A 'comet' has a specific definition and they originate inside our own solar system. I believe this object has a similar composition to a comet though it is probably more 'dirt' than "snowball', but it does not originate from inside our solar system, is not following a trajectory indicating it does, and apparently is not behaving at all like an ordinary comet. It is also much larger than any comet ever observed. quote anon astrophysicist NEAT was of similar composition i believe and it was bigger than Earth. At the time of it's nearest approach to the Sun it's coma was larger than the Sun itself, just to give you an idea of the show we can expect. When ISON gets to within the orbital distance of Mars it will be almost as if there is another Sun, IT WILL BE VISIBLE AT MID DAY AND ILLUMINATE THE EARTH AT NIGHT.. It is most likely trailing hundreds if not thousands of potentially Earth impactors with it. We have no idea at this point in time how close it will come to Earth. end Quoting: Anonymous astrophysicst 1350433 I JUST WANTED IT LISTED HERE FOR HISTORY OH NO ! In mr Van Flandrins [deceased] book he makes real clear that the "shrinking sphere of influence " will release orbital objects as it nears the sun! Anonymous Coward User ID: 35346045 United States 04/03/2013 12:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | what are you smoking? The Jan. 30 UVOT observations reveal that ISON was shedding about 112,000 pounds (51,000 kg) of dust, or about two-thirds the mass of an unfueled space shuttle, every minute. By contrast, the comet was producing only about 130 pounds (60 kg) of water every minute, or about four times the amount flowing out of a residential sprinkler system. "The mismatch we detect between the amount of dust and water produced tells us that ISON's water sublimation is not yet powering its jets because the comet is still too far from the sun," Bodewits said. "Other more volatile materials, such as carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide ice, evaporate at greater distances and are now fueling ISON's activity." While the water and dust production rates are relatively uncertain because of the comet's faintness, they can be used to estimate the size of ISON's icy body. Comparing the amount of gas needed for a normal comet to blow off dust at the rate observed for ISON, the scientists estimate that the nucleus is roughly 3 miles (5 km) across, a typical size for a comet. This assumes that only the fraction of the surface most directly exposed to the sun, about 10 percent of the total, is actively producing jets. In addition to this, you can clearly see the beginnings of the comet appearance(coma, tail) in the very image that you yourself are taking your measurment from, and NOT that resembling a solid body alone. |

Comet ISON - icy traveller? User ID: 29690988 Australia 04/03/2013 03:06 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Space is 99.9% Plasma, and plasma is HOT, damn HOT. Initial signs of our galaxy's halo came from the Chandra observatory, which observed eight objects shining brightly in X-ray light, and found that some of this light was being absorbed by charged oxygen atoms around the Milky Way. Scientists determined that this absorbing gas is between 1 million and 2.5 million Kelvin (1.8 million and 4.5 million degrees Fahrenheit) — a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun. [link to www.space.com] It's time once and for all to toss the "icy" comet theory into the bin - The halo around a comet is no different to the northern lights - it it ionized gas glowing from the effects of the sun's magnetism. Common sense is applicable here when I ask you, how without the hand of some god can a comet travel through a plasma rich environment (as quouted above and via the link, 1.8 million and 4.5 million degrees Fahrenheit) and still retain it's ice? BS has come full circle. |

The BS is in full swing! For a start a comet can form a coma at around 5 AU from the sun. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Hale–Bopp's orbital position was calculated as 7.2 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, placing it between Jupiter and Saturn and by far the greatest distance from Earth at which a comet had been discovered by amateurs. Most comets at this distance are extremely faint, and show no discernible activity, but Hale–Bopp already had an observable coma.
