Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :) ... Quoting: Ladye Jayne Smith That. We will be in Galveston this weekend doin post hurricane clean up at the vacay house. Will keep an eye on this. If she blows we will head out immediately. What's the worst that could happen? We drive 2 hours home, nothing happens, and I feel like a dummy. On the other hand .... being oceanfront, on an island, is a very bad idea. I don't think Galveston would be threatened by a tsunami from La Palma... Depends on if, and how much, of the mountain falls into the sea. Yes, it will wrap around Florida and head into the Gulf. Will not be anything like what hits the East Coast, and we are behind a 12 ft seawall, but even a 9 meter tsunami will blow over that. I'd rather default to safety on that one. It's only a 2 hour drive back down, and my kids will be able to laugh at Doomy Mom for years if nothing happens. Absolutely wise. If it happens and it hits at the maximum on some of the models, not only will there be wrap-around wave energy moving into the Gulf, but also significant water and debris from Florida being pushed into it as well. The place is already damaged from the hurricane, may as well toss in tsunami doom as well to make the insurance compay extra happy. Time to say goodbye for volcano-thank you for all support :) There are several detailed links in this thread to studies done for the last 20 years. Bottom line, depending on how much falls off the volcano to start, and what the sea bottom is like approaching the USA East Coast, and then the land elevation, the wave will probably not exceed 75 feet and 12 miles inland. The most doomy scientific ones postulate a worst case 300 foot wave and 20 miles inland. I saw one essay saying 40 miles inland with the most terrible wave. (Florida being so unusually low could be worse penetration inland.) Some folks here are getting needlessly worried. You need to worry about your water source, disease, and electric source, and what will be gone and what won't. If you have a decent set of preps to last 6 months and are at least 40 miles in- probably 20 is fine- you can stay home and guard your place from hordes of refugees and relax for several months before doing anything major. The rebuilding will be an economic boom to people near the coast but not too near. |

The UH-OH area is estimated to be a 500 cubic km., and it's in the half part of where the swarm is located on the map. The UH-OH area was always at the risk of a landslide in the case of a powerful eruption. The more the quakes are moving away from the UH-OH area (which means lava is rising on a path away from UH-OH area but STILL an area connected or in proximity of UH-OH area) to MORE land is at risk at ADDING to the UH-OH land mass. |
