We know this because the ones in the finger and arm don't feel anything when sending the "pain" signal to the brain. We also know that probing the brain of a living person does not cause any pain. The brain cells themselves do not feel pain while being probed electrically or even when damaged.

Since individual nerve and brain cells do not perceive pain (or other perceptions like sound, smell or vision), how can perception explained as happening in the brain? There is nothing in the brain to actually perceive anything. The only explanation is that perception (or consciousness) is a non-material process. There must be a soul or spirit to convert the brain cell activity into all the perceptions that we're familiar with.
