Asteroid 2012 DA14 is getting bigger and bigger. WTF? | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33417634 United States 02/12/2013 04:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Okay, FWIW, I have a problem with the so called experts here. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34238343 I have a close family member who is a retired engineer (Redstone). He would never be so bold as to make 100% predictions or say things like "math never lies". Anytime we have talked about events over the years he would always put his .02 in but throw out a caveat about unexpected variables. Anytime you make a prediction based on a mathematical model, you cannot completely predict the variable that nature plays. If you could, then we would have 100% forecasts every time. So, I'm a little leery when someone says something will "never" happen as opposed to saying something is "unlikely" to happen. Sorry to say but dr astro is right, the numbers never lie 100% chance it doesn't hit Ty dr astro for all the hard work you have put into disproving alll the doomsayers |

Even with something simplistic as household cleaners, they can't label it 100% effective, because nothing is ever a 100% certainty. But hey, take the word of an invisible man behind the nickname of Dr. Astro straight to the bank, because we all know he is the supreme ruler of knowledge, he knows all. There is no 100% certainty with any asteroid, the same applies to 2012 DA14. Although I'm quite sure will be alright, it's quite ignorant to claim we are 100% safe, and so are you if you take his word for it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33891652 You don't need "they" to tell you, you can do the calculations for yourself and confirm it. |
LEKKER User ID: 34261749 South Africa 02/12/2013 04:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So then if the size is bigger and the original size they said would effect a 750 mile area imagine what a bigger size would effect?? Of course though astromut says it wont hit so I guess we believe him, however if they were wrong at NASA on size then how do we know they were not wrong on where its going?? Of course if they were wrong they wouldn't tell us would they?? Quoting: pmb1 No they won't... They don't know anything more than you and me and the astroDR. They just hope that it won't hit. Yes, actually people like me and those at NASA do know more than you. Oh My Bite Me! Who are you really...Me And Those @ NASA. 33 I LOVE CATS AND SOME PEOPLE. |

Even with something simplistic as household cleaners, they can't label it 100% effective, because nothing is ever a 100% certainty. Quoting: S0L4RN1GHTM4R3 You have assumed that a priori. You're wrong though, it is possible to know the orbit well enough to exclude the possibility. Even with all the variables. At this point, even if something were to hit the asteroid with enough force to give it the delta-V needed to direct it to an earth impact the force required to give it that delta-V would pulverize it anyway. But hey, take the word of an invisible man behind the nickname of Dr. Astro straight to the bank, because we all know he is the supreme ruler of knowledge, he knows all. Quoting: s0larI never asked anyone to take my word for it, I even went out of my way to show everyone how to figure it out for themselves. |

I'm quite sure it does, it's simple physics. Quoting: S0L4RN1GHTM4R3 LOL, simple physics indeed; mass A in this case is many, many, many, many times greater than mass B. Mass B is utterly inconsequential. Double it, it's still inconsequential. Triple it, it's still inconsequential. Etc. It's orders of magnitude too small to matter. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33508203 on that thread saying it'll hit, the OP said our govs would warn us tomorrow they BETTER HAD, if it is going to hit. if they know a small one will hit they may or may not tell the public if a big ELE rock will hit then the .govs will never tell you you will know when you see the 3000 foot tsunami If they tell you that a mile wide or bigger rock is coming then all money would loose its value and people would walk off their jobs society would fall apart. And then the damn thing misses. No they will never saya word and for many good reasons. Thousands of amateurs are watching it and nobody could stop them reporting a potential strike. You bet $100. If it hits earth you win $10000 You can ask Trinity to hold the funds in escrow if you are worried about getting paid. Or figure out another way. I will happily put up to $100,000 dollars against. It would make me an easy $1000 No one will take up the offer though. They will not put their money where their mouth is.
