very good video on space blankets and their proper use as most don't use them correctly and get cold.

he's a little slow, but info is worth it.

additionally, look at his fire set up at the end.

This can be done in a house with no heat and a candle or two to maintain enough heat to survive frigid temps.

And finally, read some of the comments under the vid as people relay how they used them to survive.

Canned and jarred food will last for up to 20 years if kept out of the sun in a cool place. The best cans to buy are the high-end brands on sale; the insides and outsides don't corrode as quickly, maintaining their seal.

Try to buy foods packed in oil, (sardines, tuna fish, roasted peppers, etc).

Buy 1 year's supply of the things you normally eat from cans and jars over 1 year, and, as you eat it, replace it in the back.

Don't store corrodable preps in a basement that ever gets damp; they won't last long.
 Quoting: TGus 74764022

High acid foods will go bad however if they are canned. That being tomatoes, pineapple, citrus and their juices and products made from them. The acid eats the lining off the cans, makes the food taste metallic.

We used to be able to get grapefruit in glass jars which would keep. Widh I could still get it.

You should probably go have one - your body is speaking to you - what kind of sammy?

-------

Something like a club.

It's morning & I'm still craving it...so yup...it's my body talking to me.

Maybe I'm low on nitrates & preservatives :)

I'll have to run to the grocery store.
 Quoting: Mental Case

bodies lie

my dog would not eat raw meat even though it's their natural food and would only eat processed dog foods.

it is likely not your body talking to you but the organisms in your body that live off the kind of food you're craving trying to influence you to feed them.

My daughter's little dog, the canine garbage disposal, would not touch a Jack in the Box hamburger. Did not recognize it as food I guess. But he would wolf down any other hamburger.

If you have a septic system, drano, liquid plumber etc. is never a good idea. If your drains are stopping up, you are doing something wrong. Nothing greasy or oily should go down the drain. You can reuse shortening by leaving it on the burner after removing the fried food to make sure all the moisture is evaporated then transfer to a glass jar after it has cooled some. For ecofriendly maintenance of your drains (also helps prevent fruitflies)...dump a half cup or so of baking soda in the drain, a couple drops of dishwashing liquid, and then pour vinegar. It will foam up and clean the areas water doesn't reach. Rinse afterward. For hair and the yucky stuff in the tub just get a pair of these [link to en.m.wikipedia.org (secure)]
Wipe the oily and greasy pans with a papertowel before washing. A plunger, hemostats, and method above is all I have ever needed. I have never had a stopped up drain.

UGH!

I went out to get my sammich fixinz & heard on the radio that between midnight tonight & 6:00 am we are going to get another 6-9 inches :(

Then I drove by my thrift bakery and they had a great big CLOSED sign...like closed forever :(

I think I'm craving a glass of wine now! But the liquor store probably closed down too.

If your tub drain looks like this: [link to www.homedepot.com (secure)] more than likely it is hair. The hardware that connects to the lever is notorious for that. You may need to unscrew the stopper a bit to get the hemostats in to reach the hair but that should take care of the problem.

Thank you for the pin, Crunch!! I think nobody expiring is "punished" at this time because of the inability to pay up again, since it is not your fault, but the fault of the company that suddenly decided GLP is "out there" too far.

Someone suggested earlier the uses of dental floss and that it is very strong - can be used for snares, as light tie-it lines, etc, as well as for teeth. Several pkgs might be a good idea.

How about making you peace with letting things of value go?

I have a comic book collection that I started in 1984 & still have.

Kept them all in perfect condition for 35 years.

It took a while...but I know if I ever have to bug out, I couldn't possibly take it with.

I have made my peace with that & if I have to bug out...my collection is toast. Nothing I can do but save my own life.

Do you have anything you might need to make peace with letting it go?

Not making your peace with it may cost you your life at a critical time!

Another must have...

Iron On Denim Patches for Clothing Jeans 12 PCS, 3 Colors (4.9" X 3.7")

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

better assortment here

Outuxed 24pcs Iron on Patches Fabric Patches for Clothing Jeans, Iron on Repair Kit, 4 Dark Colors, 3 Sizes(4.9"x6.9",3.7"x4.1",2"x3")

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

Another good plan, long as you recognize that with power out, you would have to hand sew the patches in place, and that is EXTREMELY difficult because of the adhesive. Needle gunks up and it's a horrid fight. Done that, as you can tell.

If that were the case, I would start a fire (in my rocket stove so as to need mainly sticks for fuel) heat up my small cast iron skillet & iron the patches on with the small skillet.

Wise advice to make your peace now with what must be left behind. Of course lock your doors, in hopes you return to your home with everything intact, but know it is extremely unlikely you will ever see your prized possessions again.

Interestingly, I've been doing that over the past few years, not for the sake of prepping or bugging out, but because there comes a time to let go - we won't be taking these things with us either bugging out, or passing away. Giving them to someone who'd be blessed by these gifts feels delightful. Not having them hanging on your back, a great weight you must drag around, feels even better!

Mental Case, thank you, sir, for such good advice!

Okay, this might seem a bit strange, but I am on a septic tank, so I use phone book or newspaper for the most often occurring restroom issues. I don’t flush the wet paper. Only the others. I save lots of money by doing this and can have my septic flushed in 5 or 6 years rather than 3. A lot of Amish use this method.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69118180

We have the same septic issues. In fact there is only one brand of tp we buy that gives the least trouble (angel soft).

This might sound strange, but a couple of years ago I bought a couple of bidet attachments on amazon. They attach between the bowl and seat and connect to the water line. They work great for taking care of business and we have reduced our tp usage by 90%.

I use only Scott tissue, as my parents plumber told them it is septic safe.

The bidet does not sound strange to me at all!, I do try to conserve water as best as possible, yet this might help me conserve paper goods as well!!!
Can you tell me which one you bought? The hot cold type? Did it require a plumber to install?
I do hope you will see this as to help me out. Thanks!

This leads me back to a bible passage...it is harder for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven.

I don't take that as rich man equals bad man.

I take it as a rich man would have a hard time letting go of his worldly posessions & thus have a difficult time letting it go to enter heaven.
