Re: White House deluged with petitions for secession
How would Old Glory look with 30 stars instead of 50? As far-fetched as it may sound, the White House might soon be forced by its own rules to examine the question.

On Nov.7, the day after President Barack Obama was re-elected, the White House’s website received a petition asking the administration to allow Louisiana to secede.

If 25,000 people sign the petition by Dec. 7, it will “require a response” from the Obama administration, according to published rules of the White House’s online “We the People” program.

True secession isn't something you petition. It is something you DECLARE. YOU DON'T ASK FUCKIN PERMISSION TO SECEDE. You just do it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16764653

That can be said again.
Sorry thing is that this is exactly what TPTB want to happen.
The only way this would work, is if they all or most of them did it simultaneously and at the same time formed a new Union. OR form the new union and then let DC know that they have seceded.

It's better to go through a process of diplomacy. Just declaring it would likely lead to the full US military bombing and invading until they "reclaim" it back.

Re: White House deluged with petitions for secession
I also posted the following on one of the other related threads yesterday. Take heed:

>>>>>
Of all the talk and threads related to secession;
Most all of these are knee-jerk reactions that have not been thought out.

Until a proposed governmental structure (laws), revised Constitution (laws), and proposed means to address fiscal responsibilities and liabilities (laws) that would outline the state's continued operation separate from the US Federal Government and the protections defined by means of the US Constitution (as these states would surely now be at-odds with the US) - you have no idea what you're actually promoting.

This is akin to loading the family in the car for vacation, though no preparation, no packing of clothes/ food/ supplies, no determined destination, and not even a determination of direction of travel has been made. You are then traveling an unknown path, headed for unknown interactions that may well likely include many unforeseen troubles and calamities - and your family is now an integral part of this very dynamic equation. Just because there is fuel in the car doesn't mean you're prepared for the trip.

Many states are similar to my own (Colorado), in that the majority of the state is populated by working, keep-to-yourself, small government supporters. However, it is the few larger cities within said states (Denver and Boulder for example in Colorado) that overwhelm the representation of the state to be considered as a liberal one.

Of course, a majority of the citizenry are interested in returning to the "freedoms" we enjoyed in the recent past. The dangers are that, until specific language is recorded to determine the path, direction, and ultimate destination - you may well be trading off for another government that has even greater desire to influence and control your life.
 Quoting: ClydeX

It's true that what would happen after secession has not been thought out by most people signing these petitions

however, that has never stopped humans in the past from calmly embarking on all kinds of world changing misadventures, such as the last civil war, the First world war and the Iraq war

the problem is that reason has nothing to do with it when people get pushed far enough, are desperate enough or filled with enough emotion to override the desire to maintain the status-quo...or the status-quo is abruptly changed and the social contract renogiated without apparent consent

As a student of history, you can see all the necessary ingredients for combustion in the current situation...and building

It's not just in the USA however, it is clearly similar in Europe and probably brewing in China as well

I think 2013 will be the beginning of an extremely rocky era for these increasingly autocratic yet highly indebted nation states.

How they manage to contain restless populations while trying to balance their budget shortfalls should be interesting

Here's How We Know Beijing Is Terrified About Social Unrest

shit is real and global
 Quoting: IssueX

The Revolutionary War (the colonies' secession from Great Britain) was engaged AFTER there had been great discussion and determination of how such a new country would operate, even though the US Constitution was not formally adopted until years later. This was with great concern for the gravity of the actions which those were about to engage.

The Civil War (US) took place in a relatively small window of time after the adoption of the US Constitution, and secession of the Southern States was to continue operation under the guise of this Constitution without the interference of the Federal Government, specifically the furtherance of the 10th Amendment.

Neither of these were the "knee-jerk" reactions spun up by unaligned peoples. Much, much thought, consideration, weighing of the possible outcomes, and (I believe) prayer for direction were participated in before determination of moving forward with acting was made.

I fear what we are seeing here are people, although maybe well-intended, voicing their disdain for the .gov. But calling for secession on such a mass level without first defining goals, desires, attributes, resources, means of sustainment, etc., is short-sighted and ultimately dangerous to the populous of said states.

The states and their updated totals are: Louisiana, 10,296; Texas, 9196; Florida, 2392; Alabama, 2492; North Carolina, 2434; Kentucky, 1934; Mississippi, 1935; Indiana, 1951; North Dakota, 881; Montana, 1538; Colorado, 1805Oregon, 1594; New Jersey, 1492; New York, 1727; South Carolina, 117; Arkansas, 86; Georgia, 131; Missouri, 149.

The ability to create the petitions is something that the Obama administration promised and delivered on because:

“We want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.”

I can agree with you 100% re the US Revolutionary War...and it is one of the miracles of history...a revolution which didn't de-evolve into tyranny and counter revolution as most do

I love reading the writings and intelligent discussions between Jefferson, Hamilton, Adams and Franklin. We were blessed to have such rational and inspired leadership at that time

I'm not as certain about the leadership who led either the North or South into the abyss of the Civil War. Both sides thought the battle would be over in weeks and had no idea of the total devastation and incredible loss of life would follow

Same with the short sighted idiots who began the First World War, a war which accomplished almost nothing except kill off a generation of Europeans and set the stage for the rise of dictators far worse than any king

Same with the Iraq War, which the pundits said would be accomplished "surgically" in less than 3 months

Unfortunately, most humans are impulsive and emotional.

I think what sets the Revolutionary War apart from the others is that the founding fathers did NOT anticipate a quick and painless war...on the contrary they knew that it could drag on for years, and they were willing to pay that price

I am 100% in favor of populations reclaiming their rights, taking action which they feel is necessary to right the balance between themselves and their leaders...just as the founding fathers intended...and just as long as they are fully aware of the the extent of the price they may be asked to pay

I think most think they are ready, but ask Germans, Brits or Russians who were starving in freezing cities after the 100th air raid, whether they really thought this would be the result of voting for a particular candidate or supporting war against the 'enemy'

never easy choices...

Anybody who puts their name and address on the whitehhouse website for anything but fawning praise is just asking to be put on a DHS watch list.

Besides, those petitions are not coming from the states so they don't matter at all. Any real secession effort would have to go through the state legislatures and governors first and there would have to be a vote of congress. Not gonna happen. Hell, we can't even impeach the lying treasonous marxist in the Whitehouse. What makes anybody with half a brain think congress would vote to allow the states to secede?

the real tragedy is that we may be watching history being made as obviously some people people feel so frustrated they have to resort to extreme options like petitions for secession

I don't care if you are on the left or the right, whether or not you agree with the sentiment behind these petitions, whether or not you think these petitions will have any impact at all...this is different

I can't remember a single election in 40 years when the first reaction to an election was to see dozens of petitions for secession flood the White House

when Richard Nixon got re-elected, not when Clinton or Bush were elected the second time

2012...may be doomy after all

No sir, it's not an easy choice, and definitely one not to be entered into lightly.

In addition; no one alive today has ever witnessed fighting of this level within the bounds of the US. Living vicariously through movies, TV, or video games, and the romantic notions of "winning" for their home neighborhood, county, or state will have absolutely zero reflection or bearing should such events ever take place.

Not a good idea to sign any petition or sign up with any political group anywhere.

The problem is right in their own state.

Petition to DC will only send them a list of names of dissidents.

Please think twice before signing any document of this kind

I know someone who signed a "no nukes" petition in 2000...and after 9/11 found herself on the national No-Fly list. Everytime she went to travel, she was pulled aside for questioning, even though she had never joined any radical group, and didn't have a criminal record nor a foreign sounding name

she finally was told that people who signed any kind of "peace" organization petition or anti-war group were considered potential risks to the US military

right or wrong, thats the way it happens.

25,000 people is only one small town in one huge state. Let me say that I will immediately move to the first state that leaves the union honorably if that state has also legalized the recreational use of marijuana. I do not like being a criminal simply because I like to smoke pot. And it has been half of my life, at least 25 years since I've been proud to be American. Absolutely

Not because those men were cowards and hiding their convictions - but because those men were wise; they planned, they evaluated the potential costs, potential outcomes, and the operation of a newly formed nation should their efforts succeed - and this BEFORE the submission of The Declaration of Independence.

Their governing body of the time was also on a different continent, with only basic means of transportation (ship) and communication. There was no telephone, no email, no smart phones, no Internet, no twits twitting every move, and the weaponry was pretty much universal between the Colonists and Great Britain. What would be faced in our current society is far, far different, and should warrant far, far, more wisdom, thought, and consideration.
