Please stay on top of it! I had stage I melanoma 11 years ago and here I am. I was told that the melanoma was gone and I was good to go, obviously not.

Did some research and it looks like tons of people get recurring melanoma sometime in the lifetime. Don't skip derm appts. and if a dr. says don't worry about a mole and wont biopsy it go to another doctor.

So glad you had a good outcome..you're right. If that wasn't taken care of you wouldn't be posting here right now.
 Quoting: geminilion

Do you mind if I ask the details of your stage 1? Mine was 1a, no ulceration/mitosis. .35 Clark II
I recently had to see a surgeon about a groin node, and he said melanoma is in the top 5 things that scare him most as a surgeon. Basically said they are finding now even the most unassuming ones are metastasizing. Mine was in 2010.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55079802

I didn't get much more info. except stage 1, I know it didn't permeate a deep layer. They did the wide local incision and sentinel node biopsy and everything turned out clear.

The mole was on my right collarbone. Now my Dr. says that even though they thought they got it all one or two cells went rogue and just kind of hid in my body and his words "exploded and just went crazy attacking my organs"

So, it wasn't due to anything I might or might not have done. No visible, suspicious moles, nothing except being really tired all the time.

I couldn't give my brother a kidney, give blood or tissue to anyone due to my just having melanoma in the past. I know there were some Swedish studies that prompted the medical community to exclude those with a history of melanoma from donating anything.

They found cases where there were organ transplants that made the beneficiary of organ, tissue, blood actually get melanoma and die...that's really something to look at right there.

So my friend, I hate to say it, but don't ever get too comfortable with this. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

That is so damn scary. They did nothing except wide local excision. No node mapping, nothing. I think I have has about 5 MRIs in the last year for mysterious lumps appearing dipping the tissue on my leg. Same leg as the beast. It was on my foot. I can actually be over zealous, but I figure it's my life right?

Is there any way you can get a PET scan? Do you think your Dr. is doing enough given that you've had melanoma? There are many melanoma sites with lots of information and with people that know a lot more then I do.

Here's a good one, the people there are very up on things:

No, I've tried to get a pet, but I was told the only way I could have was when I was first dx. And thanks to the ACA we lost our ins, and cannot afford what is available now. Not sure what are going to do.

ACA has happened to a lot of us. Stay strong and stay positive. It's the best advice I have been given and sometimes the hardest to follow.

Of all the people I have met or talked to that have dealt with cancer related illnesses, there has been one common theme. The ones that made it through chose to do so. The ones that didn't also made their choice. Of the successful, some praise chemo, some praise a naturalistic approach. All praise God.

Thank you for that. While i'm not the one going through the treatment myself, I do have to make the decisions for my daughter. It's one thing to do it for yourself. A whole other ball field when doing it for someone else. I'm constantly asking if I'm doing the right thing, but also relying on faith that I'm led in the right direction.

Please go to the site I referred you to, someone there may be able to give you advice. Or, find another doctor/derm to take a look.

Here's a thought, try medicaid, the worst thing they can do is say no. It's worth a shot anyway.

Thank you. And for you. hf

For the 10 months prior to her diagnosis, she had gone to the dentist several times. He said it was just a canker sore. It ended up being cancer of the tongue and neck. She went into surgery a little after 8 this morning, and is still not out. They were also going to be doing reconstructive surgery at the same time.

I was told that after she has been in ICU for 2 weeks and then recovered at home for 2 weeks, she will have to do radiation and chemo.

All I know, based on other family members who have had cancer, is once they cut you open, it seems to make everything worse...
 Quoting: AnonymousGirl

Damn dentist! They are trained to spot things like that. We have so much confidence in the medical community that we wont even question what they say.

I'll be thinking of you and your sister with lots of prayers. Poor thing is going through so much as are you. If you can please report back and let us know how it goes.

She has many, many weeks of healing in front of her. Hang tough sister.

hf
 Quoting: geminilion

Thank you. She's my first cousin, her dad is my dad's brother. I can't even imagine if she were my sister. She got out of surgery a little after I posted my last post in here. Almost 12 hours in surgery :(I think my mom may have the ICU (2 weeks) thing mixed up. She will be in the hospital for 2 weeks. The doctors told them the cancer was massive...from the bottom of her jaw to the bottom of her neck. Because she is anorexic they had very little to work with for the reconstructive surgery.

I am just glad she made it through the surgery. We knew it was going to be intense, but because she isn't in the best of health to begin with, I didn't think she'd pull through. Thankfully, she did. Now, it's one day at a time.

I honestly don't know where people fighting this disease, like you, find the strength. And from what I read, it sounds like you don't have a lot of support which must only make it that much more difficult.

hugs
 Quoting: AnonymousGirl

Getting through the surgery was a blessing but from what you describe she's going to have to be really proactive as far as doing what she has to do to heal.

Eating right, etc. hopefully she'll have the will to do it. No matter how much support she has at the end of the day she is going to be the one to use her last ounce of strength and will to get better.

My daughter and son are here temporarily to help but my son's leaving tomorrow and my daughter is leaving in a few weeks which leaves me with my youngest so who I hate to say it is being a little shit towards me.

I don't know if he's in denial or what but he's avoiding me and being a jack ass, just being honest here. we'll see what happens. I have family but they are kind of far from me.

I tried to have a talk with the son who is leaving tomorrow. He told me that there's no way I am going to die so he's not worried about it.

I've noticed how people react differently to my situation. I have friends that completely avoid me, or not. People either stare at me (due to baldness LOL) or avert their gaze.

It is kind of fascinating. It doesn't bother me, people handle things in different ways.

Please keep coming back to let us know how it goes. I was thinking of you and praying that the surgery would be successful.
 Quoting: geminilion

Maybe for your youngest son, it is just anger at the disease? I know sometimes when I'm really hurting, instead of showing the hurt, I show anger.

You are a very strong person. hf

Thank you for your prayers. She should be out of ICU in about 4 more days.

What a long road she has ahead. Still praying, poor kid is going to have rough time. I can't imagine what she's going through.

I know she's knocked out for now but she's going to need all the strength she has to live through this never mind trying to build a life again.

I guess her caregivers/doctors know of her other issues?

While the ill or disabled person comes first, it is wise to be kind a good caregiver.

I took care of my Mother for over 13 years after she was suddenly paralyzed, her dilemma became my own.

Behind every good support systems are the lives of people who need support too. I often felt a loss of identity that only one going through it can truly understand.

I miss Mom more than anyone should , she became a part of me and me her.

With all of the hundreds of cures I've seen people post for a cure it would be impossible to choose just one. It's hard enough to figure out what to do and of course everyone wants a cure.

What I'm doing now is working for me so I'm going to stick with that.

Thanks for posting.

Your mom was incredibly blessed to have you! Lots of people go the nursing home route, some people have to. Lot's of cultures have a family system where everyone takes on a share of the load, in America, not so much.

It's incredibly hard especially for 13 years! You are a very special person, no doubt. I took care of my mom for a few years so in a small way I can understand where you're coming from.

I am really in awe of your commitment to your mom, it takes a special kind of person to do that for so long. And being paralyzed your mom had a lot of needs, you were her life line in more ways then one.

I hope you fight this and win. hf

My cousin goes in for at least an 8 hour surgery on her neck today. She already had surgery and was told there was a 15% chance it would come back. Well, it did..the size of golf balls she was told. The doctor told her as he was talking to her, it was growing. The last time, they removed part of her tongue, and will probably have to do the same again. She will be in ICU for 2 weeks. My cousin has also been an anorexic and alcoholic since she was 15 so she has never been healthy. I don't know how she will survive, but I pray she does. I have a lot of negative history with her, but I think it has finally hit me. She is 36.

Just wondering how your cousin is today? I know she's still in ICU.

You're in my thoughts.

No, I've tried to get a pet, but I was told the only way I could have was when I was first dx. And thanks to the ACA we lost our ins, and cannot afford what is available now. Not sure what are going to do.

Please go to the site I referred you to, someone there may be able to give you advice. Or, find another doctor/derm to take a look.

Here's a thought, try medicaid, the worst thing they can do is say no. It's worth a shot anyway.

Re: Support thread for those with cancer, terminal illness, or any life altering physical ailment. For caregivers as well
...

 Quoting: AnonymousGirl

I am sure you're right but it still hurts my feelings.

What a long road she has ahead. Still praying, poor kid is going to have rough time. I can't imagine what she's going through.

I know she's knocked out for now but she's going to need all the strength she has to live through this never mind trying to build a life again.

I guess her caregivers/doctors know of her other issues?
 Quoting: geminilion

I can understand, and he really should put that aside to be there for you. I hope he comes around.

I know. :( I'm just afraid because of where the cancer was on her body and how big it was. The first time they operated, they obviously didn't get it all. After the first surgery, they didn't give her chemo or radiation. Now, they're going to give her both. She's so weak to begin with.

Her family knows. The anorexia is obvious so I'm sure the doctors are aware of that, and I would guess they also know of the alcoholism, but I'm not positive on that one.

This thread was a great idea, Joannie. It's such a help for people to be able to talk with others about these things.

I second that. This thread actually gave me great comfort. Thank you again Joannie. hf

Godspeed that it's nothing to worry about. Please let us know how it went. You may want the support or if you need help researching we can do that to. I hate to speak for everyone but I feel confident that the people in this thread would be more then willing to help you.

Have you been feeling unwell? Or just something the docs came across.

Hugs and prayers...

I have to tell you, that makes me so angry! There's people out there that have never pain one cent in taxes or anything else and get a full ride.

You should be able to get whatever care you need. Don't want to turn this into a political thread but it does come into play for many, many hard working Americans who need help.
