Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.
I come from a medical family as well (I'm the blacksheep banker of the bunch) and they are all extremely upset and worried about this, there are going to be a lot of unintended (at least you hope they're unintended) consequences to this boondoggle...

Community healthcare clinics are already shutting down.

There is already an extreme shortage of doctors taking medicaid and medicare, this is only going to get worse.

People are now finding out that the insurance plans they've had for years aren't going to meet Obamacare requirements, so they are being shuffled to more expensive policy's...

It's a nightmare...
 Quoting: Saddletramp

wonder why they chose that profession in the first place?? Money?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16361770

What's wrong with making money after you do eight years of college, internship, $500,000+ in student loans???

You damn well ought to make some money after all of that...

What are you a fuckin' Marxist Communist?!?!?
 Quoting: Saddletramp

I would really love to start looking at this type of thinking more critically,
I think it is at the root of most of our problems.
America is about "Look at that beautiful home, I am going to work and have one like that also"
but this attitude of "you should not have anything until I do" or
" I should have a nice home and you should be my servant" has been growing like a cancer.
Why are we tolerating this crap?
And why are we not addressing it for what it is.
Anti-American
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26663220

Because we have a new generation, largely new immigrants, who know deep down that they do not have the capability to achieve that beautiful home by hard work.

So they have to scramble the system around if they are to get more for themselves.

You stupid fuck, hospitals treat indigent patients on a daily basis. Ability to pay is irrelevant.

Emergent patients are NOT turned away.
 Quoting: Debauchery

You are the stupid fuck. ER's are NOT a substitute for a real healthcare system. Plus charges are significantly more expensive. Finally, the cost for those that can't pay are passed on to the rest of us.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11998544

He ASKED how it works here, He wanted to know if people are turned away if they are dying. I told him how it worked for poor people that needed emergency medical treatment but couldn't pay for it. Also informed him that you don't have to pay upfront to receive emergency treatment. It's a fact. What's your issue?

I wasn't advocating for people to just stroll into an ER for a cold, jack up a large bill and force taxpayers to handle it.

Calm the fuck down.
 Quoting: Debauchery

Yeah, Romney tried pedaling that shit, too. Those of us who work are paying for the poor...just at a premium. The Right's fight of Socialized medicine is stupid and hurtful.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11998544

Seems that my costs are going up, not down, under the "Affordable Care Act". So that premium isn't as expensive as all the other shit that I have to drag around and pay for thru Obamacare, so that I can get care too.

Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.
I work in a hospital and there have been other changes in getting ready for obamacare. One change that just came down the pipe in the last week is they have changed the staffing grids. Now nurses and pcts can have more patients. This is dangerous on so many levels. The unwork on is nephrology and inpatient dialysis. These patients are extremely ill. We also have pre kidney transplant patients. Changing the staffing grid so nurses have more patients is dangerous. Also, they have it where the patient care techs have 18 patients apiece. Now, bear in mind my hospital has also basically eleminated the phlebotomist position and ekg techsand techs do this. So, they do all blood draws, ekgs, vital signs, change linen, help patients with baths, feeding toileting, plus a myriad of other duties. It may not seem like much, but by increasing the patient load and combining several positions into one it puts the patients at risk. Also, something that really has nothing to do with patient care, but they are doing away with the employee pention plan. I am rambling, but I don't think anyone is going to be prepared for the changes coming down the pipe. I know we keep getting surprises every time a new memo comes out at work.

I keep hearing that doctors do this, but in my lifetime I've had a variety of different sorts of doctors and I cannot remember a single one, ever, not one, who seemed like a drug pusher to me.

Nurses yes. Nurses tell you wrong things. They tell you that vaccinations are required. Some do.

But doctors never talked that way to me.

Do you really have to pay cash to get fixed in the hospital in America.

What if you are severly injured or dying and you dont have enough money to pay them, what happens, or do you have to pay first.

I'm keen to understand how the system works now, and what affect this new system will have, could someone explain for me please.

My sister is a doctor (OB), she called me today and said she had been crying since last night. She is beside herself. Now that the final nail has been driven into the US medical industry it's hit her hard.
Main issue for doctors is that they are being mandated too and regulated like never before. Most of Obamacare focuses on regulations, not the patient. That's what most people don't get. It's all about reporting back to the government. They will be determining your treatments and watching every facet of your "care".
This is scary. Take some time and dissect the bill. It's a whopper, makes our tax code look like 1st grade reading.

Socialized med has been in the works since Vietnam war in the USA. Start bringing in Pakis, Indians, Arab doctors so that when Socialized Med kicks in and thousands of US doctors quit from disgust or cannot afford to practice, the Foreign docs will take their place and work for peanuts since they dont have student loans. This is what was explained to me when discussing this issue with a member of an Asian state department. How come the US residency directors and hospitals are clambering to hire foreign doctors ? In my state ( Shitagan) 9 out of 10 doctors are Indian or Arab.

In the US they're required by law to treat you if you have a life threatening emergency, private or public hospital. They will charge you through the roof however, so unless you're very low income (programs with discount or free treatment), those kinds of trips can be financially crippling if you don't have insurance.

Regardless of what they'd like you to believe, doctors make great money. This is an example pay scale:

[link to www1.salary.com]

With these changes, Doctor pay will most likely take a hit, and their accountability will increase, which is why they're complaining. I'd feel more sympathy for them if they weren't

A) one of the best paying professions in the world
B) employed by for-profit companies that drive premiums up to increase profits

Healthcare has enjoyed a free-for-all on the American public for half a century, it's high time we got control of it.

Re: My sister called me today, she's a doctor.
I have a doctor who is a doctor who isn't my sister. He anticipates no change in the current (albiet shitty) healthcare system. However, I went to the ER with a kidney stone roughly six months ago and in the pre-screening/triage process I was asked if I had ever had any thoughts of harming myself or others. No of course was my answer and the Dr. said they had to ask this all the time now as protocol. 5 minutes later I was administered a monster shot of dilaudid, sat in the ER for about 4 hours not givin a fuck, got another monster D shortly thereafeter and then was admitted. At the tim I thought maybe they were just screening me for mental instability or drug abuse before they gave me the D. But in retrospect I'm not so sure.

So in another somewhat related incident sown the road I was at a rheumatologist because I have been having hip pain that is getting pretty nasty. He asks me the routine blah blah about the nature of the pain etc. Then he asks if I feel depressed. I say hey suffering through pain 24/7 can have a way of sucking the joy out of your life, but I'm dealing OK. So suddendly he's typing his fingers bloody on his laptop and I say what the fuck is that about. Well we have to keep a record of people who suffer from depression he say. Doing my best to keep my composure I say who the fuck ever said anything about any sort of clinical depression? I said being in pain sucks, thats all. Well he said as he closed his laptop we are required to document all patients who suffer from depression. I grabbed my jacket and split and will never go back but I suppose that is now on my 'permanent record' But hell they can go fuck themselves.

For the sake of full disclosure I really do feel that something needs to be done about the current state of healthcare in the US. As it is the people who pay for insurance also pay for all the people who don't have insurance. Obviously that can't go on forever because in the end nobody will be able to afford insurance.

But yea, I feel I have some pretty good first hand knowledge that there is some hocusfuckingpocus going on with the new Gov HC that wasn't going on prior.
