Re: BREAKING - Texas Secession Petition just keeps growing and growing!
I'm from Texas. Native born.

I'm not completely sure which side I come down on with this "secession" thing. I haven't (yet?) signed the petition.

But just for the sake of argument I'm going to take the Secessionist viewpoint for a moment.

All you who are saying those Texans who are for secession are traitors, or spitting in the face of those who gave their lives for this entire country, etc., are completely missing the point. Of course, there are other points you're missing too, but let's just address those two.

1) The "traitor" thing. Nonsense. It is not in any way, form, or fashion Treason to advocate for secession. It is treason to take up arms against the country to which one owes their loyalty (or the whole "giving aid and comfort to those who do" angle). Even the founding fathers knew that. They also knew when such actions were necessary regardless, and wrote the Declaration of Independence about it. But, on balance, it is a moot point because the Texas Secessionists aren't - at least for now - advocating for war. They want a peaceful parting of the ways, which simply cannot be labeled "treason" by any thinking person whose opinion is worth listening to.

2) Regarding the "but patriots fought and died for this country!" issue. That's certainly true. A great many honorable men and women have died to secure our freedom and liberty. "But..." the Secessionists might say, "We want to secede to PRESERVE those self-same freedoms and liberties, to retain our American heritage, that the apparent mooching majority have just voted to give away." In this spirit the secessionists aren't spitting in the faces of our honored veterans, they are in fact carrying on the same good fight, to preserve those very things our patriots believe were worth dying for. The Secessionists aren't the ones turning their backs on those who gave everything they had to bring this country together, hold it together, and together defend it in its entirety - our country itself did that by abandoning those ideals, those freedoms, those liberties, all at the behest of liars and looters.

So who left who?

Again, I'm not entirely sure whose side I'm on here, meaning more precisely that I see many of the pros and cons on both sides. But let's be accurate, shall we?

You may disagree with the Secessionists - with their aims and goals. Heck, you may totally hate them. But that doesn't make them traitors or even disrespectful to those who in past ages fought against another group of secessionists.

Because THIS time, the Secessionists wouldn't be fighting for slavery. In fact the argument could be made they aren't "fighting" at all. But if we speculate that it will likely come to that, then make sure you know which cards are in your deck, and on whose side you choose to align. The Secessionists - the Rebels - of the Civil War fought (among other things) to preserve Slavery. Today's Secessionists would be fighting to preserve Freedom - to refuse the descent into the "slavery of all to all" that is Marxism at its very core.

I think this just might be bigger than people think. Their are a lot of angry people out there. Taxes no jobs or low paying jobs, gov. not doing their job, trying to take civil liberty rights away, like TSA agents, EPA agents, IRS, FEMA and all the others. Our 1st amendment rights our 2nd amendment rights, I could go on.

Having no say in the education of their children, laws that have protected criminals, that have money, corporations that have no allegiance to our country or the constitution, having more say than We The People.

I expected this to happen, why didn't most of you!
 Quoting: Daughter

Expected what, a bunch of internet petitions? Internet petitions are worth nothing. Ask any company, they never respond to one, because when anyone can sign with just a mouse press it means nothing.

I hate to encoruge this but the only way to get your government to do anything you'd need to write, in person, to them.

I wish them all the best. better to leave now before things really fall apart and I do mean things worse then secession.

dollars gonna break everything
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19534183

A few years ago I read this article in Forbes magazine

Read the quote in red, esp...an interesting throwaway in the middle of an article about Europe and their own debt problems which might force a breakup of the Eurozone or secession of several members:

Why Ireland Is Like Texas

[link to blogs.forbes.com]

"Texas started out as a republic and was independent for nine years. The treaty that made us a state allows us to either split into five states (wouldn’t that change the balance in the Senate?) or to leave the union, at our choice.

....Now, a thought game. What would happen if California and Illinois and New York came to Texas and said, “We think your taxes should double so that we can finance our debt, and please buy even more of our debt next year to pay for our unfunded pensions. Oh, and while you are doing that the Fed is going to print massive amounts of dollars (far, far more than they are now) and destroy the value of the dollar, so your Texas pensions will be worthless.

My guess is that my fellow Texans would look around and decide which Ranger to set on these guys, make it clear that this was not the ride we had signed on for, dust off that old treaty and work out an exit strategy.

....Understand, in the run-up to the recent election our sitting governor talked about secession.

I was in meetings with Very Serious Texas Politicians where secession was earnestly discussed 15 years ago – maybe over some whiskey, but with the conclusion that Texas might be better off without the crushing debt that was coming down the pike.

I hope they pay off their portion of the debt before they leave. Also, what is their plan for all the Federal land and assets in that state?

More BS from sore losers...

As a non-Texan I do think that Texas (and California) "could" survive as independent economic countries, whereas most others states, and even some entire regions could NOT. 25,000,000 people is clearly enough people for creating a country.

I will point out though with current Demographic trends Hispanics WILL outnumber Whites in Texas by 2020, and when combined with Blacks (about 12% of the population), the current minorities in that State will greatly outnumber Whites by then.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

[link to quickfacts.census.gov]

(per the data above Hispanics are increasing their overall percentage of the population by about .5% per year and Whites are losing a similar amount, .5%, each year ... mainly because the growth rate of Hispanics is running at a rate that is about 4x that of Whites)

If Texas would become independent then by 2025 or 2030 (as young people grow up and become voting adults) it would ethnically be more Hispanic than White even among the adult population (and even if all the illegal aliens were shipped home).

Are those almost screaming for Texas Independence (who I assume to be mostly White) prepared to be a Minority of the population in the country of Texas with Majority of that newer Country being Hispanic? .... or are they just trying to ignore the realities of Demographics believing that what is happening on the demographic front isn't really happening?

Please sign the Alaska Petition

Alaskans would like to be free of DC and enter into mutually beneficial treaties with Texas, Montana and other freedom loving countries. Alaska is chock full of oil, gold and other minerals but the Imperial Federal Govt has locked up 70% of the State and makes the other 30% nearly impossible to develop.

The deep under reason for the secession petitions are the great dissapointment of the people; tired of the same old fake let me fix the problem politics, there is a collective awakening, a realization that what seems to be a reality of government is no longer feasible as it stands. The opression has boiled-up to a degree of spill over in the kettle, empty promises are no longer bright yellow dafodils in the spring, the time to wake up is now, the pony has arrived and it is not going anywherenwithout savy warriors on the saddle, the next civil war-revolution is just around the corner, the movement has started and the nobody is not going to-stop it, the inner war will spread like a wild fire on overly dry sage bushes, be ready to choose sides, is coming sooner than you think...

Sorry, but people are just plain fucking stupid. Yea, how many people are there in the state of Texas? So just a few disgruntled white people are being childish and don"t want to play anymore cause darkie got elected again? So they make a petition to leave the USA. Great, fine in fact leave. But then the federal govt will come back on you for money owed on capital improvements from the beginning which will put Texas owing more than they are worth which it will default and then the USA will come and repossess all of the land anyway. But then they would have to settle with the Mexican drug lords that work for them on territory rights.
If you let go of your hate for another person and try to help the next man, then someone would be helping you. But no go ahead and be afraid of anything that doesn't look like you! peace

Truth is if the u.s federal government had a brain , they would see it as a plus. Texas could break away with LA . Give the states a year of military protection.Allow the states to build their own military's and control their own borders. It would allow the states to be removed from federal requirements on oil drilling, refinery production, etc.It would bring down the price of fuel in the u.s with trade. Because the states arent going to join any opec, or U.N bullshit.

But then again the federal government is trying to destroy the u.s not fix it. They are pulling for the one world government.

Interesting post. Let the non-border USA maintain its "open borders" philosophy and let the border states crack down and do what's needed along the border. In return, Texas gets free of the federal mandates.

The problem is, Texas is supposed to help pay the national debt. If they slip out of the union, they escape that. Remember that the purpose of the Constitution was to form a "more perfect union" making all states responsible for the national debt; before that the creditors couldn't really find anyone willing to pay under the Articles of Confederation.

Re: BREAKING - Texas Secession Petition just keeps growing and growing!
I fear that if they secede, Mexico will take them over....
Full circle? Karma? ha ha

General Dynamics used to have facilities in Texas. I think they built F-16's there in Fort Worth.

Texas Instruments is there.

NASA Mission Control is there.

Plenty of other high-tech and defense oriented stuff is in Texas. Ingenious Texans would find a way to apply this if needed in a border war.

Mexico wouldn't have a shadow of a chance.

Please sign the Alaska Petition

[link to petitions.whitehouse.gov (secure)]

Alaskans would like to be free of DC and enter into mutually beneficial treaties with Texas, Montana and other freedom loving countries. Alaska is chock full of oil, gold and other minerals but the Imperial Federal Govt has locked up 70% of the State and makes the other 30% nearly impossible to develop.

Quoting from the text at the top of the petition:

There is a commonly held belief across Alaska, that the US Constitution has been set aside, and other then ourselves, there are no protections to the liberty and freedoms we are to have as our continued inheritance since the formation of the Union of the "several States"

Hate to be a grammar nazi, but the bolded word should be "than". Good luck with the petition!
