Wish I could read the documents you linked. All's I can say at this point is that the Baltics were victims of big power geopolitics. It's independence was a pipe dream, and resistance to outside rule -- by either the USSR or Nazi Germany -- was not an option. I am sure many sincere brave patriots thought otherwise, and they paid with their lives. I used to have no sympathy for the Baltics, but I realize they could not have had the power of hindsight to make the right decision in their difficult situation. There was no right decision, and they lost. I dont really blame the Soviets either, as far as their reaction to save themselves from the inevitable Nazi attack. For them it was merely a front line buffer zone to slow down the invasion.

I realize today the anti Russian feelings are getting hot. I dont know exactly who is involved and why. I just hope that it isnt a resurgence of neo Nazis who wish to settle scores and veer your country off course (or perhaps a similar course as before). Lithuanians deserve better...

The dangers of the past are being brought back up. The ultimate irony of an age of digital wonders and endless information is that young people could be so enthralled with embracing elements of a destructive system without realizing the actual dangers (given all of the information available) that go along with it. Human gullibility is as much to blame as the natural need to avoid suffering.

These documents have numbers of people which is easily seen. Unfortunately the only translations available are in Lithuanian. What is mainstream knowledge here, in West and other countries is completely unknown or less known.

It is not anti Russian, it is anti Communist.
Lithuanian history was not going with Nazis and it isn't now. Similar claims are a result of propaganda intended to undermine the ones that were fighting and many of whom lost their lives in fight against communism.

Lithuania witnessed mass deportations, communist atrocities. This started resistance war in 1941-06-22 where Soviet army was defeated. Government was formed and independence restored. There is movie about it.

German army went without serious fight through Lithuania. Lithuanian government was not recognized, replaced by Nazi representatives and true intentions could be easily guessed (it is a long story). Lithuanian government sent a letter to Hitler that it is against Geneva convention to form military units in occupied territories, which was unprecedented (government was arrested for this).
Rosenberg policy took upper hand and made everything clear. Von Renteln wanted to form "Waffen SS", but Lithuanians refused to fight for foreign cause.

When communists finally came, it was the longest resistance war in Europe.
1944-1952(resistance leaders lost)-1965(serious military confrontation ended).
1971(the last fighting partisan surrendered)
1986(the last partisan that did not surrender died in Lithuania).

Lithuania was the first to break away from Soviet Union. Communists constantly spread lies and disinformation about Lithuanian resistance movement.

Aleksander Wat was a Polish intellectual, imprisoned by Stalin following the outbreak of the Second World War. His remarkable memoirs have been compared with Solzhenitsyn's work. Here, he recalls his time in Kiev Prison in the Soviet Union, where writing on the latrine walls provided the only truth in a world perverted by Soviet lies. Wat considers one of these pieces of graffiti which read: ‘A curse on whoever invented the name Corrective Labour Camps.’


‘A curse on whoever invented the name... ’ – anger about a name, the meaning of words, semantics. The loss of freedom, tyranny, abuse, hunger would all have been easier to bear if not for the compulsion to call them freedom, justice, the good of the people. Mass exterminations are not an exception in history; cruelty is part of human nature, part of society. But a new, third, dimension had been added that was more deeply and subtly oppressive: a vast enterprise to deform language. Had it been only lies and hypocrisy – lying is part of human nature and all governments are hypocritical. The rulers' hypocrisy can cause rebellion, but here any possible rebellion had been nipped in the bud once and for all. A lie is an infirmity, a disease of language. The natural function of language is to ascertain the truth, or truths. Lies, by their very nature partial and ephemeral, are revealed as lies when confronted with language's striving for truth. But here all the means of disclosure had been permanently confiscated by the police. Such things had been anticipated and attempted in history's darker hours, but this was the first time the ‘reforging of souls’ was carried out by the police on such a colossal scale, with such speed and such logic. Collective farmers dying of starvation were herded into films in which the tables buckled under the weight of food; under threat of death they had to believe that these banquets, and not their wretched poverty, their collective farms, were true and typical. Young enthusiasts sang rapturously:

‘I know no other land
Where a man can breathe so free’

while their fathers perished in the camps. But for souls that had not been reforged yet, nothing was as hateful as that total corruption of language. It drove them to their wits' end. It suffocated them like a nightmare, like a noose around their necks.

When I was at liberty in Russia, which by then had been pacified until it was like a cemetery, I saw some old people who risked their lives to shout out, if only once, that slavery is slavery and not freedom. That was to be a common thing later on in post-war Poland, even during the blackest years. I was one of that large number, and I paid dearly for it.

So in the prison latrines you could read the plain human truth about Stalin's Russia – there, and only there.

Kids have it to easy, they expect the government to hand them everything just like the current government does. They don’t get the one roll of toilet paper a week for a family of four and a line of 8 hours to get that roll concept, we hid reality from them to protect them, and it backfired.
