Why do Germans have no sense of humor?

I was there visiting with my friend to see her in-laws, and I noticed the people did not smile much in public, and when you eat, you had better clean your entire plate, I found that out the hard way.

Americans tend to be friendly and smile and say hi to people in public, but that seems to be taboo in western Europe. I lived in Netherlands and when you stand in the line at the grocery store, people do not even make eye contact with one another.

One day when my friend and I were staying at the inlaws who live near Frankfurt, we went with the German MIL to a furniture store. My friend and I saw something funny and we started to giggle, when the mother in law admonished us and told us to quit being silly. She was quite stern!

They don't understand humor. You need humanity and compassion to have a sense of humor. They are too busy working and getting ahead to care about the meaning of life.

They are just stiffs in general. They do laugh but it is usually just at someone's suffering. It is not very humorous.

They take themselves very very seriously.

Completely depends where you live, counts for U.S. and NW-Europe. Cannot imagine you will be walking through Manhattan doing a Crocodile Dundee waving at everybody. I live in a small village, and we all still say hello - out on the street and in the grocery stores. I work in the city, and -indeed- no-one does what you said.

I lived in Amsterdam and did my daily grocery shopping. Being very crowded there it would be difficult to say hi to everyone. The Dutch people I met and knew were very nice, I liked it there and the city was beautiful. I was sad when we came back to the states.

no kidding.. its so irritating to me when americans assume the whole damn country is the same as the town they live in. when the entire us is about the same size as all of freaking europe... but they dont think that the french or the germans or italians are the same.. even though their countries are all right next to each other.

because we eat to much Sauerkraut!

honestly.. my grandmother is german... she laughs all the time...
when i visited my great grandmother and great aunts and great great aunts and uncles in germany.. they laughed all the time too..

the people walking around half-naked in the streets laughed and smiled and were nice normal people(cept for the not wearing a bra part)

You others would feel German humor is absolutely strict.

Yes, they laugh upon destruction of their enemies.

Now in this days is not much left for Germans

to laugh about but they are prepared for the next laugh,
when the angloid leaders will fall, then you will be able to see them celebrating.
