The gas is hazardous, but does not pose a danger to the public.

"There's no danger to the public," Coffey said. "We want to make sure that everyone's aware of that. And this was non-radiological, just a hazardous material -- a hazardous gas, actually -- that has been mitigated at this time."

~

The Morning Rant from my couch. WTF!

This kind of 'spokesman speak' is getting on my nerves, lately.

It's hazardous and yet does not pose a danger.

Do I understand my native language? Are dangerous and hazardous no longer synonyms? Did I miss the memo?

This is a direct, unambiguous contradiction.

I understand the intent is to inform the public that; although the gas is toxic it was a small amount, the wind has dispersed and diluted it and we have surveyed the area for toxins. The environment is now safe and regular breathing can now be done without a gas mask.

'just a hazardous material'

JUST a hazardous material, as if to emphasize that a hazardous material is somehow..... mmmm

HARMLESS????

Number of foreign visitors to Japan recovering
Japan is seeing substantial recovery in the number of foreign visitors to the country after a sharp drop following last year's March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says about 679,000 foreigners visited Japan for sightseeing or business this March.

The figure was up 92.4 percent from March 2011, for the first year-on-year increase since the disaster. But the figure is 4.4 percent down from March 2010.

Fukushima Daiichi: Inside the debacle
[link to tech.fortune.cnn.com]

For the past year, through interviews with employees of TEPCO (some officially sanctioned by the company, some without its knowledge), government officials and nuclear industry experts in Japan and abroad, we've attempted to answer two of the most fundamental issues at the heart of nuclear debate now roiling Japan: how could the accident at Fukushima Daiichi have happened—and how, in particular, could it have happened in Japan, a country once known, not so long ago, for its sheer management and engineering competence?

The answers are bracing. The epic disaster at Fukushima Daiichi represents failure at almost every level, from how the Japanese government regulates nuclear power, to how TEPCO managed critical details of the crisis under desperate circumstances.

~

Oh really. For a year, huh? I guess they weren't trying very hard. I could have answered those questions a year ago...

Inspection of unit 2 torus April 18. Source: TEPCORobot Searching for Leaks in Unit 2 Torus Returns Empty-Handed

[snip]

TEPCO sent a robot to inspect hatches on the wetwell of unit 2 for leaks Wednesday, but none were found in the two locations filmed. Leaks suspected to be in the torus have sent the 200 metric tons of water pumped daily over the reactor core flowing into the plant’s lower floors. The Asahi reported TEPCO had assumed the hatchways were the source of the leaks. The company is planning a similar survey for unit 3

Hmmm.... 200 metric tons of water daily? Not the hatches?

Maybe it's holes in the bottom of the vessel? Made by a meltdown, maybe?

Balls from disaster-hit area found in Alaska
Two sports balls found washed up on an island off the US state of Alaska are believed to have been swept away by tsunami that hit northeastern Japan last year and drifted across the Pacific.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the balls were found on Middleton Island in the Gulf of Alaska and that they are written with Japanese names.

A close look at a photo of one of the balls, a soccer ball, shows the names Yuki, Akinori and Shunsuke written in Chinese characters.

Sale of Japanese rice resumed in China
The sale of Japanese rice has resumed in China after being suspended following the nuclear accident in Japan.

The move comes after the Chinese government partially eased restrictions on food imports from Japan in November.

Beginning this month, a total of 14 tons of a variety called "Nanatsuboshi" from Hokkaido is being sold at department stores and supermarkets in Beijing. The rice is priced at around 15 dollars per kilogram.

Japan utility group did not compile plan on reprocessed plutonium usage
A utility industry group did not compile a plan on the usage of 0.5 ton of plutonium set to be extracted at a reprocessing plant in Aomori Prefecture in fiscal 2012 that started on April 1, a move that goes against government policy, sources close to the matter said Saturday.

The Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan's failure to prepare the plan before the March 31 deadline could trigger criticism from international society, where transparency of plutonium use is urged given the risks of it being used for nuclear weapons or nuclear terrorism.

Japan currently possesses around 30 tons of plutonium.

Alaska soccer ball traced to tsunami survivor
A Japanese teenager who lost his home and belongings in last year's tsunami will get one thing back -- a soccer ball he received as a farewell gift from his classmates.

The soccer ball washed ashore on Middleton Island in the US state of Alaska. David Baxter, an Alaska resident found the ball during a visit to the island last month.

The ball carries messages dated March 2005 to Misaki Murakami, a third grader at a primary school in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture.

Firms boost output of energy-saving semiconductors
Japanese electronics makers are boosting production of energy-saving semiconductors to respond to growing public awareness of the need to save electricity.

So-called "power semiconductors" control electrical currents more efficiently to help reduce power use. The chips are installed in air conditioners, industrial machines, electric vehicles and personal computers.

The makers predict that demand for power-saving electric appliances will grow because Japan is likely to face electricity shortages, especially in the summer.

Fukushima plant device with inadequate quake resistance left for 30 yrs
An electric device whose quake resistance was deemed insufficient in 1978 remained in place at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant for more than 30 years, contributing to the loss of external power at the facility hit by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March last year, sources familiar with the matter said Sunday.

The circuit breaker installed at a place to receive power from outside at the nuclear plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co. collapsed due to a magnitude-9.0 quake, the sources said. A report compiled by a research institution on electric equipment said in October 1978 that the type of breaker was not resistant enough to temblors.

HIROSHIMA — Organ samples and medical records on more than 1,200 babies who were stillborn or died shortly after birth after being carried by mothers who survived the 1945 U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were sent to the United States for radiation research, a researcher in Hiroshima says.

"Newborns were treated in the same way as guinea pigs for the study of nuclear weapons and radiation," Takahashi said, adding that the "current radiation standard" is based upon that.

Arnie confirmed the SFP criticalities with iodine analysis as well as the loss of containment indicated by no pressure in reactor 2 [holes] with it being the source of leaks and ocean contamination.

Also that reactor 2 temp is indicating it is not being cooled effectively and indicates 'hot gases'.

Anyone who saw the 'blue glow' on the pointscope stills would agree that part of the glow spread from a column to the horizontal. Common sense would dictate it was the outline of a reactor and an SFP .

Re: *** Fukushima *** and other nuclear-----updates and links
You need to explain the Pics
and talk about your doubts,
otherwise you failed again,
like always!

Also you are calling Tepco a fraud
and that they are faking their Readings,
the Photos and Videos, you do not
accept them as a Source in a Discussion
but when they serve your own interest you are
using this Source a lot, isn't this very
Inconsequent?

(for example today with your absolut wrong
interpretation of the Waterlevels, you didn't
even know that they have a closed Watercirculation)

@Cp.

your Hate makes you blind,
much blinder than you are
because of your unfortunate Birth!

But we can start for a real exchange
of Information with a Benefit for all of us
because until now you bring nothing
to debunk the Pictures of Nr.3 and Nr.4,
according to your Statments and Threads
they had been exploded, burned out
or what so ever,
how do you explain the Pics?popcorn

How do you explain the low Levels
of Radiation in Daiichi,
how do you explain the minimal
Contamination around that Plant,
according to you there is no Contaiment,
is Nuclear Energy really "that" harmless
and only a small surrounding Area get
lost for the Human Use
or i am right and we had and have a lot
of Luck and help by God/s, Aliens or
Hankerchiefs?
