these tangential references indicate that the intended reader of the Satires was highly educated.[3] The Satires are concerned with perceived threats to the social continuity of the Roman citizens: social-climbing foreigners, unfaithfulness, and other more extreme excesses of their own class. The intended audience of the Satires constituted a subset of the Roman elite, primarily adult males of a more conservative social stance.

lines 10.56–89—It is all too easy to fall from power – like Sejanus. The mob follows Fortuna and cares for nothing but bread and circuses.

The narrative frame of this poem is a dinner party where many potential dysfunctions in the ideal of the patron-client relationship are put on display. Rather than being a performance of faux-equality, the patron (Virro as in 9.35) emphasizes the superiority of himself and his peers (amici) over his clients (viles amici) by offering food and drink of unequal quality to each. Juvenal concludes with the observation that the clients who put up with this treatment deserve it.

 Rich…

For wealthy Romans, life was good. They lived in beautiful houses – often on the hills outside Rome, away from the noise and the smell. They enjoyed an extravagant lifestyle with luxurious furnishings, surrounded by servants and slaves to cater to their every desire. Many would hold exclusive dinner parties and serve their guests the exotic dishes of the day.

…and poor

Poorer Romans, however, could only dream of such a life. Sweating it out in the city, they lived in shabby, squalid houses that could collapse or burn at any moment. If times were hard, they might abandon newborn babies to the streets, hoping that someone else would take them in as a servant or slave. Poor in wealth but strong in numbers, they were the Roman mob, who relaxed in front of the popular entertainment of the time – chariot races between opposing teams, or gladiators fighting for their life, fame and fortune.

Channelers are not born equal; some are stronger in the Power and can handle more of it than others. Men and women who can channel are different in this respect and in many others, regarding the One Power. For example, male channellers can on average channel more of the Power than female channelers, similar to the gendered difference in physical strength.

Channelers must always be careful, as the One Power is dangerous. Besides providing an addictive stimulating effect, channelers who draw too much of the Power into themselves can kill themselves or render themselves brain-dead. If they are lucky--relatively speaking--they will only burn the ability to channel out of themselves, leaving them unable to channel ever again.

Severing a person from the ability to channel is considered by most to be worse than death. A severed channeler can still feel saidin's or saidar's presence, but they can no longer seize or embrace it. It is often described to be as if part of the channeler itself has been cut away. In men, the experience of being severed is described as similar to castration.

Without the ecstasy of the One Power within themselves, those who are severed usually lose the will to live, and will often die of various direct causes connected to this.

Death after being severed is commonly caused by suicide, refusing to eat or drink, or simply becoming too weak to continue living.

It makes sense why people wouldn't want to come back here, after they get there.

I didn't and being separate from it, is something I have to live with.

Not that I am in any rush to get back. I enjoy life.

I get why people come back too. So many things to do and experience here.

I overloaded my brain a few years ago and have since lost the ability to channel. It is every bit as described above in terms of there is a feeling of having something cut away. I do not see this thing that was cut away as anything more than training wheels though, however there are no books or guides on how to dream without a channel for creative influence.
In a sense it is like I have to create my own 'dream' now but I know they are my own illusion in a sense, ergo I know I am only acting to pass time and satisfy peoples expectations.

This can be seen as a loss or an opportunity. Obviously having the 'training' wheels off without knowing how to ride is frustrating but not the end of the world for me personally.

Chaos is total disillusion. Even the memory that any of this ever existed. For everyone.

Tempting I know..

The Dark One

The Dark One is a primordial, sapient, cosmic force of evil in the universe. The Dark One's goal is to break the spirits and hearts of whatever sapient beings he can influence, and, if freed from his prison, eventually to remake Creation in his own image.

His actions appear to indicate that he is also a force of chaos, destruction, and discord, as many of his underlings, as well as Shaidar Haran, seemed to place a great deal of emphasis on increasing the amount of chaos in the world at any opportunity.

His existence is revealed to be an integral part of human free will, as his malign influence encourages humanity to make selfish choices. If destroyed, humans (and likely other sapient beings) would possibly become completely incapable of evil, violence, or selfishness in any respect.

He is said to have been imprisoned by the Creator at the beginning of time in a separate dimension outside of normal reality, and outside of the pattern, and has sought ever since to break free of his prison and destroy the Wheel of Time and remake the world according to his image and purpose, or alternatively, to destroy creation completely. He is currently imprisoned.

[link to wot.wikia.com]

 Quoting: Seer777

cont..

..the Dark One is described as being powerful beyond measure; a universe-spanning force of evil that is both incomprehensible in its nature and infinite in its being.

His presence is described as being beyond space, size, and time, and his essence is said to be utterly empty, yet infinite.

Though the Dark One is beyond the concept of time, he is constrained by it in his interactions with the Pattern simply because it is an integral part of reality. The situation is described as being akin to an artist's imagination exceeding the limits of the material they have to work with.

IntotheDarkenss
 Quoting: Seer777

cont..

Verin Sedai has noted the Dark One is the "embodiment of paradox and chaos, destroyer of reason and logic, breaker of balance, the unmaker of order".

She also states that, while she believes she understands the Forsaken, she has no idea what the Dark One's goal is, what he wants, or even what he is. Moridin has stated that the Dark One's eventual goal will not be to destroy reality and remake it, but rather to simply destroy everything.

Choronzon

Choronzon is deemed to be held in check by the power of the goddess Babalon, inhabitant of binah, the third sephirah of the Tree of Life. Both Choronzon and the abyss are discussed in Crowley's Confessions (ch. 66):

"The name of the Dweller in the Abyss is Choronzon, but he is not really an individual. The Abyss is empty of being; it is filled with all possible forms, each equally inane, each therefore evil in the only true sense of the word—that is, meaningless but malignant, in so far as it craves to become real. These forms swirl senselessly into haphazard heaps like dust devils, and each such chance aggregation asserts itself to be an individual and shrieks, "I am I!" though aware all the time that its elements have no true bond; so that the slightest disturbance dissipates the delusion just as a horseman, meeting a dust devil, brings it in showers of sand to the earth."

Re: Mad World
If I turned that idea on its head, we might get Kali. You say darkness, but there are many ideas of dark. Recently I learned that the idea of the left-handed being associated with evil is intimately linked to feminine power, the sea or womb that is the mother to eternity. Babylon's typhon. Her children kill her and drink her blood, but in the end their blood is the seed from which she emerges.

With Kali, they see her as ending the currents of time, as if cutting off heads with a sword. But to her worshipers, the head was merely an illusion from which she had freed them from. Kali comes from beyond time - and she is the mother because she is the darkness into which everything can be absorbed. There is nothing she will not digest or integrate.

She is known as a goddess of death and destruction, but there is no evidence she was intended to be seen as such. She freed space for reorganization and rebirth. She also provided a way out for those who looked beyond all pretense.

“And, indeed, he soon discovered what a strange Goddess he had chosen to serve. He became gradually enmeshed in the web of Her all-pervading presence. To the ignorant She is, to be sure, the image of destruction; but he found in Her the benign, all-loving Mother. Her neck is encircled with a garland of heads, and Her waist with a girdle of human arms, and two of Her hands hold weapons of death, and Her eyes dart a glance of fire; but, strangely enough, Ramakrishna felt in Her breath the soothing touch of tender love and saw in Her the Seed of Immortality. She stands on the bosom of Her Consort, Siva; it is because She is the Sakti, the Power, inseparable from the Absolute. She is surrounded by jackals and other unholy creatures, the denizens of the cremation ground. But is not the Ultimate Reality above holiness and unholiness? She appears to be reeling under the spell of wine. But who would create this mad world unless under the influence of a divine drunkenness? She is the highest symbol of all the forces of nature, the synthesis of their antinomies, the Ultimate Divine in the form of woman. She now became to Sri Ramakrishna the only Reality, and the world became an unsubstantial shadow. Into Her worship he poured his soul. Before him She stood as the transparent portal to the shrine of Ineffable Reality.” (From The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna.)
 Quoting: [link to www.thoughtco.com (secure)]

of course, to worship Kali is an inversion of everything humanity tends to advocate. she is saturn, time, the ultimate force of inevitability, but she is also the mother of all, giver of life and compassion. it seems fine and simple if chaos were just a ravenous beast, but the dragon is only one part of the picture. the other half is truly dark, because it is unseen, yet the force which pervades the all. only those beyond babylon, the gate to the gods, understood this.

she stands upon all things mankind reviles as omens of death, and she destroys the destroyer, death itself, consigning it to an illusion no greater than that of life.

we enter through the womb out of the gate of birth, and enter back into the the womb through the gate of death. remember that video where death was a mother? she rocks her child to sleep.

I think Kali has probably resigned herself to being seen as the paragon of female wickedness, but that is the paradox of her holiness.

lol

I've yet to watch adventure time, or gravity falls. Seen clips of both, but not the series.

How are they? Both certainly drew a huge following.

Hearing "morty" there gave me a laugh chuckle

Gravity Falls is excellent. I am already on a second watch through. Genuinely laugh out loud funny and continually. At least for me. I like that kind of humor.

Weirdmageddon been theme ever since.

The parts I've seen are right up my alley.

[link to wot.wikia.com]

Bubbles of evil were first mentioned by Moiraine Damodred, who speaks of the Dark One's evil in the form of "bubbles rising from the things rotting on the bottom of a pond."[1] The bubbles attach themselves to threads in the pattern and burst causing supernatural and typically deadly events to occur. Moiraine thinks perhaps ta'veren will tend to attract these bubbles more powerfully than others do.

Funny how earlier you mention if all these creators read the same book/source material. Many overlapping themes/ideas.

Makes one ponder how they come to similar ideas (discounting just outright idea stealing).

100th monkey effect? Dna memories? A common source we all reach into for inspiration (the artist possessed by the brush)

It's creepy how it all fits together. For example, I learned of the Sul'dam yesterday.

After feeling physically ill for almost an hour, I'm hoping every single one was eventually hunted down and slaughtered. A fitting end to any that hold another, against their will.

Sul'dam (Old Tongue: Leash Holder) are Seanchan women who can control damane, women who can channel the One Power and are viewed as too dangerous to roam free in society. Sul'dam control damane through the use of an a'dam, a special ter'angreal that looks like a silver leash and bracelet. Using the a'dam, the sul'dam can sense the thoughts and feelings of the damane and also inflict pain or pleasure. When damane try to escape their a'dam, they undergo severe headaches that vanish when they stop thinking of escaping.

In reality, sul'dam are women who could learn to channel but are not born with the spark like damane are. Only recently has this fact come to light, and threatens to tear apart the fabric of Seanchan society, as sul'dam are honored at the same time damane are reviled. An a'dam will control a sul'dam if used against her, even if she does not know how to use the One Power.

Re: Mad World
A'dam

An a'dam (pronounced: AYE-dam) is a ter'angreal designed to hold a female channeler captive. It takes the form of a flexible silver collar and bracelet, usually joined by a long "leash" although that convention is not strictly necessary to its functioning. They form a basis for the "leashed channeler" social status in the Seanchan Empire; the leashed woman is called a damane ("Leashed one"), and the women who holds the bracelet a sul'dam ("Leash holder")

Heh, that becomes a matter of consternation among the groups organised against the dark ones armies.
Compounding the issue was many factors, some as simple/complicated as some damane reacting with horror at the prospect of release, particularly those native to the empire. Conditioning and "social norms" convinced them off their inherent "evil".

Aes sedai/Wilders captured were more resilient, but the chapters on such a capture showcase the physical torment accompany the psychological (such as re-naming captives after pets)

How did they get them on and how were they removed? They had to catch them?

I noticed they have one for males too.

Male A'dam

A similar ter'angreal exists to allow control of male channelers. It consists of a collar and two bracelets, in separate pieces, all made of black cuendillar. Though it has been referred to as an "a'dam for men," it should be noted that it dates from the Breaking Of The World, centuries before the a'dam was invented. This version of the device allows for far more control over the subject, but it requires two women to maintain that control as opposed to one.

If only a single woman attempts to use it, a high degree of possibility exists that the device will, given time, give the subject complete control over whomever is wearing the bracelet.

Re: Mad World
Shielding is the act of blocking someone from the One Power, an incredibly useful tactic when a channeling foe needs to be subdued. A shielded person can still feel the Source, but is unable to touch it in any way.

Unable to channel; they can be tied in weaves of air, or simply grabbed by soldiers.

Re: Mad World
Dragon

"And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was as blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World.

And him they named Dragon."

Re: Mad World
The Dark One's counterstroke, however, rendered the 68 surviving Companions instantly mad. During the following years, they and all other male Aes Sedai broke the world

[link to wot.wikia.com]

The Last Battle was prophesied in several accounts of many people, the most central one being the Karaethon Cycle (The Prophecies of the Dragon), though other prophecies by different societies included their perspectives.

According to prophecy, if the Dark One had prevailed he would have escaped from his prison and remade all of time and space in his image. The forces of the prophecies did not include a clear, specific outcome to the Last Battle, specifics of this eventuality, and it has proven a subject of some debate between philosophers.
