The state sheriff's association pushed the idea Tuesday, saying the move would help them make drug arrests and curb a growing problem of prescription drug abuse. But patient advocates say opening up people's medicine cabinets to law enforcement would deal a devastating blow to privacy rights. Allowing sheriffs' offices and other law enforcement officials to use the state's computerized list would vastly widen the circle of people with access to information on prescriptions written for millions of people. As it stands now, doctors and pharmacists are the main users. Sheriffs made their pitch Tuesday to a legislative health care committee looking for ways to confront prescription drug abuse. Local sheriffs said that more people in their counties die of accidental overdoses than from homicides. "We can better go after those who are abusing the system," said Lee County Sheriff Tracy L. Carter. Read more: [link to www.newsobserver.com] "curb a growing problem of prescription drug abuse" That does not make sense. How could they know if I am taking to many pain killers. If someone is in massive pain one day and takes double their normal dose, will they get arrested for being one short and therefore a possible drug dealer? This is a very slippery slope and hopefully this crock of shit does not pass. It's good to hear a healthcare pro chime in on this issue, and I agree with you. As I have some close friends in the same field, I have posed them this same question that I now ask you: How much do you feel the pharmacutical industry is to blame here? In the last 5 years I have had 2 back surgeries(3 herniated disc's), and a round of NH Lymphoma(stage 2). Needless to say I wound up pretty damn strung out, not to mention the withdrawls I had to go through for 3-6 months! It is a vicious cycle. As far as letting cops in to check my fucking medicine cabinet...they can have my house keys, when they pry them from my cold, dead fingers!!! One thing to look at here is the medical marajuana issue(which I am ALL FOR!), is NC a med mj state? Are they trying to set a precident to avoid legal loop holes for ILLEGAL searches??? Cause IMHO, this is the biggest crock of shit I've EVER heard of! Talk about a COMPLETE waste of police resources... If the person who introduced this is an "elected official", and EVER get's re-elected...then the people of NC EPICALLY failed. "Bitch please, I'm from Michigan!" |

Well, this is exactly the thing that HIPPA was designed to thwart. So, if this did withstand challenge, it would mean the end of privacy period. The thing is, lawmakers can pass any moronic excuse for a law that they wish. They could pass a law that makes breathing illegal, for instance. And the law would stand, until it was challenged in court. Once challenged, it must stand on its constitutionality or be stricken down. That's the way the system works. And, on the whole, it works pretty well. (yeah, I know. I just opened a whole can of whoopa$$ on myself with that last sentence, but darned it, I'm a proud American and I believe it.)
