You know the worst part? We did this to ourselves by giving up our natural rights because we were so ready to accept the pat answers post-911. The Patriot Acts, the TSA, the drones, the video surveillance, and now here we are, decorated war veterans are the "enemy". Talk about Twilight zone. We're living in a repressive Orwellian police state.
 Quoting: Don'tBeAfraid

Correct.

One born collectively of Americans' own apathy and naivety.

Freedom is not free. It must be seized and jealously guarded.

But since most Americans have forgotten that truism, they will inevitably be forced to experience what life is like without freedom in order to realize what they have allowed to be stolen from them.

As was said, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. It's happening right now.

This is a communist country now. You all need to accept this, and support any discipline this criminal is sentenced with.

Your words will have zero impact of the transformation of this republic. You enslavement is no longer inevitable, but a fact of life now.

Just go along to get along, submit yourself fully to those in power, and your life will be simpler.

Have you actually seen the people of Belize?
The west coast of central america is run by drug gangs.
Violent drug gangs with no limits and no fears.
Why do you think a multimillionaire like MacCaffee was so gun and security crazy?
You may not be so happy to be there on your own, alone with no connections and no friends and 2000 american dollars just begging to be made into installment payments on ransom or protection from the local gangs
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1310640

I think you've gone overboard with that post.

I live on the west coast of Central America in a large city where the violent crime rate is very low. It's much safer to live here than in a city in the USA.

In fact, the poster would do well to consider Panama over Belize. The infrastructure here is much better.

We have a state of the art John Hopkins Hospital here, an international airport, large fancy malls, a multitude of nice restaurants, bars, and clubs, wine festivals, casinos, a major venue concert hall that attracts bands like Metallica, a large American expat community, a private banking sector that rivals Switzerland's (admittedly not as private as before, though if you have Panamanian residency, you're protected), and you could still live well on $2000 a month (probably not as well as in Belize, though it depends on your definition of living well).

To my understanding, it's just been made much easier and cheaper for Americans (and Europeans) to get residency here. I think if you're bringing in $2000 a month (and this is certainly true if it's a pension), you'd qualify. Check with an immigration attorney to be sure.

Also, to the poster who is considering moving to Central America, you must beat that drug charge, or you aren't going anywhere. You will be required to prove that you are not a felon before any country will allow you to immigrate there.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31625978

If he does get stuck with a felony record, then while permanent residency and citizenship will be very hard to get without knowing the right officials, he can still expatriate by becoming a permanent tourist. The limitation would be that he'll have to leave whatever country he is staying in from time to time to reset the timer on his tourist entry visa or stamp. And, he'll likely not be allowed to stay in any country more than 180 days out of the year, no matter how many times he exits the country. So, he may need to have 2 or 3 countries to stay in over time. But it's easy to do when most countries of the world are no bigger than a US state.

So, perhaps Belize and Panama would be good choices if he has the funds to regularly travel back and forth between the two. Otherwise, perhaps Belize-Guatamala, Belize-Mexico or Panama-Costa Rica or Panama-Columbia, etc. would work.

Re: War hero arrested in NY state and charged with 5 felonies for possesion of 30 round magazines
If it was a 30 round mag that was not pre-94 ("pre-ban"), I think it was not legal before the new NY law either. So there would be no grandfathering, no time to sell out of state.

I don't know what burden of proof there is about whether a mag is pre-94 or not.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33389306

The sad thing is, I believe most magazines before 1994 did not have dates or serial numbers stamped on them. So, if they tell you to "prove it's pre-ban", I think most people cannot, unless maybe they still have receipts for those dating back to that time that have not faded by now.

And they know this. It's just a game to them. A deadly game.

Smart thinking. I had not thought of that. It would not be the most convenient way to live, but it would be doable. With the right attitude, it could even be fun.

A single man could pull it off. I don't think it would be as easy for a married man or very safe for a single woman to do though.

Last spring they were throwing a banquet in this guys honor attended by 400 people including a 2 star general.

9 months later he's facing 5 felony charges for being caught in possesion of 5 30 round magazines at a "registration check" road block.

Find the name of the prosecutor who is pushing this and post it online for everyone to see. These people who go after vets like this and not the rich media liberals, for something as stupid as a magazine, need their names and addresses brought out into the light.

OMFG, as a veteran of the Army and having served most of my time in Fort Drum, NY myself.....this is an absolute outrage! I guarantee the magazines that he had in his possession were issued to him when he was in the military, they do not expect you to return them when you leave the service. I can't tell you how many I still had in my possession when I left FT. Drum, but thank God I didn't remain in the area. This is a straight demonizing smear campaign on this Vet, how many more will be treated the same way in the Watertown/FT. Drum area? This can't just go silently into the night, we have to blow the doors off of this one any way we can!

"Magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds and manufactured before 1994, which are currently legal, would have to be turned over to authorities or sold out of state within one year. If a magazine has a capacity between eight and 10, it would have to be retrofitted to only hold seven rounds."

So how legit is this story? I checked and confirmed. Unless 30-round mags were already illegal in New York, he had every right to still have them until the year is up, right?
 Quoting: ifSHTF

Sounds as if they are only giving time to mags manufactured prior to 1994...when the Clintoon "Gun Ban" went into effect...

Really doesn't matter though...the "Law" that Governor Cornhole signed into law will more likely than not be challanged and found to be unconstitutional...possible that this mans case will become that challange case...hopefully after that happens he will sue the snot out of everything and everyone.
 Quoting: SHR

Best I can figure, the INTENT of this crazy NY law was to end up at SCOTUS. The libs are hooping for a broad opinion that will outline the limits of the 2nd Amendment.

Then they'll write a Federal law that goes up just to those limits, that's as restrictive as possible while having the explicit recent approval of SCOTUS.

I hope any court, including SCOTUS, will write a narrow opinion saying simply that these mags were grandfathered or reasonably believed to be grandfathered, end of story. Don't give the Feds an outline of how to write their law.

Ugh, sickening that they've done this. This'll piss off a ton of people not to mention would probably make people think twice about joining the military if it's come to this.
Sounds like they really are wanting to push us into revolting because it will come to that if they continue to pull on pulling this kind of shit.

I mean why protect the government if they're only going to turn around and criminalize you for practicing your rights?
Because this guy did protect this country and it's government and yet he's not allow to practice his right to own a rifle?

I highly doubt this guy is even a danger to the public. He doesn't seem to be the type to use it on some innocent bystander. He probably keeps it as a form of protection or even as a hobby.

Let me get this straight.

The cops searched his car, probably on a fishing expedition.

They didn't find the gun.

They found the magazines.

So he was arrested for having ammunition in his car?

What kind of crap has been going on in NY anyways?

Watertown is a rural area.
 Quoting: 13th-Century

To my belief it's not ammo that got him arrested, it was the gun MAGAZINES themselves, I'm guessing their cracking down on high round magazines, specifically for AR's.

*edit* nevermind, scratch that.

january 1st New York / Cuomo and his cronies banned all large capacity mags and AR15's..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33359272

quomo's "NY safe act" was signed into law jan 15th so this pre-dates it.

theres so little info, but im assuming that his magazines were POST BAN.

the clinton assault weapon ban never expired in NY. high cap mags are legal if they are PRE BAN meaning made before 1994.(until jan 15th 2014 then they are felony to have in NY)

maybe this guy had 5 "p-mags" or some other plastic mags that werent even made before 1994 or something IDK.

the burden is on the state to prove a magazine is post ban, most mags dont have any dates on them.

if not, then this is a gross abuse of the law and a clear violation of civil rights.
