How Do You Make Coffee? Percolator, Auto Drip, or French Press?

i drip one cup at a time.

Your body is God's temple. If you drink coffee I hope it is decaffeinated. Otherwise you are defiling the temple.

Seriously, go do something productive.

I think the older methods, in some cases, are better then modern ones.....like percolators.

And my cast iron cookware.......that stuff will outlive me!

Auto drip

prefer percolator. Used to wake to the smell of my Grandmother percolating the morning coffee & frying bacon.

Yeah, well GOD made us with caffeine receptors in our nervous systems...specific to the molecule...so please go take your false religious guilt somewhere else.


We do fresh pour-overs here, using Melitta no-2 filter holders per cup.

This morning was the second time I've ever roasted my own beans, using a Nesco roaster.



You don't even KNOW coffee until you roast your own beans.

This thread is about coffee.

If you're finding coffee grounds in your perc, just use a filter, or select a more coarse grind of coffee.

You can even use regular filters and just punch a hole in the middle.

My Grandmother used to cut out pieces of cheesecloth to use as a perc filter. She could rinse & reuse it many times before cutting another. Cheaper than buying paper filters.

Tried many devices methods -

#1 set up

Coffee bean grinder, burr preferred, but even a cheap grinder works well. Current one cost $18. Target. Simple French press , stainless & clear glass beaker.

Grind beans shaking grinder to get better consistency.
"Good beans are critical"

Boil enough good water to preheat press & drinking vessels by rinsing.

Put coffee into press, plunge slightly, to ensure grinds submerged bellow water line.

Let coffee brew, when ready, plunge & serve...

Though the press must be rinsed after use it is the best device I have found, minimalist, robust & consistently produces good quality.

I"d like to hear how the french press is better then perc tho, what makes it better?

I'm tempted to buy one, but don't want to spend the money unless it's worth it.

... God also gave us the wisdom to make a good cup of coffee and he expects us to drink it!

It's time for the percolator...

Oh yes this is the best memory, my grandmother then fried the eggs in the bacon grease.

And she'd have cream in her percolated coffee and make me hot chocolate with real heavy cream.

I use heavy cream in my coffee today.

Oh yes! She also poured some bacon fat in the bottom of the baking pan when making homemade buttermilk biscuits. Soooooooo goood to eat!!!! Soooooo bad for us.

I make coffee with an ancient Kenmore coffee maker my dad gave me. I've had to disassemble and clean it a few times, but the thing keeps on going.

I like dark roast with a ton of cream and sugar, so I pretty much like being overpowered by the coffee taste as well as sugar.

I have a french press and I love it!!!! Having coffee from it as I type this

melita filters make awesome, strong cups of coffee. We grind organic dark espresso beans, and use an espresso machine. We like it dark and strong...and organic.

I had to use my french press once cuz the drip machine broke. It was like a whole different cup of coffee, its like it squeezes all dat coffee flavor goodness right on out dem grinds!!11

I vary a lot, depending on mood and location.

Everything from just cooking in a regular pot to espresso.

The regular coffee maker usually comes in handy when you get visitors.

However, my favourite method is the vacuum coffee pot.

Btw...some assface lost the filter, so I could'nt use the French press anymore. It was only 15 bucks at Acma though, so I'm thinking of getting a new one after seeing this thread.

Oh, and I've used distilled water for years and years...getting the most out of the beans without tap taint.


Then for some odd reason, one of the big bags we buy at Costco warned against it. Too funny. I cannot imagine why.


When people drink coffee I've made at home, they always say it is the best they ever had. (I know where better can be found, but at not less than $5 per cup...and my favorite coffeeshop is a five-hour drive to the UP in Michigan)


Anyone near Sault Ste. Marie is blessed to enjoy the Dancing Crane...but here in Detroit we are enjoying something of a coffee renaissance, no fewer than six new joints opened up in the past few years...and all are excellent.

I have a Universal Coffematic Perculator from the late 1950's. Copper plated version, that makes the best coffee. Still works like a charm and will probably outlast me.

It takes time to clean( unless that is a part of the coffee ritual.

Chemex!!! come on people, that is the best way....
