Also, debris from any impact in the Martian orbit will have to travel about 54,600,000 km to reach Earths orbit. |

Dr. Astro (OP) Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 4211721 United States 03/04/2013 11:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No, I don't know that. At the very least, a comet is going to pass by Mars at such a close distance that Mars will be within the coma and micrometeoroids from the comet may even damage our probes. A direct impact between mars and the comet is unlikely, but it is possible. No one knows for sure whether it will happen or not. Why is it that so many GLP'ers hate not having an answer? It seems like everything has to have an answer one way or another, even if it's a wacky one. The truth is sometimes we just don't have the answer and this is one of those times. We will have the answer, and probably soon, but we don't just yet. |

my 2 cents User ID: 26646007 Canada 03/05/2013 05:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I realize that as of now it is impossible to accurately predict a hit or miss on Mars. How long before the event can it be said with certainty (99% or greater) that it will or will not hit? Thanks. Hard to say, they just found some pre-discovery images of it from Pan-STARRS that gives us a much longer observation arc, but we still can't rule out the possibility. It may be weeks before we know for sure. |

Dr. Astro (OP) Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 33360181 United States 03/05/2013 06:25 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | a question related to comets... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 788508 Is it normal to have so many visible comets in one year..(4 comets this year) and if not, why is there more traffic now? Sometimes we get no good comets in a year, sometimes we get multiple, it just depends. It's been a few years since we've had a good comet, so we're overdue. In 2002 we had a few awesome comets, including C/2002 T7 LINEAR, C/2002 V1 NEAT (though those two didn't start to put on their best shows until 2003), comet Ikeya-Zhang, and comet Kudo-Fujikawa which was also at around magnitude 6 late that year. This year Pan-STARRS, ISON, and Lemmon will be our best bets for good comets. Last Edited by Astromut on 03/05/2013 06:26 AM |

It's GLP, no-one said it has to make sense! :p It makes sense if you are a Stock Market technical analyst. I have been looking for this event since 2006. At that time I already knew that something was not right. My first confirmation came in 2009 and the next one should be in 2015. If it comes through, all the hell will break loose soon after that... in 2016. But of course, this is GLP and nobody is credible here. However, we are by far more honest than FOX or CNN. Anonymous Coward User ID: 20176000 United States 03/05/2013 07:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am not saying that Dr. Astro is not correct but we must be cautious of anyone or any organization saying that the trajectory of this Comet is known with certainty. Comet C/2013 A1 is a non-periodic Comet. Here is what Wikipedia say about non-periodic comets: "Non-periodic comets (or long-period comets) are comets that do not have confirmed observations at more than one perihelion passage,[1] and thus generally have orbital periods of 200 years or more. They include single-apparition comets that pass through the Inner Solar System only once. They are on unstable near-parabolic orbits that will not return to the vicinity of the Sun for hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years – if ever." So, if NASA knew that a comet was on a collision course with Earth in 2014, would they say anything? No, instead they would say that the Comet would hit Mars in 2014. |
