This week, I'm going to show you how to find out if you are being actively tracked online and how to block it permanently.
So last week I started this thread discussing the hidden locked files on your PC called index.dat files and how to erase them for good.

Thread: If you think that erasing your internet files with a program protects you...think again.

This week, I'm going to show you how to not only find out if you are being tracked, and which companies/websites are tracking you, but also how to block them for good.

First, to see if you are actually being tracked. (you are) We will go back to that other thread and download one of the index.dat viewers, specifically Index.dat viewer 3.

You can download it for free from here.

[link to www.softpedia.com]

Once you get that installed, open it and it will automatically list every site that you have clicked on (and some that you haven't). If you followed my other thread and didn't erase them already, naughty naughty.

But regardless, you will still have a few from current internet activity. What you need to do is go through that list and start picking out sites names that you know you haven't clicked on.

One example may be imrworldwide.com. They are a known tracking site and sell your records to anybody who will pay for them. They also target you and do so without your permission. If you;re ok with that, this thread isn't for you.

That's just one example but there may be more. If you don't recognize the url that the index.dat viewer displays, do a Google search on it. Chances are it has been discussed in length at various online forums.

This site offers a free do not track me add on that will block over 600 different tracking agencies. The addon apperas to be free but I believe you can pay more and get a better service.

[link to addons.mozilla.org (secure)]

This link is for Firefox users and is absolutely free.

Both will block most tracking companies.

If you're ever worried about new ones popping up in the future, simply run the index.dat viewer again and see if anything strange pops up.

It only takes a few minutes to do all of this.

Well worth it in my opinion.

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. If you haven't switched over to Firefox yet, you may want to start thinking about it.

I don't know why anybody would even want to use a browser that is not only know to be tracking them live, but also stores those files in your computer, hides them and then locks them so that they can't be deleted by the average user.

Sorry free for 7 days before they make you buy a subscription.

Still though, it will give you an idea just how many are out there.

I'm still digging for a free anti tracker though.

Be patient.

Uber-dumb question, so please forgive me...

Why Firefox? I use Chrome and I assume that's no good because Google can track everything, correct? IE completely sucks and I refuse to use it. I'm open to Firefox, but am curious why that's the one you're recommending. TIA for answering!

I use DNT for Firefox. Since Dec. 5, 2012:

334,282 blocked tracking sites total, GLP has three "social" sites and one company trying to track me everytime I'm here.

Use Firefox and download DNT...they work great in concert with each other, as the OP said.

It doesn't track you like IE does for one. Two, it is fully encrypted on web pages that allow encryption. It also has a wide variety of addons that are extremely useful for just about anything you can think of. They're kinda like apps for PC users.

If enough people are interested I will do a tutorial on encrypting everything on your PC some time in the future. That one can get complicated though.
