Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Perhaps many will now be considering the future and purchase yaupon trees - we can hope! I don't expect to be around long enough to make the purchase worthwhile.

Pooka, I don't know how long it will take my coffee tree to produce. If I get far enough ahead on chores, I may plant root clippings to make more coffee trees for my greenhouse.

For over 30 years I have ground my own beans daily. Used to buy them from Trader Joes, but now Wally World has coffee beans at a price that blows away Starbucks and the other expensive brands. It is no more expensive than ground coffee and way better. What is your preferred brand and flavor from walmart?

Fearing a grid down situation, I bought a small MANUAL coffee grinder as a back up. Good planning. Wouldn't it be just the worst to be stuck with no coffee to drink and no way to grind the beans? Actually I have no question I would be resourceful, and you as well. If nothing else, I'd put the beans in a nut chopper, or in a bag of some sort to hit with a hammer. There WOULD be a way to get those beans into drinking shape! LOL

BTW, speaking of addictions, I read that almost 10% of Americans are on Prozac and related meds. YIKES. If SHTF, the various types of addicts will be very dangerous. Would they be dangerous, or just severely depressed or even suicidal?

In an emergency, I think it wise to plant herbs such as poppies and MJ to provide local docs with emergency meds to treat all the nuts. Great idea!

A little over 100 years ago, docs treated many mental illnesses and depression with Laudanum (morphine in alcohol). It worked, but it left millions addicted.
 Quoting: darth
Turned them yellow, as well, I recall reading, though perhaps not as badly as did opium.

Medications are going to be a large concern for many, including myself. I am stocking up what I can, and have plans to titer myself off those I will not be able to stock or later acquire. I'll be very ill and in even more pain, in fact near immobilized, even though I have enough pain meds to last a considerable period. Some of the other things I take deal with nerve pain, and being without will be harsher than I can imagine.

I can't feature what many will do without medications to which they are accustomed. Many will not be aware that they must take themselves off slowly with the last month or so of their stock on hand. There will be medical emergencies, cardiac arrest, strokes, so many things, with no 911 response. Families will have to care for their own members.

So many things need people to be aware of today, in order to prepare, yet we can only carry the message, not the people.

Did you all notice the link I posted, wherein Sweden is having their citizens prepare? Very wise of the country - wish ours would do so more vigorously, and even admit the government will not be there to rescue in those times.

If wishes were fishes, we'd all have a fry, right?
 Quoting: Pooka

Preferred coffee beans = Sams Costa Rica. If that is not in stock, Columbian.

Ref the mentally ill coming off meds, I have observed rage as well as suicidal behavior. Bad combo.

Ref the question of replacing modern psych drugs with plant products, I really don't have a good solution.

We elderly and chronically ill had better have alternatives. I stock extra meds in an old refrigerator to delay the deterioration.

Preferred coffee = anything with caffeine.

It's been a concern in the prepper community about medications, especially psychological meds. I live in a state that allows recreational use of marijuana, that's an avenue that might be useful. The only prescription in my family is losartan for my wife's high blood pressure. I think that a grid down situation would help her manage that through more physical activity but I would depend on a plentiful supply to wean her off. So many more conditions require an uninterrupted supply of meds, I shudder at the number of people with transplants, those with insulin dependent diabetes, even the number of people that need thyroid supplements. Compound that with the addicts to drugs and alcohol and there is a massive health problem when modern 'medicine' goes away.

Hey Pooka! Free pigs:

[link to houston.craigslist.org (secure)]

I gotta get a stock trailer to haul the free goats.

I have a large dog cage made of wire that I could use for the pigs, but they are the only species of livestock prohibited in my town.

Besides, I have wild hogs I need to trap first.

People need to learn to slaughter and process animals for SHTF. It's a necessary skill.

On the same note, my chickens are getting old and I get fewer eggs each week. I plan to slaughter the old ones and buy new, young stock for my new chicken yard.

You sure find the greatest things, Darth! Those old chickens are going to make some fine chicken and dumplings and chicken stew!

Not sure a wire dog cage would contain the pigs - I think they can bite through wire. Wouldn't make much of a life for them, with no mud to root in and all that.

I'd love to have chickens but haven't thought of a way to do it in this small area, and neighbors would complain about the flies.

Good going, Darth - you could have a huge barn filled with animals at this rate!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
People, thanks to Bear Independent, tonight I learned of another youtube channel which is exactly what this thread and we, the group, need! It's "Ice Age Farmer" telling the truth about the Saunder minimum, the current true climate change, and what's going on with our food supply, as well as what we individually need to do about it.

I was very taken, with a chill, by the statements regarding controlling people via food, as well as just how many crops around the world have been affected this year by the cold and wet.

Time to become very serious about growing as much of our own as we can - and remember to find calorie-dense foods which our bodies will certainly need, such as potatoes. The colder temps will take up more of our calories, as will harder work. Plant potatoes in your grass clippings, in buckets, any way you can. Plant winter squash because it requires no preserving- just a cool dry spot and it will keep for months.

At the end of the growing season, pick all green tomatoes and lay them on something flat, not touching each other, blossom side down. I've done this before, so I know it works. We had fresh home-grown tomatoes til Christmas that way.

Plant, people, plant, lest we be controlled by food.

GLP would not allow me to paste the yt channel URL so here is one post on it - search yourselves for the channel Ice Age Farmer

I am not communicating clearly. The wire cage is just for transporting the piggies to my farm; I have some fenced yards they could live in on a more permanent basis....at least until it is time for a BBQ.

Ref keeping chickens in the city, if you only have hens, they are quieter. Ducks make even less noise and mine seem to eat primarily mud.

I don't have many problems with flies because I put out fly traps.

I share eggs with all my neighbors and that helps them accept my large flock of birds. Biggest issue is that when it rains, the chicken yard has quite an odor.

Of course you will be inviting all of us friends from this thread to the barbecue, right? Looking forward to it!

Really happy for you, Darth. You are preparing in a wonderful manner!

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
This is a post I had placed in a thread about FDA wanting us not to eat chicken, or some such - there does seem to be indication that TPTB are trying to move us away from meat eating and toward vegeterianism. That will not be difficult by fall when the effects of all the flooding reach the store.

In terms of preparing for whatever the future may bring that might cause disruptions in normal life and commerce, when we tell people about stocking foods, we make a point of stressing to include fats - preferably good things like olive oil, but even vegetable oil and shortening if necessary, because we will require those fats to go with all the storage foods, such as beans and rice. We often recommended storing nuts, as well, because they are both high protein and high fat. Peanut butter has a similar content and purpose.

Our bodies really do require these substances. Where do people who do not eat meat acquire necessary fats? They are not in legumes or vegetables, but are in nuts. Is it necessary for vegetarians to eat a quantity of nuts for the purpose? Peanut butter frequently? I like nuts, and enjoy them every now and again. However, it is more normal to us to eat meat of varying types - it's our natural diet, along with all the vegetables and fruits.

Definitely! You are terrific! And will be eating well - better than a lot of us by far, when the time comes!

Edit: Feel like I need to remind you about the odor of cooking food, especially meat.

Starving people will have noses acutely attuned to food odors, and roasting meat will have a scent traveling far and wide to titillate the nostrils of many. Do be careful and thoughtful. Best you have a lot of armed neighbors invited to the barbecue, and I do mean a lot! Please be thoughtful and careful.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Made it to the store today, but instead of items for the month, I mostly purchased for "eventuality". Found good things - even went for one can of sardines in mustard. Good protein and a huge change in diet. But only one. LOL Found other things that will be useful to vary diet and add protein and other nutrients, as well as another quality bottle of 200 vitamin tablets. I take a lot of separate nutrients as well, and will hope to stock them up, too, but needed the general vitamins just to be sure I had them. Hope everyone is storing vitamins as we will need them, eating a diet less varied than usual and perhaps less nutritional. Need to fill in the holes.

Found hot chocolate mix in envelopes in a good deal because it is off-season. That will be a pleasant taste treat along the line. Four boxes to enjoy down the road.

Many are now saying to have a minimum of two years' supply of food. That's probably a very good idea. However, I will be doing well to have six months'. Hope everyone here is well ahead of me, and close to the two years available for you and your family. We each do as we can. Given enough time I might get there, but truthfully, I don't feel led to have that much. I think I need a few months' worth and that is enough, though I don't know why. Thing of it is - God knows the future, so if He says a few months' food, I'm good.

Next thing I need to know is how much water I can collect in a garbage can on the deck. However, I cannot learn that until fall, since we won't have those kinds of rains again until then. Don't recall how many gallons I put away recently, but it is a good start. Don't know if I can find or make room for more. I'm trying to purchase foods now that don't require a lot of water to prepare. Have the beans and rice that will require quite enough.

Lots of very interesting threads today. Please know that it looks like the illnesses in the luxury warm water vacation spots will be blamed on insecticides but will actually be from ebola, at least the married couple most recently dead. Lots of information available to see that.

Even though nearly all of you are focused on summer activities and gardening and whatever else you do in summer, I am going to keep this thread going, and plan on it building up again either this fall, or sooner if the handwriting on the wall becomes brighter.

My local Super1 bakery sells me 2.5 gallon buckets with lids for a dollar. They get frosting in them. I like the smaller size at my age - the five and six gallon buckets are HEAVY when filled with grain.

Saw a scary graphic last night about this year's harvest predictions. All that midwest rain and flooding delayed planting past the optimal date, so even if they plant now, it's too late for the year. Huge percentage (see link below) weren't able to plant. Many farmers aren't insured and will have to declare bankruptcy. Prices will go through the roof.

This is going to have an apocalyptic impact at a very foundational level not only for our food supply, but also for the economy. The drug lamivudine and the doctor who "discovered" it are from the 2014 epidemic. His findings were tentative and at that time could not be replicated by anyone else.

Do we know if the drug has been proven effective widely? I do not believe it is currently being used in the epidemic there, which would indicate it is not considered effective. We need to know more about this, particularly whether it is currently being used to treat ebola patients and if not, specifically why not, before investing in an expensive drug that may or may not be successful in the treatment of ebola, and certainly will have side effects with which we may have difficulty contending without excellent medical care, which would not be available or we would not be treating ourselves.

Thank you, Windsage, for the coffee link! We do have our priorities, especially first thing in the morning!

So perhaps the beans would be happy in a two or two and a half gallon size bucket rather than a five gallon? That would be helpful indeed. I'm anxious to get them into soil and watch the progress.

I had called my smaller buckets from the bakery two gallon size but I believe they are two and a half gallon. They too are a dollar each. I don't store grains so that weight isn't an issue. I could not possibly lift the five gallon size filled with water. I was able to bring the house inside, clear into the garage, in a way that nobody saw, and fill the buckets with water in place, half-hidden by the freezer in the corner. They will stay there even during use. I have dippers to use for filling smaller, more manageable containers to bring the lovely clean water into the kitchen.

This year's crop harvest will indeed be awful. Did any of you put that together with the news about selling produce to Mexico? Turns out we sell them a great deal of wheat, corn, etc. Anything sold to them or another country this year will be to the detriment of our own citizens, including us. We need to be stockpiling today, even as prices are going up, because we know what to expect in fall and winter.

Our economy is not the booming concern we read about, in my opinion. I have concerns about that for this fall. Hope to be wrong.

Glad you found the graphics on farms, Windsage. I've been trying to tell people about this for some time - hope many are taking it seriously. What I actually believe is that this thread will become important to many this fall and early winter, when it is just over the line from being very helpful and into the zone of unaffordability and unavailability. However, we have tried - I keep putting the warnings in here. Some get it, some don't, and we are not responsible to spoonfeed people any more than we have.

I have been storing gallon sized zip locks with rice, oatmeal, instant mashed potatoes and dried beans in these containers.

Do you see any reason these wouldn't hold up over time?

Pic is at link.

Reason I have so many of these containers (a lot of them still empty) is cause hubby quit smoking and goes to these as a substitute.

So I have a stack of these with the items listed. with many more to fill.
Lighter weight than a full 5 gallon bucket. Can easily be transported and placed elsewhere as needed.

My favorite instant coffee is Mount Hagen organic. It's about $0.16 a serving and I always buy organic when possible.

Found this link describing "best" instant coffees - it has some good options:

Just saw your question from last week about growing Provider green beans in containers. I do believe it would work really well, as their size and shape is similar to a house plant. They need no support and won't trail or vine. Must have enough sun, though!

I would think so, as long as the soil is good. And don't over-water as there is no drainage in a bucket.

African doctor found cure for Ebola by using HIV drug Lamivudine, trade name Epivir:

For you small time investors, here is a potential opportunity.

If we have a world wide pandemic, it will be important to have a personal supply sufficient for yourself and family.

However, imagine what the price would be for a life saving drug that is in short supply?

I keep extra meds in a refrigerator so that they will last far beyond the expiration date....just in case.
 Quoting: Windsage

Drat. I had saved that link since 2014 and never thought to check again.

On the other hand, the field of research is not necessarily populated with saints; many times false results are reported depending on who is sponsoring the research. I don't have full trust in the pharma types, nor the globalists who might enjoy having an Ebola pandemic to cull the herd. I guess I will stick with the old stand by, Sovereign Silver ionic silver.

These work better:

I think that last one is the supplier I have used the most.

Small Biz Idea: How about packaging wheat, powdered milk, pasta, etc. in these bags using a Food Saver or other vacuum sealer machine? Then, sell locally at swap meet or via Craigs L. with small markup. The only competitors are Sams Club selling buckets of freeze dries.

I put my mylar bags full of grain, etc. with oxygen absorbers inside food grade plastic pails. My grandkids will be able to pass that food down to their kids...unless SHTF sooner.

Just have to store most products in climate controlled area, i.e., your closet or under your bed.

BTW, the shorter buckets (2.5 gal) can fit under the bed. Just arrange enough buckets to eliminate the bed frame or elevate it on bricks if necessary. You could have a years supply of food under a bed and no one knows as long as you cover it.

Can you tell I have been doing this prepper stuff for over 40 years?

I like those cans and would be using them myself if I had them! Someone else may see a problem with them - I do not. I also appreciate the light weight they would be, even stuffed full.

Seems to me you have a great system! Let's see what others think.

All containers, including these buckets, have to have holes drilled in them, of course! I wouldn't plant without drilling drainage holes. Crucial.

Re: Practical Prepping Protocol even if Poor
Turns out my assumption that buckets sizes were similar between deli and bakery was wrong indeed! And in a very good way! I thought in addition to the larger buckets, I had filled several two-gallon buckets with water. Nopers - they are three and one half gallon buckets - which does wonders for my water count!

By all means, if you are getting food-quality buckets for some purpose, check them out - read on the bottom in the white print the exact size. You might get a great surprise! I'm happy!
