Very fall-like here too! Loving it!
Quoting: Simple27 Me too! I had my first sweatshirt-wearing of the season this week. Also broke down and turned my heat on, it got chilly enough. Quoting: KickinIt I've come close to putting the heat on but ended up putting the space heater on instead just to take the chill out of the air. The last week or so was actually very warm and humid. I do see the heat coming on in the very near future though lol. Quoting: Simple27 Yeah, it's going up to 80 here Wed. Other than that, mostly 70's. It's only upper 50s here today! Quoting: WhiteAngel Right?! And it was mostly a New England event, although it affected the whole east coast/coastline for at least some time. I think it said the Boston area experienced the 14-16 hours. Scary. And very strange after they ruled out so many things that could have been a possible cause. Here's a few articles about it Remembering New England’s “Dark Day” [ link to www.history.com (secure)] The New England Dark Day, May 19, 1780 [ link to www.newenglandhistoricalsociety.com (secure)] Quoting: KickinIt From one of your links: Save for a few peeks of sunlight in the afternoon, the shade lingered over the Northeast for the rest of the day. The night that followed was remembered as one of the darkest on record. This makes me think that it was smoke and ash. They saw peeks of sunlight in the afternoon. We have had very smoky skies in Colorado and California. I'm thinking even though it may not have been recorded, a possible volcano blew off a huge plume of smoke to the west. Remember not far west of New England at that time, there weren't a lot of people (at least European, that would have made notes of the event) so no one around to record anything. Why volcano? To me, nothing else makes sense. Just a huge smoke plume. They would have mentioned ash. It wasn't from space, because of the color of the clouds and haze. those last two things still make me think of fire or volcano. A fire is possible, I mean it took weeks before ash started falling here in Colorado from all the fires. Depending on the jet stream and Highs and Lows, it could have filtered the smoke straight at Boston, with more dispersion for the rest of the coast. Should have read further on, it was likely from a forest fire again from the above links: It would take several decades—and several more smoke-induced “dark days”—before the forest fire theory won wide acceptance. It was finally confirmed in 2007, after researchers from the University of Missouri discovered signs of a massive, centuries-old wildfire in the Algonquin Highlands of southern Ontario. “Fire scars” in the rings of the affected trees allowed the team to date the blaze to the spring of 1780.Last Edited by WhiteAngel on 10/03/2020 06:56 PM |
