Nitrogen injection into damaged Fukushima reactors halts for over 2 hrs The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant said Wednesday that the injection of nitrogen gas into three crippled reactors ceased for over 2 hours, although it detected no abnormalities that could raise fears of a hydrogen explosion. Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the interruption occurred possibly because a filter of the supply device was clogged by dust as a result of strong winds seen from Tuesday evening. Hirano made the proposal--which he stressed was only his private idea and did not represent government policy--when he met with fukushima Gov. Noda began a meeting on Thursday night with Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura, Nuclear Crisis Minister Goshi Hosono and economy minister Yukio Edano. In a similar meeting on Tuesday, Noda told Edano to draft new safety standards for reactors 3 and 4 of the nuclear plant at Oi in Fukui Prefecture. They are among 4 reactors suspended for regular inspections at the plant, run by Kansai Electric Power Company. [link to www3.nhk.or.jp] . |

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura was referring to 2 reactors in Fukui Prefecture that are suspended for regular inspections. Fujimura said that in restarting reactors after regular inspections it is not required by law to obtain consent from local communities. Anonymous Coward User ID: 13853224 Australia 04/05/2012 04:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Radioactive water from Fukushima power plant may have flowed into the Pacific Ocean Quoting: AwakeInTassie April 05, 2012 8:07PM ABOUT 12 tonnes of radioactive water has leaked at Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, with the facility's operator saying some may have flowed into the Pacific Ocean. Tokyo Electric Power Company said the leak was found early today from a pipe attached to a temporary decontamination system. The water had already gone through part of the cleansing process. After the water is used to cool the reactors it contains significant amounts of radioactive substances. It is then put into the water-processing facility so it can be recycled for use as coolant. "Our officials confirmed that cooling water leaked at a joint in the pipes," a TEPCO spokesman said, adding "it is possible that part of the water may have flowed outside the facility and poured into the ocean." The leak has been plugged and the utility was investigating the cause of the accident and how much, if any, water flowed into the Pacific, the spokesman said. The accident was the latest of several leaks of radioactive water at the troubled plant, undermining the government's claim made in December that the shuttered Fukushima reactors were now under control. In one incident last month, about 120 tonnes of radioactive water leaked at the plant's water decontamination system and about 80 litres seeped into the ocean, according to TEPCO. The plant about 220km northeast of Tokyo was crippled by meltdowns and explosions caused by Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami in March last year. Radiation was scattered over a large area and made its way into the sea, air and food chain in the weeks and months after the disaster. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from their homes around the plant and swathes of this zone remain badly polluted. The clean-up is proceeding slowly, amid warnings that some towns could be uninhabitable for three decades. [link to www.news.com.au] |

Southern OR User ID: 7410435 United States 04/06/2012 08:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Possible Fukushima Leak Renews Concerns About Plant's Stability TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Water containing radioactive substances may have leaked into the ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the plant operator said Thursday, the latest example of continued problems at the stricken plant more than three months after the government declared conditions there stabilized. The leakage occurred at a pipeline carrying concentrated radioactive water from a desalination device to a storage tank early Thursday, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) said in a press release. The leak was contained after 30 minutes when valves were closed. The company estimates roughly 12 tons of contaminated water may have escaped into the ocean. High levels of cesium 134 and 137 were confirmed at the point of the leak roughly 300 meters from the ocean, but no detectable amounts of radioactive contamination have been found in the sea water. The company will further investigate the possible spread of contamination and its potential impact in the ocean, including the existence of beta radiation that could contain harmful strontium, company spokesman Yoshikazu Nagai said.
