Thinking about getting a Ruger Mini 14. Any opinions? | |
GreatCaesarsGhost! (OP) User ID: 8640508 United States 09/24/2016 11:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Mini 14 is a gas piston design whereas most ARs (including my own) are direct gas impingement systems. Both are good systems and have their strengths and weaknesses. In a SHTF situation, I'd say that the Mini 14 and the AR would both perform the same function more or less equally. Neither one is ideal for combat (a 30 cal rifle would be better, IMHO) but they would serve well as hunting rifles for medium and even large game (under the right circumstances). |

Shooting is a hobby that I share with my son and anything that gets us spending quality time together is a good thing in my book. A new firearm is just another excuse to go to the range with my son and spend the day having a good time sighting it in and testing it out. Last Edited by Literally Hitler on 09/24/2016 11:18 PM |

I'm accustomed to deer rifles (.270 and .300 Win Mag are favorite chambering choices of mine). I like how they point and how they naturally meet your cheek when you shoulder them. Quoting: GreatCaesarsGhost! I've been looking at Ruger Mini 14s for a while. They have the same action as an M1A (rotating bolt) which I like a lot. The price is just over $700 for a new one with a nice wood stock. That's a good price for Ruger quality if you ask me. If I ever wanted to go the "tacti-cool" route with it (not likely), there are replacement stocks available. 30 round mags are available from Ruger (they're $25 which is pretty high). Anybody got one of these? I'd like to hear your take on them. I've never shot one. Mini is okay but I had accuracy problems with mine, particularly as the barrel heated up. You might like a Browning BLR, it's a rack-n-pinion lever action. I had a 243, it was extremely accurate and light, has detachable 5 shot magazine, many different calibers. |

It was the paratrooper model with folding stock and 30 round mag that was featured on the show. A badass rifle for a badass TV show. awesome! I am no expert but from what I have gathered the Mini might have a longer life span as far as the internals and the way the gun operates, where as an AR will need replacement parts if your thinking long term and tens of thousands of rounds shot through it. Think the bolt, bolt carrier group ect. The AR is usually more accurate and the thicker barrel design allows for more rapid fire shots fired through it at a time, which might be useful in a fire fight. If you get the Mini get the new one with a thicker barrel. IF I could only have one I would go AR with extra bolts, parts, .22 conversion kits, and buy more ammo. |

I think the trade off is like this: A mini has longer-lasting parts but they are more expensive to replace when they finally give out (although they should last a lifetime under normal operating conditions). An AR has overall pretty long-lasting parts with a large variety and price-range of replacement parts. AR parts are everywhere. Everybody is making them. Hell, Kellogg's will probably start putting them in cereal boxes as prizes. Since I already have an AR, I'll get a Mini to screw around with. They hold their value pretty well so I can always sell it if I don't like it. I can't imagine that I wouldn't like it though. It's got everything I like in a rifle. |
