Dr. Astro Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 33360181 United States 02/12/2013 10:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So then if the size is bigger and the original size they said would effect a 750 mile area imagine what a bigger size would effect?? Of course though astromut says it wont hit so I guess we believe him, however if they were wrong at NASA on size then how do we know they were not wrong on where its going?? Of course if they were wrong they wouldn't tell us would they?? Quoting: pmb1 No they won't... They don't know anything more than you and me and the astroDR. They just hope that it won't hit. Yes, actually people like me and those at NASA do know more than you. Even if people like you an NASA know more, how can we expect to believe that you guys would tell the public EVERYTHING that you guys know, for example, that the size and mass of that object is far greater than what you have been publicly stating? Excuse me? I'm an amateur astronomer, I have no reason NOT tot tell the public everything I know. It's right there in the video dude, H = 24.4 according to my calculations. In other words, if the asteroid's albedo were an average .15 or so, the size would be about 45 meters. That's even smaller than NASA's estimate. If it's a dark rock with an albedo of about 0.05 then the size is about 78 meters according to my calculation of its absolute magnitude. By NASA's it would be about 89 meters with an albedo of 0.05. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7707807 I would have to assume when they said it would not hit, they were using the 45m number. True that they should be updating that with the new size, but have they? anyone? if the trend continues...45, 52, 58, 65, etc. with three days to go we could easily find out it's 100m, so they have got to keep re-calcing the gravity effects, but will they tell us the new results? maybe is a a kilometer or a few and they are just trying to confuse the amateurs til the last minute Actually by amateur observations the size seems to be a bit smaller than what NASA is saying, not larger. |

Is there anybody her who actually made it into highschool? If you're outside a space station in orbit around the Earth and let go of an object. What does the object do? I'm pretty sure that nasa will again change the trajectory of the asteroid after new measures. Quoting: French Coward 34240632 What do you mean again? DA14's trajectory is the same as the one published in March 2012. The error bars are smaller now. they cant even properly forecast a hurricane on earth and when it going to hit, they only tell you on news about 24 hours before a big major blizzard hits us and shut downs all businesses there. and we are expected to beleive there their accuracy as to if this asteroid will fly close or not? Quoting: UK Coward 32059868 Since you obviously don't know the difference between weather and falling we expect you to get an education. Celestial motions are simple ballistic trajectories, governed only by gravity. Weather on the other hand is about the most chaotic system imaginable. (Chaos Theory was invented by a meteorologist.) BTW, 80 years ago you would have gotten zero hours warning. I believe it won't hit... Quoting: El Tiburon But I am sorry, if it were made out of marshmallows or lead would affect the mass and therefore effect the trajectory. Mass = gravity... It's 4th grade science. Fuckin' NO! What the fuck is wrong with people? We've know for CENTURIES that objects with different masses wil fall at the same rate. Reaching for the sky makes you taller. Hi!
