easily keep a couple of people alive for a year.

Throw in some freeze dried veggies, a few pounds of coffee, and some Ramen noodles, and you're livin' high on the hog.

Several aerosol cans of wasp/hornet spray conveniently located throughout your dwelling will give you some protection and time to escape or reach a better weapon. They are better than pepper spray since pepper spray is in a fine mist or stream of liquid and could blow back at you.

Hornet spray comes out in a strong stream of foam and its range is from 15 to 20 feet, longer than pepper spray.

Aim for the bad guy's face. This stuff will temporarily blind them and requires medical assistance. While they are screaming and jerking around blinded you can either run away or hit them with a skillet & tie them up.

The nice thing (for you) about this stuff aside from its effectiveness is IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE A WEAPON. Says so right on the can. You can explain away having several cans by claiming there's wasps coming in through the window, air vents or whatever and that you or someone in your household is allergic to them.

I have cans in the bedroom, bathroom, and near exterior doors. You could also carry a can in a car or in a large purse. Cost here is about $5 per can.

LOL! That was written in response to an English poster who is not only unarmed but would have a legal hassle to deal with if they protect themselves with anything normally considered a weapon.

Even for gun owners, wasp spray is useful stuff. It could give you time to get to your gun if you don't carry it with you every waking moment.

Please don't do this.

Bag dog food is primarily corn meal that has been sprayed with animal fat in order to make it appeal to the dog. It won't kill you, but it surely won't help you live - and yes, there is a difference. The amount necessary for consumption in order to be beneficial is simply not practical for storage, transport or, for that matter - consumption.

Canned dog food is only slightly better, however, there are many more options for better tasting, more nutritious food that is in better packaging (nitrogen flushed mylar bags), lighter, and much more easily stored and transported.

Of the two, the canned/ meaty dog food would be the better, but that's not saying much. I would highly recommend picking up a can tomorrow and try it - I'll just about guarantee minds will change about depending on dog food; especially when you put this in the light of a cold, dark environment, with no condiments to cover the taste, and your body running out of fuel, requiring you to eat more and more of the same awful stuff over and over with no definite end date in sight.

I don't/ won't feed bagged or canned dog food to my dog (dogs are carnivores not meant to have a diet of processed corn), therefore, I don't plan on eating it either. The fact that we have the luxury to discuss the possibilities of various foods via the Internet also means that we also have the luxury of preparing now with edible, nutritious food that won't leave you with explosive diarrhea at the best, or with scurvy at the other end of the spectrum.

As much as I hate the canned foods like ravioli (very high sodium content), I'd rather see someone eating that instead - the cans, weight, and price are comparable.
