Awww, Mama. You're such a good person. Your story brought happy tears to my eyes.

That dog would have been killed. I hope they do something to prevent it happening again. I'd be so ashamed and grateful if that happened to me. Not going to criticize them because I don't want it coming home to roost. I'd have a heart attack to think of my dog being on the road. UGH!

Poor dog having to bark at you after you returning him. If you looked in his eyes, I'm sure you saw the apology. LOL.

Thank you for helping him.

Your picture made me laugh. Yes, I think that is exactly what's going on with Dudely. He looked real proud showing his lady how to release the catch on the deck box where cat food is stored.

He was probably teaching her so she could go get it and bring it back while his fat behind kept their residence all toasty and he ate the treats from his purse.

When I went to refill his purse, I found the other toys but the purse was far away, tucked between a couple hay bales, with no treats in it. He ate them and hid the evidence.

8) Thank you for the adorable picture. Here's one for the footprints that dog must have left in your heart:

Hi All! Been missing you guys over the last week. I picked up a virus from hell last week and have been super sick ever since. Started out with a high fever (102.9), soar throat, and this funky hive rash that just swelled up all over my body. Went to the urgent care and they said strep and gave me a script for penicilin and sent me home. Needless to say, it was not strep. The rash went away after 3 days but then my eardrum ruptured and it moved into my chest. So back to the doctor again and this time 3 more prescriptions. It's been a week and a half now and it's still in my chest and my balance is all off and my ear rings like crazy. So I've now paid for 3 doctor visits, 5 prescriptions, and I've missed 5 days of work in 2 weeks. Pretty spendy little bug I picked up.

Finally felt well enough today to sit at the computer for a bit and see what's been going on. The main page scares the hell out of me. Seems like the world went plum crazy while I've been battling the bug!

What a sweet post, TG. I don't think any of us will forget each other. We've offered companionship, kindness, love, advice, sympathy, and encouragement to each other. It's not something easily forgotten.

How sweet of you to rescue that tiny little kitty. It's so exhausting caring for something that needs something so often. It IS like having a baby, and it's easy to see why, at a certain age, women can no longer have babies. The stamina just isn't there. It's really hard and the frustrations are many. But, when there's success, it's all worth it.....if we live through it.

I'm sure you know, but if you don't, each time the kitty eats, he/she needs the belly rubbed to simulate mama's tongue and stimulate them to pee and poop.

So glad to hear you have a building for the kitties, and hope it makes your work easier this winter. Hard enough to do things in winter, without having to be constantly in the wind and cold. Once it gets nastier out, the kitties might go in there.

If you really want them there, you could try feeding them there in the daytime, but take the food away at might so it doesn't draw possums who will run them out.

I can't imagine cleaning the blood from the driveway from a relatives hunt. He/she should have done it. That's not right. They better share some of that meat with you.

I bet your application will go through just fine, and hope you are able to get that job. It your app. doesn't go through, or you're in need before it does go through, let me know. I have food to share. We can meet halfway.

Try to not worry about things out of your control, TG. It's something we all do, but it's not productive, it causes stress, poor health, and uses energy better applied to something useful. You've got too much depending on you to be sick. Alllllllllways something depending on us. Always. LOL.

But, spring will come, and summer will follow. sunnywthr

thank you for being so very kind. kindness is seriously underrated. don't you think?

my gawd, the value of the tip about the belly. i'm gonna do that when she wakes back up. well, she'll stuff herself and then i'll do that. i can almost think she is going into the bathroom after she eats....yeah, and she is going by herself!! i had to put her butt in the sink and cleaned her with some baby soap mom had. she smells a hell of alot better, but, she almost lost her mind when i tried to dry her. so, i buffed her and wrapped her in a clean blanket. it's mostly her butt and hind legs. she was trying to lay next to sam man...

TG, if that adorable little kitty on your post is the one you're talking about, it looks old enough that he/she wouldn't need his/her belly rubbed. But, if you didn't get your hand ripped off, and it worked, I'm happy! Lucky kitty to have such an attentive mommy.

Tauranga, you have sweet thoughts. Thank you for thinking them, and stay safe.

Don't forget to buy your plastic and duct tape if you haven't already. If one of those volcanoes go, it might keep the ash from sifting in.

SO, sorry you were feeling bad. It sounds totally miserable.
Hope you're much better by now!

Awww, I always seem to miss you all lately!

I have never known such a wonderful bunch of ladies like y'all! I'm SO honored to "know" you. I just know someday we'll all meet up somehow. OG, we sure have missed you, but I truly understand the lurking part. Some days the news is just too much to respond to anything. I love the porchlight idea! Kind of like the candle in the window.

I'll save the rest of the conversation for later, when everyone is back on. Love you all!

Geez I feel like I havent been on in forever. I have been having internet problems for the past week and its driving me nuts.

I am glad everyone is being so kind to all the animals and also sprouting up on the board again! Sorry to hear you have felt so crappy SO.

We are trying to find a lady friend for pinky the pig just havent had a free weekend to do it yet and this weekend isnt lookin good either.

All my neighbors love him and they have nicknamed him Arnold. He walks along the fence when they walk by or ride the horses and all the horses like pinky too.

He is craving attention now, so he really needs a companion. Ever since we let him roam free in the pasture there is no smell, he doesnt crap in the pen anymore, so it stays clean. He still thinks toes are a snack and wearing closed toe shoes is an absolute must. I swear the damn pig smiles and its the funniest thing.

Its flava by the way, I am going to get off again and try to have my dad walk me thru this damn internet thing.

Anyone have any good ideas for treating vertigo? I have been taking dramamine but it makes me sleepy. The doc said it should get better over the next few weeks but I really need to get back to work full time.

Good Morning everyone. I finally got my internet explorer working right again. It was sure frustrating to be going helter skelter instead of where you were trying to go.

My dad told me how to fix it and it worked so no more clicking on one thing and being redirected to some random sites!!

I just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone since I know how busy we all get between cooking and family and friends. I will be doing all my pies and cranberry sauce today to get those out of the way.

I hope you all have a great time whatever it is you are doing and TB, I hope you are not cooking for an army again this year like you did last year.

Nines, next post is for you.

I have questions and I cant think of a better person to ask since you are my Dr. Doolittle!

So... Jake the dog, with diabetes, was doing ok but still peeing all over, so when we took him back for the blood curve at the vet they wanted to up the insulin again. We did from 1 to 1.5. After the injection he got super lethargic for about 2 hours and than vomited all the dinner he had eaten and was lethargic again.

The next morning he wouldnt eat his food, called the vet and they said he did need the extra .5 to do it again.

Well... I didnt do it this morning. In addition, he is on hills Rx diet W/D.

So.... me knowing just enough to be dangerous, says to the vet that stuff is loaded with carbs and carbs are the big no-no, so why not add some boiled chicken to it so that he is getting less carbs and more protein??? So I had made that up and added green beans. Cooked it all and threw it thru the food processor, so I now have home made canned style dog food, which he ate and loved this morning instead of sniffing and not eating.

Anyway... this is the specialty vet that my vet sent me to and she said that hi carb is what they want for diabetic dogs??? Doesnt make sense to me and I am not changing it the day before a holiday weekend!

So... this morning instead of his pee being really yellow and smelly, it was almost clear and no smell, and I personally feel like we are on the right path. I feel like I should go with my gut on this one.

The question is, with your animal and holistic background, what is your opinion? If anyone else has experience with this, feel free to chime in.

Flav, I have to agree with Mama. I'm a type 2, just not a 4 legged variety!LOL I'll just throw out my 2 cents worth. High carbs makes NO sense. I have to watch mine really carefully. I can't see why it would be the opposite for animals. What you are feeding Jake (the homemade stuff) isn't going to hurt him and it sounds like he's responding well to it. Watch the fat content in the meat you give him and some carbs are important, too. They just need to be slow metabolizing like brown rice, oatmeal, maybe a little baked/boiled potato mixed with the rest. Don't give him corn, peas, and watch out for too many carrots. They are all high carb veggies.

It gets boring eating the same veg all the time, it'll be worse for the dog. He can't eat brocolli or stuff like that. Pretty much green or wax beans, I would think. Save him some turkey, too.

Speaking of turkey, NO I am NOT cooking this year. We're going to Cracker Barrel this year. Small group this year and no one to eat the left overs. Plus, I think Hubs and I are catching the crud that's going around. Yick!

Everyone, I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow!

 Quoting: flavapor

Oh wow, Flav. I'm honored you asked me but am not qualified. I'll give a personal opinion, but not medical advice.

I'd want to first understand the vet's reasoning on feeding high carbohydrate meals. Am guessing it is to keep the blood sugar more stable through the day and avoid spikes.

Simple carbs (corn syrup, propylene glycol)cause rapid glucose spikes, but complex carbs (starches) are digested more slowly so there aren't the quick spikes.

Carbs are digested faster than protein and have the most effect of the insulin needs.

That said, the vet might feel it's important to have a certain amount of carbs to coincide with the injected insulin, depending on when the insulin peaks.

The studies (which have been few) on diet and treatment of diabetes in dogs has been controversial at best. What works for one often won't work for another.

It would be my opinion that if he's not having wide glucose swings, what you're doing would be better. It would seem that it would be more important to make sure the food is given at the same time in the same amounts and keeping him stable through the day.

If he drops, adding a mid day treat might stabilize him. Dehydrated chicken, jerky, etc. might encourage him to eat when moist food won't.

I'd want to keep a log of exactly what time he eats, what food he eats, how much he eats, and how his levels react to it. That gives you a lot of variables to work with and by adding something, or taking away something, you might just hit on the right combination.

Like I said, I can't give medical advice, and you know that, but what you're doing sounds like it's working. A lot of it is just trial and error and you're with him all the time and can see how he's acting, reacting.

It's really hard to comment without knowing the Vet's logic, but without knowing, your method sounds a whole lot better and it sounds like you're getting the best results. I think your intuition at this point would be the most valuable to Jake.

I sure do wish you luck. The frustration, time, and pain of seeing him when he's not feeling well has to be overwhelming.

Flava,
I do not have experience with this and Nines is your girl, but I wanted to chime in. Go with your gut! Clear, odorless urine would be what I would want too! That makes so much more sense!
Sounds like Jake was in heaven with his gourmet food! LOL

Good for you TB. So glad to hear you'll have a relaxing day. Hope you don't get the crud going around. If you are, when you're at CB, order some soup to take home with you. You don't want to escape the turkey day mess and have to drag yourself to the kitchen starving, but not feeling like cooking, to make something. rockon

Hey, Nine's! I didn't tell the whole truth about cooking!LOL I bought a turkey last night, thinking I would put it in the chest freezer. Well, I haven't been in there for about 5 months and forgot I filled it this summer! SOOO, no room for the turkey, at least not whole. I'm thawing him and I'll cook it up, with a little dressing. We'll have a little bit of "left-overs" and I'll put the sliced turkey in the freezer. It'll fit that way. Since youngest moved out, we haven't cooked much. It was hard not to pick one up at $.57 a lb.

What are you doing this year?

That sounds great, TB, as long as you feel up to cooking it. Hope you get it done before you start feeling real bad. It will make some great soup and probably better than what you can get at a restaurant.

Sure do hear that on the turkey price. I got a lot this year. Some were dropped off to other people, and 3 are in the freezer for dog food. Mine came from an Amish/Mennonite family that free ranges them. But, if things get bad, Pupster and Little Dog will have to share their canned grocery store turkey with me. 8)

Hmmm. What I'm doing this year. Does feeling selfish and needing to be alone count? HAHA.

Long story short, my son will be home with some friends.

One very nice person has kind of thrown a glitch into things. He kind of invited himself, and for many reasons, not to be listed, I don't want him to come, but don't want him to know others came when I told him I won't be having people here, but will deliver something.

Sooo, since my son and his friends are good sports, they'll be my delivery people. HAHA. They'll also amuse themselves and I won't have to stay up til 2 in the morning wishing everyone would go home.

Have most of the goodies done. Sugar cookies, p. butter, choc. chip, raisin oatmeal, buckeyes, pumpkin bars, etc. 8)

Today I'll do fruit salad, cheesecake, bread pudding, dinner rolls, and all the things that need to be made ahead.

So, for now, that's the plan.....but we all know how plans go, don't we? LOL.

We sure do!LOL I just haven't gotten back up to par after taking care of the folks. Everything has been super stressful since I got back home, everything seems to be a crisis. (I give up on spelling today. Sorry everyone!)

I'm just going to throw Tom in the oven and roast him. No big deal. I make my gram's bread dressing and that's easy. I still don't like cornbread stuffing very much. I'm super cleaning the house, finally, but the kids left SO much crap when they moved out! I can only do a little at a time, too. Add to that, all the times hubs works overnights and sleeps during the day...well, it's slow going anyway. I was trying to get a couple of my friends kids to come and help (with pay), but they weren't interested. My latest cheat is to put the cart on the garden tractor and load the stuff for the dumpster in the cart. The cotton dust in the air makes it too hard to be outside for very long, so I can't make a lot of trips to the dumpster.

I'm at the stage of cleaning where it looks worse than when I started!LOL You know when you start sorting things out and making NEW piles of junk to throw out!?! That's where I'm at right now. I need to buy some more plastic totes for the stuff I'm saving for the kids. They say they don't want it, but I know from experience, they will later!LOL

Re: >>>>Sustainable Living PLUS Canning and Dehydrating Food<<<<
Thank you for the input everyone. We have been feeding him the same time every day twice, and the same thing. Yesterday was the first change so hes just getting more protein now but not just protein.

I dont get the carb thing for dogs either TB. As for your turkey, my favorite way to do turkey, and it turns out the best I have ever had is to put it in the oven covered just before you go to bed on 250 and turn it off in the morning. The house smells great and the turkey is perfect and fall off the bone juicy. You can still carve it too, and the best part is it still makes that delicious skin that I LOVE to eat.

That is the perfect way considering your not feeling well.

Nines, I hope your houseful is fun, its always nice to see the kids and like you said, they can entertain each other. I love watching my kids with their friends, gives insight on what kind of person they are when they arent around you.

So.... what about the girl friend? Is she still in the picture?
