Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
At the end of the day, Linux will only become popular if industry standards change in support for other operating systems.

That's just the way it is. Either that, or computers become so fast that you can run any program, or game, you want in a virtual machine, or in wine.

I don't run to anything. The reason I don't use Linux is for the obvious answers. It's simply not supported enough. Its manual complexity is nothing to fear.

I'm not sure what you mean, though. Gimp is nothing compared to Adobe Photoshop. Trying to compare freeware to torrentware is a bit silly.

Linux is not supported enough for well over a decade.

You mean companies like Google? Steam?

Not to mention the old way companies are going to get eaten by the web. With the advent of web based office software (Google Docs, web hosted MS Office, and many comptetitors enabled by technologies such as Objective-J and Cappuccino), plus the advancements towards web based software similar to PhotoShop, and anything else. It's no longer going to matter what OS you have because your apps and services will be largely web based. So yes, on the contraire to your statement, the companies that stay staunchly native Windows will be eaten alive and I will happily toast to their demise.

I will admit that Linux is great for people looking for basic computing. It's considered more secure for its scarcity in the Internet world. Most people don't use it; it's free; and there is a lot of open-source software to download for free.

Other than that and servers, you're just touching yourself.

If you want to test out some different Linux distros before jumping on board, you can just download "VMware Player" or "VirtualBox" for Windows and run whatever distribution of Linux on a virtual machine. You can test it out and see if Linux suits your needs.

I'm not going to explain the instructions to set it up but a quick search in your favourite search engine for "vmware player on windows running linux" should get you started.

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
Have resurrected two laptops using Linux in the past few weeks. It all started with an experiment on a dual core android TV stick and side-by-side comparing it to the Raspberry Pi. Great gadgets in the 35 to 50 USD range to mess around. Got Debian running on one of my generic 7 inch tablet PC and Picuntu on a Rikomagic.

Anyways, long story short - found the Puppy Linux to be apt choice for a 15 year old Pentium II Toshiba Satellite (yup - you heard it right 266 MHz processor from 1998) and the Ubuntu 12.10 for dual boot on a ten year old Toshiba satellite running XP.
I personally preferred to resurrect these lappies from the basement where it has been put away for all these years) because one doesn't have to worry about any remote Camera crapware (see article link below) on them because these were made way before webcam became standard on all laptops.

Kids are not too happy because their gaming sites do not support any other OS apart from WinDoze, but that works to my advantage because I now have them developing their own coding experience using scratch and Kids Ruby. Next is going to be Lego Mindstorm with RobotC

I see that dingbat came back. Hey, if all he is comfortable with is Windows or Mac, then that is all he is capable of. He's obviously the kind of person who demands everyone think exactly the same as he does to help validate his own inabilities. He clearly knows next to nothing about computers, so don't bother taking him too seriously. It's like some random asshole disagreeing with a medical decision - thanks, but leave that to the people who actually know what they are talking about. Case in point - " It's considered more secure for its scarcity in the Internet world". No, it's actually quite prevalent in the internet world, what do you think 90% of web hosting occurs on (along with FreeBSD)? It's more secure because until just recently, Microsoft still couldn't figure out that you needed to separate system files from user files. Not to mention "Linux is great for people looking for basic computing". Really...and how many supercomputers run Windows lol? It's obvious this dude is one of those poorly educated "experts" who makes us all look bad :)

yep /home is the base - you can do that in win but... thats a secret rockon
I have most things in win portable (even my folders) so my install takes max 20m (updates are integrated and basics predefined so I just install and my win is ready to go but that required a lot of practice before I learned it)
linux has it as its base and is xtimes easier - now the GUI can operate everything so the command line argument isnt valid anymore

at one moment I was wondering if he isnt some MS employe
lmao

edit - and it is supported
there are drivers, software etc
there is even LTS (long term support)

I sort of wondered that about him also lol...but more likely, he is the kind of computer guy we have in my area - a self-professed "expert" who I usually end up cleaning up after for half the price. Anyone really knowledgeable would have at least tried to use Linux, just to have the knowledge base to work from. Again, I am a FreeBSD guy for crying out loud, but that doesn't mean I don't have Macs, PC's and a Linux box running as well - especially when dealing with other computer users, you have to know the ins and outs/pros and cons of everything. That is why I can safely tell people Linux is a wonderful solution - I know what's involved on each system and what each is capable of.

As a matter of course, however, I do not usually recommend FreeBSD unless someone really wants to dive in and learn every little detail thoroughly - it's a couple hours before you're even out of the terminal if you compile everything yourself. It's like cars - most people want to buy one, some of us want to build one lol.

Start with a VM. The manual is super-detailed and extremely accurate. It's fun because you basically build your "distro" from scratch, choosing every single component you desire to get a really streamlined machine. It requires a lot of patience, and I love Linux, so I am not trying to start a flame war at all here, but it's a lot like Gentoo without (in my opinion!) being as difficult to set up. The end result can be more or less the same too, virtually everything is available for both systems.

As for repairs - one place here charged my landlord $350 to "clean up" his system. The simply reinstalled Windows with a bunch of extra garbage of theirs, wiped out all his Access DB's, software and pictures, handed it back to him, and ignored his phone calls. Luckily some kind previous tenant at least backed stuff up for him prior, so I was able to dig it all out and restore it for around $60 lol. Oy. Of course, the people in this little town have barely discovered cell phones, so I am not surprised :)

I will admit that Linux is great for people looking for basic computing. It's considered more secure for its scarcity in the Internet world. Most people don't use it; it's free; and there is a lot of open-source software to download for free.

Other than that and servers, you're just touching yourself.

That was in reference to end users -- obviously. I would recommend Ubuntu for grandma. My arguments for not using Linux were quite clear. There's a lack of driver support, lack of software support, and a lack of PC gaming support.

This is going to be heartbreaking, I'm going to say it anyway, most software for Linux is really unpolished -- granted, it's free and independently made.

WINE is far from perfect, and running virtual machines for resource intensive software is just stupid. I will admit Maya runs natively in Linux, and that's pretty cool, now Adobe, Discreet, and every game developer... Linux has come very far, I mean very far. It can literally be installed easier than Windows at this point.

In the future, the speed of computers will nullify the lack of performance in virtual machines, making this entire argument meaningless. At that point, it just won't matter. What will come first, support or processing power? Maybe they'll both come at the same time.

It doesn't come down to difficulty, if comes down to reality. If you want to sit on your toilet seat to get everything working just the way you want it, great. Most people don't want to live that way. If you're an awesome programmer, great. You can, for free, sit on your toilet seat and program your own drivers, and absolutely go nowhere.

Your post is out of anger, and it shows for the lack of ignoring details, like the fact I wrote that it was good for servers. Your post ignores that all together, because you point out "what do you think 90% of web hosting occurs on (along with FreeBSD)?"

This last post shows an inherent understanding of the arguments you put forth and gives us a good ground for logical discussion. I had given up because your previous posts were light on info, high on ego, and we've all seen plenty of that elsewhere on the web. I look forward to debating you a little further now - but I currently have to root out some bizzaro problem happening with a friend's hosting platform...so I will return when once again I can procrastinate for a few minutes lol..

And you might note, I have actually agreed with on a few posts back a couple of pages. I wouldn't want a client-based editing suite running anything but FCP or Premiere Pro natively, and frankly, as great as some of the Linux and OS music creation software is, there still isn't much choice but a PC or Mac right now for solid studio work. I do believe that will change, but has not been a huge focus of Linux development until the last few years. Blender on the other hand, sorry, but it is easily as capable as Maya or Max...I know because I've done broadcast work with it for 6 years running :)

Re: Linux is AWESOME!!!
the thing is
you say there is no driver or software support..
its not true
you have drivers in any out of the box linux installed - you dont have to install em
you can install additional but it all works fine with generic

games and programs run
I played everything from WoW to Skyrim on my linux without any problem
and modern machines can handle VM and Wine

you have programs that can do the same as your adobe or whatever but if you really think you NEED to use those then they also run without any problems - I tried them

I know a lot of ppl who think the way you do - I showed my few friends on my or their own machines that it works and they now either run dual OS or some even switch to linux

we have 2013 - the MS dominating desktop market is only due to the lack of knowledge
