Anonymous Coward User ID: 31243632 United States 01/19/2013 10:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes - there are parody & fake accounts on twitter....The GNC President & GNC PM both had people set up fake twitter accounts in their names (Zeidan & Magariaf) Anyone could pretend to be Rami el-Obeidi & Noman Bentoman... BUT - I've followed these specific accounts for over a year. I've seen them interact w/ prominent Midddle East journalists and then comments they've made have appeared in print. E.g. Rami often interacts w/ Rana Jawad from BBC & Jomana Kardesh from CNN. I've seen both men interact w/ prominent Libyan politicians. Rami has provided updates on breaking news in Libya that could only come from someone in the know. When there is a crisis, other prominent tweeters ask him for information. Noman often links to articles from his employer Chatham House - if he was fake wouldn't they shut account down? Most telling, the Libyan English language twitter community is rather small. They "out" the fake accounts quickly. These are the twitter accounts of Rami el-Obeidi & Noman Benotman... What's been sad to watch is all the cases in which members of the Libyan twitter community have been injured/killed. It's so common, it must be intentional. You've followed someone for a year who is just a catchy name & a flag (or other symbol); then you hear they are in jail (or dead) and you finally see their face. That's been difficult (and I have no connection to Libya other than twitter "friends"). Anyway, I feel confident that the tweeters I follow from Libya are legit... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 31243632 United States 01/20/2013 10:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is no future... From an interview with Israeli broadcaster Shlomi Eldar: A few days after the end of Operation Pillar of Defense, I gave a talk at a Herzliya high school. The children, who said they came from good homes, told me we have to kill all the Arabs, including the Israeli Arabs, because where do they get off thinking they will get control of the country. Their ideal is to go into the army and kill as many Arabs as possible. That’s one side of the picture, Israeli youth, the new generation, living in an atmosphere of demonizing the Palestinians, which is something the Israeli media are responsible for in no small measure. The other side of the picture is the young generation in Gaza, a child of five or nine. Let’s say he is not wounded, but a four-ton bomb landed next to his house. Do you know that in Operation Pillar of Defense, not one pane of glass remained intact in the whole of Gaza? It’s a tactic of creating sonic booms to frighten people without hurting them. A child who has a bomb like that land next to him can’t hear anything for the next three days. What does he think about the Jews afterward? And where will we end up, if this is how Jewish youngsters think about Arabs? Nowhere good. We are on a nothing-to-lose track. Which is why I say there is no future. ... You are very reserved. I maintain reserve all the time. As a defense mechanism? Yes. What does it defend you against? I safeguard myself, and I need to safeguard myself against a host of things. I will tell you something I have never told anyone, and I hope I will not regret telling you. During Operation Cast Lead I came into possession of material about very grim events relating to the idea that Israel was deliberately “going crazy.” Testimonies, images and much more. So many people were killed there. I took it all and put it in an envelope. I told Reudar Benziman, who was CEO of Channel 10 News at the time, what I had. He told me, “Work on it.” I told him I couldn’t. Because that’s the truth; I couldn’t. If I had verified what I heard, I would not be able to live with it. I couldn’t have evoked the “rotten apples” metaphor. I still have the material in a closed room. I didn’t give it to anyone. When there was talk about a commission of inquiry, I said I would be ready to give them the material & let them check it out, not me. I’m not touching it. I’m not capable. I can’t. I, too, understand my limits. [link to www.arabist.net] |
Crazy Harriet User ID: 9706870 United States 01/20/2013 12:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Someone just took one bag out of my garbage... Quoting: DarbyDoom We were on vacation last week (missed trash pick-up); so last night be took 4 full cans to the curb. Just before 6am a truck stopped in front of our neighbor's house. A man got out & walked to our trash cans. He selected one of the middle cans. He carefully removed the top 3 or 4 bags from the can (all of the cans are overfilled). Then he took one bag out & replaced the top bags. He took the one selected bag, put it in the back of his truck, and left. It was half-dark, so I didn't really see him or the truck that clearly. He was tall & thin, wearing a tan jacket, and he was wearing gloves... When he was doing it; I thought maybe he was adding his garbage to our garbage "the old dump & run". I wasn't watching closely when he first got out of the truck... BUT he clearly took a bag (one of our bags) with him... Why did he do it & what should I do? It would sound crazy if I sent a letter to Sen. Mikulski, right? I'm not sure what I should do... Sounds like someone used your garbage as a drop-off point. It would be pretty easy to place something in an unlocked can in a bag and describe this to another for later pickup. Since he stopped in front of the neighbor's house, he was probably checking house numbers and pulled over when he was close. Never thought of using a garbage can that way before, but it's not difficult to imagine. It would also avoid normal suspicions. Garbage bags are one of the very few containers that aren't locked down these days. The German missiles are expected to be deployed to the southern Kahramanmaras province by the start of February to defend Turkey's border with Syria. The Netherlands and the US have also each deployed two batteries to protect other stretches of the 900-kilometer frontier. A day earlier, 240 German troops landed in Turkey as part of a NATO mission aimed at preventing the Syrian conflict from spilling across the border. [link to rt.com] |

If anyone cared, this could be something, but I think we are all numb from the lack of action so far. Quoting: MIL MAN Numb is a good description. We are approaching 2 years since this all started in Syria. Still not sure if we are going to see some climatic event (Western intervention, FSA victories in Damascus and Latika, Assad assassination, coup, etc) that brings this all to an end or a continuing conflict which further grinds Syria into the failed state category. |
