New Comet LoveJoy Discovered: Destination Unknown

Move the slide bars on either the vertical or horizontantal axis to change the perspective and you will see that the comet and earth are not on a collision course.

Note NASA's disclaimer at the top saying their orbital predictions arn't that accurate anyway, so it could be closer, or further away. Only time will tell. I'm going to keep an eye on this one.

Two sequels to The Legion of Space. ***[a] “The Cometeers.” A colossal disc-shaped cloud of shining green appears out of interstellar space. Startled astronomers of the thirtieth century refer to it as a comet, for want of a better name.

They make their way to the Comet, are captured, escape, and with Giles’s peculiar talent, penetrate the Cometeer defenses and find an invincible weapon.

“One Against the Legion,” its sequel, takes place several years later, when the Basilisk, a madman with a matter-transmitter threatens civilization. AKKA is useless against him, for his identity and location are not known.

Chan Derron, cashiered from the Legion and a hunted man—because the Basilisk has thrown suspicion upon him—is suspected of being the Basilisk.

His evasion of the Legion, plus interventions and false-trails by the Basilisk form the story. Giles Habibula and other Legion personnel play a less important part in the story, although Giles turns out to be an unsuspecting grandfather.

***The first story is fairly good old-fashioned space-opera, not quite up to its predecessor. The second story is really a mystery set in the future, and will not baffle the reader for a moment. The thinly drawn characterizations of the Legionaries are, at long last, becoming tiresome.

What if it was not a coincidence that this comet is named Lovejoy. I know about the astronomer that discovered it (that it was his name) But still. Coincidence ? What if the way the universe works is trying to tell us something ?

Green Comet Spotted Down Under

Comet Lovejoy (see photo), discovered recently by Terry Lovejoy of Thornlands, Australia, is on its way into the solar system. The existence of this lovely green comet was confirmed by John Drummond of Gisborne, New Zealand.

A green comet, you say? If you're a science fiction fan, I know what you're thinking - what about Cometeers?

In his excellent 1936 novel The Cometeers, author Jack Williamson recounts the story of what appears to be a strange green comet entering the solar system.

"Perhaps it's a comet." Still frowning, Bob Star swung back toward the observatory. "It looked like one - it was a short streak of that queer, misty green, instead of the point a star would show..."

Inside the chilly gloom of the observatory, Bob sat down at the telescope. Its mechanisms whirred softly, in swift response to his touch. The great barrel swung to search space with its photoelectric eyes, and the pale beam of the projector flashed across to the concave screen.

...He stepped up the electronic magnification. Vindemiatrix and the fainter stars slipped out of the field. The comet hung alone, and swiftly grew. Its shape was puzzling - a strangely perfect ellipsoid. A greenish football, he thought, kicked at the System out of the night of space - by what?

It turns out that they are seeing an alien force field millions of miles in extent, containing worlds enslaved by the Cometeers, an alien race of energy beings.

Sure, you're skeptical - it's just science fiction. Sometimes a green comet - is just a green comet; cyanogen and diatomic carbon in the coma cause the green color. But what if I told you this green comet is sneaking up from below the solar system?

Comet Lovejoy's orbit is almost perpendicular to the plane of the ecliptic. At present (20-Mar-2007), the comet is approaching the solar system from below, moving from southern to northern skies. Comet Lovejoy is expected to brighten to 7th magnitude (not quite a naked-eye object), at the point in its orbit when it is closest to Earth (.44 AU - about 41 million miles).

This sounds underhanded to me; it's just the sort of thing you'd expect from the Cometeers. Fortunately, the Aussies (and Kiwis) are obviously alert.

Comet Lovejoy is NOT ALONE!

I think (not 100% sure?) that comet broke into two body(pc's)? One of them might get closer to Earth than the other.
Again, I am just guessing. What do you think ?

Comet Lovejoy passes by very close to the Earth's orbital path and just ahead of us April 15, 2007 and we arrive at its flyby location around May 14/07 or about 1 month later. The comet is only .442 AU's away on April 25/07 at its closest approach.

The close approach of this comet could be why there are increased earthquakes and a recent sudden cold winter blast. Things could get interesting over the next few weeks!

What a load of crap. The mass of a comet is insufficient to affect the earth in any way, shape or form.

If such was the case, Mercury and Venus would have an affect on the earth - which they don't.

Yes! thank you. I don't know about two pieces, maybe but I'm betting there will be serious debris from this comet that makes it into our orbit.

April 15 is an interesting date for a near-Earth fly-by cuz it's conjunct the Black Hole *Hades*... which has always meant *the end of all humanity*. Russian scientists are watching it intensely.
