ground deformation at el hierro, tenerife and la palma can trigger huge landslides which will cause huge tsunamis, at least in the canaries and maybe even ocean basin wide, but that is debatable

Thanks for explaining

The only thing I'd add is that deformation shows signs of activity, even when the seismograph doesn't. Slumping, in this case, represents a magma tube that has either emptied or somehow the ground itself has dropped in some significant way...possibly through the exit of ground water, oil, natural gas, etc.

When deformation reaches a certain point, land slides occur or sinkholes form. Some other things can happen as well, but this is most common. Now...on an island like Hierro, a slide can have devestating consequences. That's one reason why we're watching these events so closely.

guys! come on! that signal is not right! it can't be volcanic because all the other stations would show it, but they show NOTHING AT ALL!

it's a local signal

now what on La Palma could possibly cause a non volcanic signal?

Very strong rain here at the moment. The large Caldera gathers a lot of water that comes into one river called Las Angustias. These tremors are registered here. AVCAN reported this as well [link to www.facebook.com]

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

Historical tsunami events from volcanic sources in the Caribbean Region have been under-reported as the immensity of destruction from volcanic events has overshadowed them. Small scale flank failures are quite common for most of the active volcanoes in the Caribbean. Such volcanic sources have the potential of generating destructive local waves in confined bodies of water and in the near field environment of an open coast. Local tsunamis can also be generated by gravity-induced flank failures, even in the absence of eruptive triggering events. Heavy rains and earth tides appear to play a significant role in small scale flank failures of unstable volcanic slopes.

--------------------------------------------

it's a full moon tonight, la palma is having very heavy rain, a hurricane is about to pound new york, canada is being pounded by quakes generating small tsunamis

wtf else can happen?

Re: Best El Hierro Thread On GLP - Canary Islands - ACTIVITY HAS RETURNED - AGAIN!
You'll notice on the frequency charts that some of the islands picked up Canada's quakes quite well...while others barely registered it at all. We learned about 200 pages ago that this is because of large pools of magma beneath some of the islands. The magma pools stop the flow of the seismic waves and therefore don't show up on some island's seismographs or frequency charts. It's great way to tell which islands have the greatest amounts of magma beneath them.

It is not the first time we have heavy rain, normally almost every winter. And yes erosion happens and flanks do collaps but nothing "life threatening". There is no large hill or something that could collaps by rain. I am more concerned for the heavy wind predicted for the coming days, my mango-trees don´t like that.

Nope, see before, this is due to the heavy rain-fall, stations pick up the frequence of the water flowing through the barrancos. El Hierro had a lot of rain, still going on untill probably the weekend.
