I want to emphasize again - you will need far more water than you think you will. Gallons more!

Remember you will need water for flushing as long as you have a toilet to use. You can use water that has been used for sponge bathing, hair washing, dish washing, for flushing.

Put a garbage can outside if you live in a rainy area. That water can be used for flushing and washing yourself. If necessary, it can also be purified for drinking, cooking, tooth brushing.

Give thought in advance to what you will catch rainwater in, to be certain it is not something that will leach chemicals into the water. DO NOT use a black garbage bag liner - chemicals galore in them. A new or very clean metal garbage can would be perfect! If you have to use a plastic garbage can, as I will, best not to use that water for drinking, even after purifying, because the plastic can leach chemicals into the water.

However, that water can be used for flushing, washing oneself and the hair, cleaning.

Think water, water, and more water. Far more than you thinkyou will need.
 Quoting: Pooka

buy an inflatable child's wading pool to catch water if you have room...or set up a tarp with ground poles to elevate the corners to keep the water in.

don't be so concerned with chemicals leaching from these materials into the water. It will take YEARS of exposure to affect you in the slightest. Get the water any way you can. We are totally dependent on modern systems for water and those of us in urban areas or any area where you don't have water around you will be in deep doo doo. It only takes a few days of no water for massive dehydration/confusion/then dead. Sure, you can stay alive 12-13 days in a controlled situation...in a shtf? Forget it.

Use dirt/cat litter/sawdust/leaves/etc for a bucket toilet. Have an extra seat you can prop on their for comfort, or use as is. Dont waste water by flushing. The water in your toilet should be removed and the toilet not used imo. Using water from washing to flush will only work for one or two uses. Take it out of the equation and use a dry toilet. Put organic matter on the bottom, do your business, cover with more organic matter. It will not smell. Dump as needed.

keep tarps of various sizes. They fold up small and don't take much room. The can be a tent, a lean to, water catcher, all manner of uses for them.

Keep lawn size garbage bags. If you get caught out in the car and have to leave it, it will help. punch a hole in the bottom big enough to put your head through and use it as a poncho. you can even use it over your head but that will reduce how far down it hangs on you, but in the cold, not losing heat from your head is important. If you get wet and the wind can hit you, you can get hypothermia even when the temp is in the 60s. Try to stay dry.

Conserve everything as much as you can except drinking water. You can cut your food rations in half with not much deleterious effect except feeling hungry. Cutting your water leads to dehydration leads to confusion leads to inability to think WHICH YOU WILL NOT RECOGNIZE. Stay hydrated.

Okay I bought 25 lbs of rice and put in a Rubbermaid container with some bottled water. 12 years later ( last week ) we tried some. It smelled like plastic.
May be I should store it in a wooden box with out any thing else with it.

Also I just ate some nature alley oats and honey stored in a cardboard box that was 2007 and they were great. They will store long term in cardboard.
Just saying.

Cereal... like berry kix

It may have a year out expiration, but is stable much longer.

Not only is a smidge sweet for a rough time for the kids, but it satisfies that crunchy thing we developed this past century. And loaded with nutrients.

If you put the rice in food-quality sealable bags, then into the Rubbermaid container, I believe it would be fine.

Cardboard loses all body in the least dampness, so cardboard might be hard to use.

don't be so quick to kill them.

They need water as much as we do and if they are living there, they have a natural source of water.

Actually that is really good advice.

Just, for me, I only have a small quarter of an acre yard...so I know every square inch of it.

I sealed rice in a gallon ziplock bag (waited until the dead of winter when the air is super dry...no moisture at all, then sealed it).

10 years later my rice was PERFECT! Like I bought it yesterday.

Better than Rubbermaid containers are food grade 55 gallon steel drums with locking lids.

They sell for about $20.00 each and have multiple, practical purposes.

Let's remember to have a Bible at the ready - that is a tremendous source of comfort and explanation. I would not want to be without mine. If space is the issue, at least have a New Testament in your backpack. You don't know when you might want/need it, even if it is not something you read regularly now.

Sometimes prepping can get into your head a little too much.

Might cause you to start to panic.

What I do if that happens, is go back to the basics.

Your basic NEEDS are

Shelter
Water
Fire

EXPIRED CANNED GOODS!

If it has meat in it or if it's acidic (tomatoe sauce, pineapple, apple pie filling, etc.) you will be able to tell by the smell when you open it.

I've eaten soup that was 2 years beyond its experation date and spam 5 years beyond its expiration date...it was fine!

If those 2 don't apply, I wouldn't risk it (green beans, saur kraut, baked bean with no piece of pork inside, refried beans, etc).

ALso look for swelling of the can before opening...avoid that horrid rotten smell!

If the canned goods can's structural integrity is intact presumably it's contents will be good for literally forever. Years ago there was a news report of someone finding century old canned goods. It was expected to be full of rot and maggots after all this time. When they opened the cans the goods were still good looking. Some people tried the foodstuff and found out that while none of the foodstuff tasted remotely fresh nothing tasted rotten.

Also the swelled cans you just give to the stupid YouTubers looking to make a quick buck for doing stupid crap. Issue them the #SwoleCanChallenge for maximum hilarity.

Where to put water if you are in an apartmemt? As I mentioned earlier, fill water bottles, food jars, even vases with water and stash them everywhere. You can tuck small containers of water in shoes, purses, pockets of hanging clothes in your clothes closet. Put them under the sinks and in the back of cupboards.Put them in your empty suitcase or backpack.

Do the same with small food items like cans of tuna, small bags or containers of dry foods like rice.

Once you see how much space you have, you'll really get into it.

You need to have adequate supply of all that beforehand.

Don't wait, get on it tomorrow first thing. I have read that you have 1/2 hour to get out before roads clog and roadblocks are in place.

You've got a great plan, but your timing needs work. LOL
