if this happened in the uk, with the benefit of video to see what really happened, we would demand to know why the people there didnt do anythign to help. and charges would be brought against those who did nothing whilst able. even the tran companies safety would be questioned.

What if a man or a woman did reach down and try to pull the wobbly drunk up and out, and the dead weight of the drunk was too much to handle. He's not a little child. He's dead weight. Chances are, the drunk would pull you down in there with him, you lose your balance, hit the live wires like he did and then everyone watches BOTH of you cook.

THIS is what a power shutoff switch looks like. These are the ones in Toronto, located just on the inside wall of the subway tunnel, within arm's reach of the public platform edge.

Also note, these are APART from the brightly lit ones for normal public use.

These are the kind all subway stations have, at the end of their platforms, because it's a goddamn safety feature and the track crews might need them.

Well, I draw two conclusions:

1.) Each NYC platform does have a power shutoff switch, most likely at the far end and probably slightly into the tunnel where the maintenance access is. Although it may be in a slightly "off limits" area, it is COMPLETELY physically accessible. The clerk himself, a 62-year-old man, had to be able to sprint down the platform, find it, and activate it, all before the train arrived from the next station.

This would imply that it is accessible to anyone from platform level.

2.) The NYC transit company MTA does not want people screwing with it, so they don't bother to announce the fact that they exist, which is a HUGE safety violation... because pretty much every other goddamn subway line in the 1st world has them clearly marked.

Its funny all the comments people are making but what if this was your son? or a close family member? I always find it funny how people can watch a video of someone losing their life and make stupid comments like "the train was late" or "no sparks" or say "nothing disturbing in this video" I mean what a bunch of retards.

the argument is not the fact that they obviously didnt find the switch, its that they didnt even start looking.

She only held out the shirt and mentioned it to bribe him. She tried her best. She could not have handled him to pull him out.

UPDATE: MTA spokesperson Charles Seaton writes, "These switches are located in areas that are NOT accessible to subway customers. They are not on the station platform." And they're not accessible to the token booth clerk, either. Seaton declined to elaborate on their exact location, for obvious reasons.

I knew about it, the German guy knew about it, Hell everyone but you and one other person assumed there would be a power shutoff near the end of the platform.

Why do we think people should have acted, despite the fact some of you aren't aware of your safety features? Well let me explain... imagine some granny drives her Bandit off the subway platform, or gets pushed, whatever. Old lady with broken hip and a motorized cart are now on the tracks, and pose a significant safety hazard to themselves and any oncoming train.

Do you...

A.) Look for something to cut power to the tracks, or an intercom, or an employee.

or...

B.) Stand around scratching your nuts.
