Probably also ginsing:

"American Ginseng Modifies 137Cs-Induced DNA Damage and
Oxidative Stress in Human Lymphocytes"

"To explore the radioprotective potential of a standardized North American ginseng extract (NAGE), we recently have shown that the 137Cs-induced MN yields in human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) declined significantly with increasing concentrations of NAGE (19)."

Since dietary antioxidants are free radical scavengers that interfere with radical chain reactions administration of exogenous antioxidants should be possible to protect cells from IR-induced xidative stress. To test this hypothesis, and to further verify the radioprotective potential of NAGE, in this present study, we assessed the impact of different concentrations of NAGE on intracellular total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and levels of ROS production in human PBL before and after 137Cs exposure. Because the formation of MN in dividing cells is the result
of chromosome breakage due to unrepaired or misrepaired DNA damage, MN is one of worldwide used biomarkers for genotoxicity testing and biomonitoring studies.

"Thus, we also evaluated the correlation between the oxidative status and MN yield in PBL in the presence
and absence of NAGE at two different time points of NAGE application, both before and after radiation exposure."

We believe that the information generated from this study will provide the foundation for clinical trials to assess the potential of standardized NAGE as an adjuvant natural
radioprotector, not only for cancer patients undergoing RT, but also as a dietary radiation countermeasure for scenarios such as accidental exposure or terrorist threats."

DNA repair enhancement of aqueous extracts of Uncaria tomentosa in a human volunteer study.
Sheng Y, Li L, Holmgren K, Pero RW.
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Section of Tumor and Immune Biology, University of Lund, Sweden. [email protected]
Abstract

The Uncaria tomentosa water extracts (C-Med-100) have been shown to enhance DNA repair, mitogenic response and leukocyte recovery after chemotherapy-induced DNA damage in vivo. In this study, the effect of C-Med-100 supplement was evaluated in a human volunteer study. Twelve apparently healthy adults working in the same environment were randomly assigned into 3 groups with age and gender matched. One group was daily supplemented with a 250 mg tablet containing an aqueous extract of Uncaria tomentosa of C-Med-100, and another group with a 350 mg tablet, for 8 consecutive weeks. DNA repair after induction of DNA damage by a standard dose of hydrogen peroxide was measured 3 times before supplement and 3 times after the supplement for the last 3 weeks of the 8 week-supplement period. There were no drug-related toxic responses to C-Med-100 supplement when judged in terms of clinical symptoms, serum clinical chemistry, whole blood analysis and leukocyte differential counts. There was a statistically significant decrease of DNA damage and a concomitant increase of DNA repair in the supplement groups (250 and 350 mg/day) when compared with non-supplemented controls (p < 0.05). There was also an increased tendency of PHA induced lymphocyte proliferation in the treatment groups. Taken together, this trial has confirmed the earlier results obtained in the rat model when estimating DNA repair enhancement by C-Med-100.

Yes. You found it on cat's claw! I will add it to the supplements list. See the post above on American ginseng, and panax ginseng is already on the list.

As for ashwagandha, it wouldn't surprise me at all, and if you want to post some research it will be great. As for me I am going to sleep, and will check back tomorrow.

GREAT THREAD, REPIN!!

You may wanna add CORIANDER to the list
[link to www.figswithbri.com]

And you may wanna add these, when you look into them

--------

Dr. Romeo Quijano of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at UP Manila told the Senate committee on health that eating uncontaminated fruits and vegetables high in anti-oxidants can help people who have been exposed to radiation. These include berries, guavas, guyabanos, and soy beans.

Quijano added “anti-radiation” herbs like turmeric, basil, rosemary, ginseng, and green tea can also help reduce the effects of radiation exposure.

Garlic and onions, which contain sulfur, and iodine-rich foods, especially seaweeds, can also help. …

“Fukushima is really a big problem,” Quijano said, adding that the effects may be worse than those suffered in the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear emergency. …

Thank you for all your posts, they are much appreciated. Since I use several of these supplements/foods daily normally, its nice to know they may be helpful with radiation. I don't believe you mentioned Beta 1,3, Glucans. I remember reading a good study regarding survival of mice exposed to lethal doses of radiation......70% survival I believe amongst those receiving the beta 1.3. glucan.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1229039

Thanks for a good recommendation.

I will be adding this to the foods category.

“The biological activity of beta-glucans”

“This review summarizes the recent knowledge about the positive effect of betaglucans on human health. Beta-glucans are polysaccharides occurring in the bran of cereal grains (barley and oats and to a much lesser degree in rye and wheat, in amounts of about 7%, 5%, 2% and less than 1%, respectively), the cell wall of baker's yeast, certain types of fungi, and many kinds of mushrooms.”

“Moreover, beta-1,3-glucans improve the body's immune system defense against foreign invaders by enhancing the ability of macrophages, neutrophils and natural killer cells to respond to and fight a wide range of challenges such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.”

“ Finally, there is renewed interest in the potential usefulness of beta-glucan as a radioprotective drug for chemotherapy, radiation therapy and nuclear emergencies, particularly because glucan can be used not only as a treatment, but also as a prophylactic.”

Thanks for your post!

I will add the antioxidant berries to the list.

Soy makes me a bit nervous because of the phytoestrogenic effect, especially in males, anti-thyroid effects, and Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) soy, (grown on 91% of US soybean fields) issues but I will look into it again.

[link to www.newswithviews.com]

Miso does contain soy, but it contains fermented soy. There is a difference between fermented soy consumed in the orient and non-fermented soy consumed in the west.

Fermented soy is good because the fermentation process removes the trypsin inhibitors, which hinder the absorption of nutritive compounds found on the coating of soy. Over the years, it has been observed that fermented soy products like natto, tempeh, miso, fermented soy milk and soy sauces have helped in reducing the hazards of cancer and improving nutritive bioavailability. Fermented soy protein also helps in promoting bone and heart health and reduces menopausal symptoms.”

“Do not confuse fermented soy protein with non-fermented soy like soymilk, tofu, soy nuts and soy protein isolates. These have anti-nutritive value due to their high phytic and oxalic acid levels. They can obstruct the absorption of crucial nutrients like calcium.”

Turmeric, basil, rosemary, ginseng, and green tea are already on the lists.

Garlic and seaweed are already on the lists as well.

One caution with seaweed, make sure it was harvested from a non-contaminated sea, or before the 3-11 disaster, as seaweed concentrates plutonium by 2,000 times.

I will do a bit of research on onions, and probably add them as well.
Many thanks for your valued input.hf

I have a new one that I will be adding, milk thistle (silymarin marianum)

"Evaluation of silymarin as a promising radioprotector."

"Silymarin, a purified extract of seeds of Silybum marianum L. and well known for its hepatoprotective abilities, has been evaluated for inherent utility as a radioprotective agent"

"A fraction (INM-7035) was authenticated by characterizing the percentage composition of silybin A and B (39.9% and 57.4%)."

"INM-7035 completely inhibited lipid peroxidative stress in case of membranes against supralethal radiation stress in the liposomal system. The ability of INM-7035 to modulate the levels of NF-kappaB, indicated its inherent potential as a radioprotective bioactive constituent."

[link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

"Silybum marianum or milk thistle (MT) is the most well-researched plant in the treatment of liver disease.
Silymarin acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation, has antifibrotic activity and may act as a toxin blockade agent by inhibiting binding of toxins to the hepatocyte cell membrane receptors."

"In animals, silymarin reduces liver injury caused by acetaminophen, carbon tetrachloride, radiation, iron overload, phenylhydrazine, alcohol, cold ischaemia and Amanita phalloides. Silymarin has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases."

I am adding a new supplement:

Hawthorn (Crataegus microphylla) fruit extract

"The radioprotective effect of hawthorn (Crataegus microphylla) fruit extract was investigated in cultured blood lymphocytes from human volunteers. Peripheral blood samples were collected from five human volunteers 10 min before and 1, 2 and 3 h after a single oral ingestion of 500 mg hawthorn powder extract. At each time point, the whole blood was exposed in vitro to 150 cGy of cobalt-60 gamma irradiation, and then the lymphocytes were cultured with mitogenic stimulation to determine the micronuclei in cytokinesis-blocked binucleated cell."

"The maximum decrease in the frequency of micronuclei-containing cells was observed at 1 h after ingestion of Hawthorn extract (on average a 44% decrease). These data suggest that it may be possible to use Hawthorn extracts in personnel exposed to radiation in order to protect lymphocytes from radiation effects."

I couldn’t really find too much on berry flavonoids for radiation protection, although they do a ton of other great things, but I did find this reference if anyone is interested. Dark berries contain extra flavonoids among other goodies.

[link to berrydoctor.com]

"Radioprotective effects of antioxidative plant flavonoids in mice."

"These results suggest that plant flavonoids, which show antioxidative potency in vitro, work as antioxidants in vivo and their radioprotective effects may be attributed to their scavenging potency towards free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals. Therefore, the flavonoids contained in tea, vegetables and fruits seem to be important as antioxidants in the human diet."

"Huge radiation release led to severity hike"

“According to TEPCO, at the time of the March 11 earthquake, 660 million terabecquerels of radioactive material was in the Nos. 1-4 reactors.

Comparing this figure with the calculation made by the nuclear safety commission and agency, about one-500th of the reactors' radioactive material has been released. This means most of the radioactive material likely is still in the reactors.

But where did the discharged radioactive substances go?
Atsushi Kasai, former senior official of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, said the material has three major destinations--air, soil and seawater.Of the radioactive material discharged into the atmosphere, including the large quantity released at the beginning of the accident, Kasai said more than half was probably still floating around in the air."

Mushroom season is approaching and I love morels. I posted this on another thread, but wanted also to add this information here as well.

“Guidelines for handling of mushrooms; Reduction of radioactive cesium”

[link to www.evira.fi]

“Radioactive cesium can be removed by soaking or boiling the mushrooms in water.
Most of the cesium is transferred into the water, which is then disposed of. This process can remove up to 70-90% of cesium.”

This is a really good PDF from Finland, dealing with the Chernobyl radiation issue. (Lots of mushroom hunters in Europe.)

Not to get off topic but milk thistle is also good for pulling mercury out of you so I guess it pulls out other heavy metals as well.
So you're kinda 'killing 2 birds with 1 stone'.
Vitamins C,E and B are all good for helping to remove mercury as well and are probably good for radiation (all the anti-oxidants are, no?).

You are correct,

I did find a paper about this, but it is Russian paper.

“LITOVIT” series of products (the name being a combination of Latin words “lithos” – stone and “vita” – life, that is “stone of life”), which were developed by the specialists of Research-and-Development Company ”NOV” located in Russia and are based on the standard constituent of the natural zeolite from the Kholinskoe deposit area - the active component clinoptilolite, have been produced for 15 years."

(Possibly some caution here, perhaps it is necessary to be careful about which type of zeolite is used:)

"After natural fibrous mineral was proven to be carcinogenic for humans and included in group I according to classification of International Agency for Research on Cancer and after the “epidemic” of pleura malignant tumors - mesothelioma and lung cancer – was discovered in several provinces of Turkey, which, according to the conducted studies, was connected to pollution of the environment with needlelike fibrous zeolite – erionite, the necessity of studying the carcinogenic activity of all natural minerals became obvious since other zeolites, such as mordenite, might have the same needlelike shape of crystals or contain some amount of such crystals."

"Starting from 1996 the Commission on Carcinogenic Factors formed by Health Ministry of Russia studied the materials of the natural carcinogenic agent laboratory of Carcinogenesis Research Institute at Oncologic Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences devoted to studying carcinogenic activity of the Kholinskoe deposit area zeolite (including “Litovit-M"). “The specified zeolite type did not show any signs of carcinogenic activity, which makes it possible to allow using the zeolite in food and medical industry(Statement No. K-9а/96 dated June 15, 1996). It did not show carcinogenic activity in rats who received it intrapleurally and intragastrically. “A tendency towards the decrease in the amount of spontaneous tumors among experimental groups of animals as compared to reference animals was registered” (Statement No. K-3а/02 dated March 26, 2002).

"The conducted experiment clearly shows the absence of carcinogenic activity in BAFS "Litovit-M", which is the Kholinskoe deposit area zeolite standard constituent, that is, powder containing clinoptolite. This fact allows using it as a biologically active food supplement as well as in the field of medical and pharmaceutical industry."

"Conclusion: “the agent is almost non-toxic when administered once or for a longer period and in larger doses to laboratory animals, no reasons to avoid using it in clinical studies as enterosorbent in its recommended daily dose 70 mg/kg (2.5 g a day: 1.25 g twice a day) were discovered."[/b]

"The studies have shown that:

1. BAFS “Litovit-M” has the most effective radioprotective properties in comparison with other sorbents enabled by stimulating washout of incorporated cesium, which decreases specific radioactivity of liver and the development of the organ destructive changes.

2. Using BAFS “Litovit-M” in cases of radiation damage decreases the activity of destructive processes in liver and ensures better liver condition as compared to other used sorbents.

3. BAFS “Litovit-M” stimulates pH-plastic potential of liver cells in case of radiation damage and ensures faster rehabilitation of this organ.

4. Using BAFS “Litovit-M” allows effective reduction of endogenic intoxication level in case of radiation damage, which confirms the necessity of receiving the agent in accordance with recommended dosage if radionuclides penetrated the organism.

The experiment of injecting radioactive cesium into the organisms of rats confirmed that the animals receiving "Litovit-M" demonstrated more significant decrease in radioactivity of all organs in comparison with the animals that did not receive the test agent. Radioactivity of their seminal glands was 40% lower; their brain radioactivity was 28% lower compared to the animals that were on a standard diet. Experimental data clearly demonstrate that adding BAFS “Litovit-M” to meals stimulates the removal of radioactive cesium most effectively in comparison with other sorbents.

GLP cut and paste rules resepcted.

Sorry this is a bit long but I wanted to give more of the pertinent information from the paper so people could draw their own conclusions.

Thanks for bringing this up.hf

I just want to remind people once again about spirulina.

" Doctors reported spirulina's health benefits for child victims of Chernobyl radiation. Spirulina reduced urine radioactivity levels by 50% in only 20 days. This result was achieved by giving 5 grams a day to children at the Minsk, Belarus Institute of Radiation Medicine."

This also looks like an interesting pod cast, but I have not listened to it yet.

"Today's guest is Dr. Christopher Busby and he is is one of England’s leading experts in low-dose ionizing radiation’s effects on human health and the environment. He is the director of the environmental consultancy group Green Audit, and the Scientific Secretary to the European Committee on Radiation Risks based in Brussels. He is also a visiting professor in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland. He has been a member of several large government committees in the UK government, including its oversight group on depleted uranium used in radioactive weapons in the Middle East, and the committee to examine nuclear emissions and their risks."

Re: **RADIATION PROTECTION**- non prescription list, revised and updated.
Thanks so much Emereld Eye! As a parent of two young children I am finding your post invaluable.

I too have been reading published papers from scientific jounals to try to find something that could help protect my kids. They already get a lot of apple pectin from the foods they eat and flax seed oil, lots of berries etc. I have been giving them kelp powder (about a teaspoon full) in thier smoothies for the past few weeks. I did notice tonight though that my son broke out in hives after eating a "smoothie" popsicle that I had frozen the last time I made them a smoothie. I really hope he is not allergic to kelp as he has had all the other ingredients in a smoothie before with no problems. This is the first time he reacted to having the smoothie though so who knows. His dad is allergic to fish. Hmmmm...

What else do you think I could give him for protection if he turns out to be allergic to kelp?

Thanks again for all of the wonderful information!
