Quoting: chowan yes lard is a much better choice and has more uses and in my opinion is more healthy for you I have a very large food stash but have n0 cooking oils. The cooking oils that I first bought went rancid long ago so I decided buying any sort of cooking oil was a waste of money. Anyways, I never did by lard. Do you know how long the shelf life of lard is? I guess the better question would be to ask how long does lard keep before it goes bad? dont know what it is officially but im using some now that is 4 years old.has had no special storage considerations just stored in the bucket I purchased it in and still tasts fine.I think it has an almost indefinite shelf life as long as you dont let the air or water get to it. OIL goes bad and quick. look it up if you think i am lying.. Try coconut oil. If it's extracted properly it'll last insanely long, just ignore the BBE, in most cases for a lot of things it's usually just plain wrong. It's VERY healthy too and should aid you in fighting infections/molds etc. There's just one problem; IT'S EXPENSIVE. But well I'm sure a lot of places could do you a deal for such a bulk order. And yeah beans/rice or noodles/veggies/oil/herbs and spice/salt and live like a king. It's basically what I ate everyday for years anyway! Apocalypse? No, I always eat like this! This should go without saying but remember to get a PROPER sea salt as you can do without the blood pressure problems and mineral deficiencies from chemical salt, I mean you'll have enough problems right? Just remember to mix a bit of kelp powder in the sea salt for the iodine. Oh and luxury. yes, I know you can't really rely on luxury in such a setting, but it wouldn't hurt to package away SOME food just for your mental pleasure. A treat to look forward to occasionally. It wouldn't last but it would help lead you into whatever hell you have to adjust to. Store a bit of food that is easy to store that you hate and would never eat. For trade, something you wouldn't mind trading. Hey, they don't have to know you'd have to be 3 weeks starving before you touched it! |

DoomingItUp User ID: 24284323 United States 01/18/2013 09:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I just can't believe how people run out of food. In normal times, I have at LEAST a month worth of food in my house. There is never a time where we have NOTHING to eat, but I have friends who constantly say how they are "out of food, not a scrap to eat, gotta get to the store!" How does that happen? How are you so irresponsible? I have 3 kids. I will never be without at least a month of food in my house. Sure, we might be eating rice and beans by the end of the month, but we could survive! And we have been stocking up even more...as of tonight we have about 3 months of food...bags and bags of rice, cans and cans of beans, mountains of peanut butter, and so on. It's really not that hard to keep some extra food around. It's irresponsible not to, ESPECIALLY if you have kids. |

Number One rule !!!! Good rule......never thought of that!!! Even better, just grab an extra can or 2 of tuna, or an extra bag or 2 of rice, every time you grocery shop. It adds up quickly and it's not like you are at a bulk shop buying 600lbs of rice at one time. So if you are using a card, it just looks like a normal trip to the store. After a month you have a bunch of extras that will last you if you need them. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 30804735 United States 01/18/2013 09:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | it makes sense that, in consideration of the number of people who were willing to turn in guns for food, that many Americans should try to keep at least enough food stored to survive at least one drought or other food crisis. Asking someone with little money to have tens of thousands of dollars in food is asking too much, but suggesting everyone have a closet, bed, storage bin, or some other place where they can at least go several days to a couple of weeks without going to the grocery store is a good idea. You should also avoid advertising your food storage to anyone but other food storage friends, and if you have something large enough to warrant talking about, you should probably plan on arming yourself to defend it. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1330824 Thats offical knowledge. One of Obamas Exec orders was for possessing peoples homes, vehicles, labor and foods, and water. During an emergency / martial law. All Im saying is w/o your guns you wont be keeping your food from them or fellow man. I dislike Obama and his policies as much as the next person but the exec orders that make "legal" the confiscation of food, water, labor etc did not start with him Bush i think maybee even before him. and that being said most of the food consfication will take place in the form of agriculture any company or person involved in agriculture is required to fill out an agriculture census listing all resources that could be aquired in a emergency. personal food storage will be very unlikely to be consficated and your guns would not help you very much against a trained equiped military unit. nobody is saying dont own a gun but without food and a large amount you will have nothing to defend. Single burner. Asian markets, 10 to 20 bucks. Store up on refills, also relatively inexpensive compared to other things.
