Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I've programmed for 20 years and it has taken it's toll on me.
Almost every day I go home without the sense of accomplishment...that is what bugs me the most.
Yes it is very repetative ...almost deja vu like.
The talent pool is flooded.
But it pays the bills and keeps my brain working.

Some days I wonder if I should have started my own business and build decks or fences.
That way I could look back after a hard days work and touch something and feel good about myself.

Programming can be boring and the industry will chew you up and spit you out.

I wouldnt mind the job if I was paid double and that aint gonna happen.
I feel stuck.

its only a matter of time til society has enough of this.
"Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance; they are the peoples' liberty's teeth."

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."

"Religion and morality are the essential pillars of civil society."

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I have been working as a Programmer-Analyst (although an electronics engineer) in the past and it really sucked. I totally understand what you are saying because many of my tasks was to rewrite existing code/applications to a newer framework with an improvement in speed, appearance, more bug free but with no actual innovation or any actually new functionality. Unfortunately, this "strategy" is creating job positions as customers they often buy the same software even with few actual improvements and in the case of semi-custom software (meaning some extra additions or plug-ins per customer need) as in the case that I was working, we are talking about thousand dollars per license! Me as a programmer I was not happy since it had become a routine, but I am sure the bosses were OK with the money that the company was earning. I've spend the best years not practicing my engineering knowledge because electronics engineering jobs in my country are rarities and the only thing that I was "rewarded" is that I've lost my shitty underpaid Programmer-Analyst job! Well, they can shove a 40GB MS SQL database up their asses (that means the RAID HDD that the SQL database files are located on), I am not going to do the same mistake! I want to do my own simpler job (maybe farming, away from the city) and spend my free time with hobbies and no more routine!

Re: Fuck computer programming as a career
I started in a programming job in 99 and by 2001 I was contracting in london. After 911 job market went a bit shit so I built my own ecommerce website, found a few supliers and havent looked back since. Any time I need to add functionality to the site I can code it myself. But setting for myself has certainly meant that I have a brkader skill set and I am not tied to a desk 24/7.

I can remember actually on my first day in the job, I was sitting at my desk thinking 'will I really be sitting at a desk like this for the rest of my working life'

I knew before I got my degree that programming is repetitive.

I'm glad to have this knowledge, but as you say, it's like recreating the wheel over and over again, adding slight modifications that are hardly noticeable.

It's a hard-knock life, for us.

I'm sick and tired of it. I've been programming now for well over a decade and I simply can not write another god damned line of code. It's the same shit over and over again. Make it faster, make it cheaper, make it faster, make it cheaper is all you fucking hear at work and all you see in job postings.

Why in the fuck does any of it matter? Let's run on a treadmill our entire lives so people can have a fucking faster smartphone. Fuck them.

Let's spend hundreds of billions of dollars so algorithms can trade a few microseconds faster. Fuck it.

Let's waste countless man years so the corners of windows are curved and semi-transparent because that shit really matters. Fuck it all.

Let's rewrite the same website infrastrucure in a the latest fad language every couple of years so we all can pretend to be busy bees. Fuck that.

Is there any way out of this treadmill of a life? I highly doubt it. Mankind won't stop in this path to exponential insanity until we are left with nothing but a smouldering pile of ruins we once called civilization.

People can barely keep up with their workload at the office and all the chores at home yet every day you get to work and it's MOAR MOAR MOAR.

And you know what? It's the 0.1% at the top that are *demanding* that every single thing below them cut costs, increase efficiency all so they can see a little MOAR money that they did the month before. Can they even spend the money they make? No, but they still need MOAR and it will come out of your SOUL!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30981074

OP....they will chew you up and use you as much as possible.
During that decade you should have been looking for an OUT...such as starting and running your own company or
writing a piece of software and reselling it.

You have to think about how to put yourself at the TOP of the technology food chain....not be one of the peons working for decades in some cubicle for SOMEONE ELSE.

If you can program you have a good brain....USE IT...for yourself for a change.
LEAD....don't FOLLOW.

Anyway, but on another level it was also an interesting learning experience: Being good at something doesn't mean just because you're good at it that you should do it. You can be good at something, yet find it completely unfulfilling, boring and irrelevant. It's NOT the hand of fate showing you what's best for you.

Truth, openly stated (as above), is sometimes humorous to me.

There is, ofcourse, a sad or outrageous component to this also. And it effects many more than just programmers.

I'm 25 and working in an IT role, I can tell you that I'll be damned if I do this for the rest of my life.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 380553

I don't want to scare you, but I said that at 25. Now I'm in my mid 30's and my resume screams "computer programmer".

Get out while you still can and get some other kind of experience you can use to be marketable. I wish (and still might) try and get on at a local machine shop or some such. Learn a skill like how to actually make things.

Maybe start a 3d printing business.

hahahahaha 25 you're a baby. way too young to be burned out.
i've been doing the same thing for 37 years, now i'm too old (56) to learn anything new.

you better start learning something else before its too late.

Try working for a mid size university. Turn a one 1 month project into 245 meetings and partial completion in 1 year. Great job security, on-site gym, any classes you want to take free, Masters, PhD free if you are interested. Pay will be about 3/4 industry but great benefits.

I say mid size because big you become a number, small you might be expected to actually do something.

Writing programs means thinking like a machine.

Consuming/working with software does pretty much the same to the brain.

Yes, this all is a big part of the story of why we're in the shit we're in. It all numbs us on an emotional level.

Try debugging a program for the whole afternoon and evening and then the phone rings and your gf suddenly expects you to respond to something she tells you on an emotional level. Most probably your brain responds with a: "Can't compute input right now. Object library "EmotionalResponse" not loaded. Change gf if condition CRITICAL.". Just the way it is. This stuff really messes with our brains.

Please, don't compare or confuse the "0.01% at the top" with "Mankind". Trust me, they're not fully Human and can't be rightly categorized as such; they're genetically bestial (not celestial, as they'd have us believe falsely), subhuman (not superhuman) Hybrids. If more real Humans would wrap their minds around that simple FACT, we wouldn't allow ourselves to remain enslaved to them for another single moment of our too brief lifetimes.

Welcome to the real world :)

I for one moved career into SEO because it's just way more creative than programming. Still same shiz on similar level in terms of what the end aim and results are, at least way more challenging and free compared to coding.

Still far, far away from real freedom, mainly freedom of the spirit and real designation of human life.

I went to DeVry for programming in the early 90s. Everybody said the computer industry is going to be the best. After four semesters, I dropped out. The stuff was so damn boring and pitiful, I just couldn't get excited about at all. I'm glad it didn't work out... I can actually enjoy life more, and people more! Unfortunately, people are becoming less interesting and exciting, and so is life, but at least I can pay attention to it.

It's really very simple. You have a skill. You have no money. Employers have money. You want their money? Then, you do what they want and stop your bitching and whining like a fucking pussy or get another job. This isn't rocket science. Your post is pathetic. Who cares if somebody else wastes their money? It's not your money. Who cares how many hours are, in your opinion, being wasted? You're being paid, aren't you? Who cares what the guys at the top want? Want to change what they want? Become one of the top and make the decisions yourself. Wanna be a winner? Stop blaming other people and outside circumstances for your own miserable life and do something about it. It's called being an adult. Try it.

I've been a developer for right at 20 years (this May), and I agree totally.

The pace of change, the deadlines, dysfunctional corporations, and for the past few years daily stand up meetings - what did you do yeasterday, what are you going to do today, do you have any impediments? Ad nauseum.

Fuck it. I'm DONE with it.

At 43 I'm changing careers to nursing. I've heard there's a lot of burn-out there too, but I've always wanted to be a nurse. I almost went into nursing when I (mistakenly) chose CS as a major.
